Subject: Any Folk Events in Scotland May Day Hol From: GUEST,MC Fat (at work) Date: 22 Mar 10 - 06:53 AM Are there any events on or around May Day Bank Holiday in Scotland. My brother lives in Edinburgh but West Coast would be ok. |
Subject: RE: Any Folk Events in Scotland May Day Hol From: GUEST,kenny Date: 22 Mar 10 - 07:27 AM Girvan Festival ? |

Subject: RE: Any Folk Events in Scotland May Day Hol From: GUEST,Tattie Bogle Date: 23 Mar 10 - 09:04 PM Definitely worth thinking about Girvan! http://www.girvanfolkfestival.co.uk/ |
Subject: RE: Any Folk Events in Scotland May Day Hol From: Jack Campin Date: 24 Mar 10 - 05:56 AM MC Fat, what sort of events are you looking for? Concerts are pretty well publicized in Edinburgh, less so in Glasgow. I've never been to Girvan - from what I've heard there isn't much accommodation in the town and the campsite has often been a nightmare with flooding and gang violence. Maybe okay if you have a camper van. It's the only festival I've been dissuaded from ever going to by people who thought they were being enthusiastic about it. |
Subject: RE: Any Folk Events in Scotland May Day Hol From: Banjiman Date: 24 Mar 10 - 06:04 AM There's Bill Adair at Stirling Folk Club on Monday 3rd May. We'll be there helping him out! And Wendy Arrowsmith at Falkirk Folk Club on Thursday 29th April. (Bill Adair will probably be there helping Wendy out as well). There's a great Sunday night mixed session in Glasgow (where we'll be if the grandparents will babysit for another night!) at Uisge Beatha on Woodlands Road. 6pm 'til midnight. |
Subject: RE: Any Folk Events in Scotland May Day Hol From: GUEST,MC Fat (at work) Date: 24 Mar 10 - 06:14 AM Thanks for the advice about Girvan, I think that has nade my mind up not to go there cos I would need accomodation. My (sort of) plan is maybe to come up on Wed 28th to Edinburgh. My brother does a session at the Royal Oak on Thursdays. He's off to Italy on the Saturday. Might get Dumbarton's final match of the season at Clyde on the Saturday then head off to Glasgow for Saturday heading off back south on Tuesday.I've been to Uisge Beatha when I was last up and it was great so I would certainly go again. When are your sesh's Jack ? |
Subject: RE: Any Folk Events in Scotland May Day Hol From: Jack Campin Date: 24 Mar 10 - 06:27 AM Sessions are on my Twitter page. I won't be at Bells on the Sunday afternoon - on my way to Bosnia - but the rest of the usual crowd should be there. It's usually good on holiday weekends. Wednesday night there is a session at the Diggers (Athletic Arms) in Dalry/Armillan, which I haven't been to (too hard to get back home from) - it's associated with the Scots Music Group out there and they play their repertoire. Friday night at Bells can be lively (mostly Irish tunes, some Scottish and other), though I'm not there often. There may be some bluegrass session that Friday in Edinburgh or acoustic/Americana one in Midlothian, but I don't know yet. |
Subject: RE: Any Folk Events in Scotland May Day Hol From: GUEST,Tattie Bogle Date: 24 Mar 10 - 09:47 PM It is correct to say that Girvan is a comparatively small town, with a limited amount of hotel and B & B accommodation, and many folk re-book year on year: but I should not let Jack's damaging comments re the campsite put you off: there was one bad year, since when security has been radically improved, so that there should not be any repetition. Anyway if you decide not to go there, I would definitely try to see Bill Adair. |
Subject: RE: Any Folk Events in Scotland May Day Hol From: GUEST,MC Fat (at work) Date: 25 Mar 10 - 06:11 AM Just booked the train tickets. Coming up on Wed 28th to Edinburgh stopping with bruv till Saturday taking in Clyde v Dumbarton then possibility of Glasgow for Sat - Mon. (need to find some cheap B&B) Will deffo do Uisge Begh on Sunday. Train back from Edinburgh to Glasgow on Tuesday. Anything in Glasgow on Monday ? |
Subject: RE: Any Folk Events in Scotland May Day Hol From: Scabby Douglas Date: 25 Mar 10 - 06:31 AM There's a singaround session in the lounge of Laurieston Bar in Glasgow on Monday nights. 21-23 Bridge Street (just south of the Clyde) Link to Google Map Don't be dismayed by the fairly dismal locale. The bar staff are congenial, providing complimentary tea, biscuits and (last Monday) toasted cheese, and the session regulars are welcoming. Expect a wide range of genres and abilities. |
Subject: RE: Any Folk Events in Scotland May Day Hol From: Banjiman Date: 25 Mar 10 - 07:03 AM "Will deffo do Uisge Begh on Sunday." If the in-laws are in a co-operative mood (for babysitting) we'll see you there. |
Subject: RE: Any Folk Events in Scotland May Day Hol From: GUEST,MC Fat (at work) Date: 25 Mar 10 - 07:14 AM Just booked 3 nights at Euro Hostel in Clyde Street. All systems now go. Only debate is whether to bring guitar. If i am going tae the fitba (all beit at Clyde)i'll then have to lug it about on the Saturday. But it's looking goog for those sessions on the Sunday and Monday in Glasgow and some playing in Embra as well. |
Subject: RE: Any Folk Events in Scotland May Day Hol From: Jack Campin Date: 25 Mar 10 - 08:06 AM You don't need a guitar for Sandy Bells - they keep one in the basement, ask at the bar. Ditto a fiddle and a mandolin. I don't know any other bars in Edinburgh or Glasgow that keep house instruments like that. |
Subject: RE: Any Folk Events in Scotland May Day Hol From: GUEST,MC Fat (at work) Date: 22 Apr 10 - 06:21 AM I'm up from Wednesday next week |
Subject: RE: Any Folk Events in Scotland May Day Hol From: MC Fat Date: 24 Apr 10 - 06:19 AM refresh |
Subject: RE: Any Folk Events in Scotland May Day Hol From: GUEST,MC Fat (at work) Date: 27 Apr 10 - 06:34 AM Set off to-morrow. Vague plans are possibly in Edinburgh Sandy Bells Wednesday, Royal Oak Thursday. Glasgow Usige Beatha Sunday, Laurieston, Monday. Not bringing a guitar so will have to borrow one. |
Subject: RE: Any Folk Events in Scotland May Day Hol From: GUEST,JustMe Date: 27 Apr 10 - 08:37 AM This site www.ukfolkfestivals.co.uk which was mentioned just yesterday, lists four Scottish festivals starting around that time Highlands and Islands, Girvan, Strathspey and Shetland. I'd guess most clubs have something on as well. |
Subject: RE: Any Folk Events in Scotland May Day Hol From: Jack Campin Date: 28 Apr 10 - 06:53 AM There is a bluegrass session at the Reverie Bar in Newington (Edinburgh) 9pm on. I don't have enough time to do much more than drop in and say hello, but let me know if you'll be there. |
Subject: RE: Any Folk Events in Scotland May Day Hol From: weerover Date: 28 Apr 10 - 04:45 PM Girvan usually has some events worth going for. I haven't been for years but will be there this weekend, but am giving serious consideration to heading back home for a few hours on Saturday as my (football) team has a serious chance of making the promotion play-off places. wr |
Subject: RE: Any Folk Events in Scotland May Day Hol From: Tattie Bogle Date: 28 Apr 10 - 08:50 PM And my local rugby team Currie has a hot match with Ayr in Currie, but I'll be in Ayrshire at Girvan: if they win, I might get lynched! |
Subject: RE: Any Folk Events in Scotland May Day Hol From: GUEST,MC Fat Date: 29 Apr 10 - 06:38 AM Too tired to do Sandy Bells or much else last night. Will be at Royal Oak tonight at my brother sesh. |
Subject: RE: Any Folk Events in Scotland May Day Hol From: Jack Campin Date: 29 Apr 10 - 05:28 PM Tomorrow night the Greenmantle in Newington (near Scayles music shop) has a Shetland Spring Festival from 9pm on, with Shetland rum, bannocks and maybe "white wife" (a local Shetland beer named after a mythological figure from Yell). I think the landlady of the Greenmantle is from Shetland. The Greenmantle hosts a Shetland fiddle music session on Sunday afternoons, so maybe there'll be some Shetland music tomorrow night as well. The same evening, later, is the Edinburgh Beltane Fire celebration on Calton Hill, which goes on till dawn: Beltane Fire Society I'll probably be at the Greenmantle, I have to get up for work on Saturday so the Beltane Fire is out. |
Subject: RE: Any Folk Events in Scotland May Day Hol From: GUEST,MC Fat Date: 30 Apr 10 - 06:02 AM Had a great time at my bruvs sesh at Royal Oak. Greenmantle sounds good may go there. |
Subject: RE: Any Folk Events in Scotland May Day Hol From: Banjiman Date: 30 Apr 10 - 11:05 AM I'm leaving for Glasgow in a minute. Might well see you at Uisge Beatha on Sunday. I'll be frailing the old five string. Cheers Paul |
