Subject: Obit: Dave Bennett From: GUEST,Graham Bradshaw Date: 29 Mar 10 - 04:17 AM Just heard from Pete Grassby that Dr Dave collapsed and died at a Charity Gig last night at The Maudslay in Coventry. No further details yet, but he had played 20 minutes earlier accompanying Brenda as usual, apparently playing as brilliantly as ever. A stalwart of the Coventry folk scene for over 40 years, the old place will never be the same without him. Condolences and best wishes to Brenda and the family. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Dave Bennett From: mandotim Date: 29 Mar 10 - 07:27 AM I didn't say enough; Dave was a lovely, warm and funny man, always ready to make a stranger feel welcome. He was far too modest about his talents; as a fingerstyle guitarist he had few equals, and as an accompanist he would always try to make others sound as good as they could be. Too many of the good people gone already this year. Tim |

Subject: RE: Obit: Dave Bennett - 28 March 2010 From: GUEST,Pat Cooksey. Date: 30 Mar 10 - 07:14 AM Very sorry to hear this sad news, Dave and I go back to the seventies and the great folk music boom in Coventry at this time and we played many times together, both gigs and sessions, at one time we were playing together five times a week. I met up with Dave for a beer for the last time at Warwick folk festival two years ago and we had a good laugh remembering the old times. Dave was a great guitar player and also no slouch on the banjo, but most importantly a nice guy who was very generous with his talent, the folk scene in Coventry owes him a great debt. RIP Dave, Pat. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Dave Bennett - 28 March 2010 From: Cobie Date: 30 Mar 10 - 09:56 AM Very sorry to hear this sad news. Dave and I spent many great times together in the 70s during the time that I based myself in the Coventry Folk scene. He was a fine musician and an even finer human being who often rallied to the aid of Rod Felton and myself as we tried to the ballance demands on our time with running a variety of Folk/Blues clubs. I last saw Dave Christmas 1978, but he has always lived on in my head and always will. Love and kind thoughts to those he leaves behind. |

I cherish happy memories of busking with Dave and Mick Cullen in Stratford-on-Avon back in the 70s. As for the great music sessions in Coventry hosted by Dave, these made a huge impact on the local music scene and the confidence and ability of the musicians who took part. I was out of the country when I heard the news and wasn't able to include a tribute in my regular newspaper column as these were written in advance. Sarah and Stephen did their Dad proud, Sarah by playing and Stephen doing an absolutely amazing Eulogy. Then the crowd which came back to the General Wolfe (Dave's local) Singing the afternoon and early evening away. I'm sure Dave's spirit enjoyed every minute of it. It's knowing I'm surrounded by friends that has helped to get me through this. I will certainly see some of you in the summer at whichever festivals I manage to get too. Thankyou |
