I was given a 1989 cassette of The Phil Salazar Band, and heard Legend in His Time, for the first time in years. After losing my singer son at the age of 42, the song means more than ever.

One of my few regrets in this life is, I never got to meet Kate Wolf.

I see that I've mangled the first part of my previous post, sorry.
Yesterday I got in touch with Cyrus Clarke, and yes, indeed, he and David West wrote it for Kate Wolf. As I was searching for my post of yesterday, I found a Fans of Gram Parson's page, and noticed someone had answered question re who wrote .. Legend..10 years ago, so after all y research, there was my answer. Still learning how to use Mudcat; it's set up beautifully if I'd follow directions.

This song is about Gram Parsons. It includes references to Parson's songs, Hickory Wind, and Grievous Angels. That a bio on Parsons just was published, (Gram Parsons, a musical biography by Sid Griffith) Also, there must be more current interest in Parsons from people who read Keith Richard's memoir, "Life," since there is a lot in that about Parsons. I'm astonished there isn't anything I've been able to find on line. I just wrote to Cyrus Clarke, an old pal, if he wrote it, as was my understanding when a friend sang to me and I wrote down lyrics 30+ years ago. We lived in Santa Barbara where the New Cache Valley Drifters started 39 years ago at the Bluebird Cafe. Cyrus, David West, and Bill Griffith were founding members, and previously were back up band for Kate Wolf.
You can hear her now singing A Legend in his Time on YouTube.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GpEXIK3Mw8
Lyrics, as I wrote them down 3 decades ago are:

Some folks say this life ain't worth living
Some folks say that life is just a lie
Yo can take so muh from the man, who gave you all he'll can
When he's had enough, he'll just (?) up and die
Chorus: He was a legend in his time, I don't know the reason why
When He sang his songs You know I'd like to cry
Now he's on the other side, standin' on God's golden shore
Singing country music for the Lord.
The singing life was all he ever wanted
You know, the travelin' life can ake a man feel tired
Lay your fortune on the line, 26 ain't past your prime,
Now that angel band has one more for the choir.
3:Some folks say that this life ain't worth living,
but if you have a song to sing you'll last a while,
and we'll hear his songs again, comin' in on a hickory wind
Grievous angels right beside him one more time.

Wasn't there a brief appearance a few years back of one called "A Legend In His Own Mind?" (US Country Western?)

It might have been a parody.

Probably not related.

John

All I have is:

He was a legend in his time
I don't know the reason why
When he sang a song you know I'd like to cry
Now he's on the other side standing on God's golden shore
Singing country music for the Lord....
