Katy Cruel (2)

CHORUS:
All that I am, that I would be
Then I would be what I am not
But I am what I must be
What I would be, I can not
Oh little lallie day, oh the little lee oh day

When first I came to town
They called me the roving jewel
Now they've changed their tune:
They call me Katy Cruel

I know who I am
I know who's goin' with me
I know who I love
But the Lord knows if I'll marry

Oh little lallie day, oh the little lee oh day
(chorus)

When first I came to town
They brought me the bottles plenty
Now they've changed their tune:
They bring me the bottles empty

I'll dye my petticoats red
And face them with the yellow
Then I'll tell all the lads
My own heart I will follow

Oh little lallie day, oh the little lee oh day
(chorus)

It's down the road I go
And through the boggy mire
Straight way 'cross the town
And to my heart's desire

So hush, my pretty one
For you I'll ne'er be sorry
The heart of all my joy
Is the heart of all my worry

Oh little lallie day, oh the little lee oh day
(chorus)

------------------------------------------------ an interpretation of katy cruel which emphasizes her ostracism and offers an explanation for it...

An additional verse for "The Leaboy's Lassie":

Oh for Saturday nicht
Fan I'll see my dearie
He'll come whistlin' in
Fan I am tired and weary

The version in the database is the same one published in "The Scottish Folksinger" ed. Norman Buchan & Peter Hall (Collins 1973); the above is the final verse.

Malcolm Douglas

(Have I got the line breaks right this time?)

See Katy and her many relatives under the generic title "Ay Waukin O" in Scarce Songs 1 at www.erols.com/olsonw In "The Flash Lad" she is evidently a prostitute, and possibly also in "Katy Cruel".

More verses recorded under the title Katie Cruel on mp3.com by Anthea Lawrence, a singer and fiddler from the Pacific Northwest :

Eyes as bright as diamonds
Lips as red as cherries
And it's my delight
To see the young folk marry.

Someday I'll dress in silk
And shoes of Spanish leather
Combs to bind my hair
And a ring for every finger.

In Bruce O.'s scarce songs page the verse is:

Eyes as bright as coal,
Lips as red as cherry;
And 'tis her delight
To make the young folks merry.

Bill and Gene Bonyun used to sing the chorus this way:

Oh, that I were where I would be,
Then I would be where I am not,
But I am where I must be,
Where I would be, I can not,
Oh, little lallie day, oh the little lee oh day.

Everyone else must have got it wrong! ;~)

Cheerily,
Charley Noble
