this is a song recorded on Paescod's Fible Fable, by a guest singer.
It begins
The squire and the baker and the landlord of the inn
Caught him with their daughters three
A crime they cried a sin!

They dragged him to the crossroads
And strung him up on high
On the topmost branch of the gallows tree and left him there to die.

TBH I know most of the words to the other verses, but think that I am missing a verse out when I try to sing it.
It has 3 verses, then the 'chorus'

A fine night my noble lord
Enchante ma madame
Pray let me introduce myself
I am the Devil's highwayman!
Spare your ring of silver
Likewise your ring of gold
And I might even spare your life
If you sell to me your soul!

The problem is, I only know one more verse then a final chorus (slightly different) where I know that the recording has two of the above choruses before the finishing one... aargh?
Anybody know it?

When I first saw "Paescod's Fible Fable" I figured there had to be 2 or 3 typos in there—but no, there is (or was) indeed a band called Paescod [sic] – although it's hard to find information about them. They apparently don't have a web site and they're not listed at Allmusic.com. I suspect the band is defunct. They made at least 2 albums: "Fible Fable" (1997) and "Fool in a Box" (1999).

However, the track lists I've found say that THE DEVIL'S HIGHWAYMAN is on "Fool in a Box," not "Fible Fable."

That's about all I can say.

(grins)
thanks Jim. I've solved my own prob this morning- the CD finally decided to work, and yes, my mistake it is from Fool in a Box. And I had missed just one verse!
The band are now defunct, and IIRC many of their songs were either self wrotten or very adapted.

Comprising Judith, Phil and Mike with friends and guests they kept us happy in the beer tent at Tewkesbury Medieval Festival for several years running, until they were superseded by Schelmisch, and more recently The Roving Crows (among others but these are the two I best remember!).
