Does anyone remember a folk singer from the 1960's called, June Bugg?
I have one LP and it may be the only record she ever made.
I cannot seem to find anything about her and if she did record any other records? What became of her? She had a really nice voice and of course an unusual name. Don't know if that was her real name or not but that is the name on the folk album from around the mid-60's.

I do I do I do!!!!! I have wondered about her for years as it was through her that I first heard all the usual folk songs: All My Trials, Blow The Candle Out, etc.

I must have been about 4 or 5 years old when my Mom brought that LP home and I wore the thing out listening to it.

I have mentioned her in another thread http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=75122#1834698 and no one seems to know what ever happened to her.

Glad to hear from someone who knew of June Bugg. Do you still have the album? I have mine somewhere.....not sure where as I have some records in boxes in a storage unit. You'd think with a name like June Bugg, you would have heard something more about her but I could never find any information. Did your mother bring home a lot of folk records when you were little? Many obscure ones like June Bugg?

She sounded so like Joan Baez I always wondered if someone hadn't just ripped off some Baez tracks and repackaged them with a made up name.

Pretty odd in this day of the inet for a performer to have left absolutely no trail beyond the album itself. And then, the initials are the same.

I posted a thread a few years ago asking about June Bugg, an Ameican folk singer who had one LP out in the 60's. Read through all the other posted messages after I posted my message, so just thought I would bring it up again as it has been a few years now. Still interested to find out if anyone at this time has heard anything else

There is currently a young artist named Jake Bugg whose parents were musicians. Although the name of the mother isn't mentioned, that could be his mother. Just a thought.

It would be nice to have some biographical information
for the many performers who appeared during the folk scare.

I've found nothing about June Bugg, other than a mention in
BILLBOARD Nov 16, 1963 indicating she had signed an exclusive
contract with GEORGE ALPERT, president of MOUNT VERNON MUSIC.

The Guitarist on her album, and it's various incarnations,
is "Howard David." There is a Howard David who is listed as
co author with Ronny Lee of "Mofr Folk Strums for Guitar" published
by SAM FOX Publishing. It included a   7" instructional disc.
Anyone know if it is the same person? Still around?? perhaps he would have information about June Bugg.....

The album was released on the PALACE label, which was
a subsiiary of Buckingham Records address given as 500 Fifth Avenue.,
which may indicate it was part of RECORD HUNTER Store and/or Remington/Continental Records.

George Alpert was also associated with BUCKINGHAM.

As far as I can tell, there is just the one LP by June Bugg, and no other recordings that have been published. I don't get the confusion with Nina Simone, having the folk music tracks credited to her.
This woman couldn't have just vanished into the ether, she probably recorded under a alias.
Somebody out there needs to tell the story.

The VERNON JFK Tribute contains 3 titles credited to Bugg which are
NOT on her album.

The one who appeared in the folk festival is June Bug (one "g" in last name and is a very young woman who appears to be in her 20's. Not the same person. June Bugg the American folk singer would probably be in her 70's now.

Wow! Surprised to see the posts here about a singer that I didn't think too many people have heard of. I have the LP of June Bugg too. Nice album, very good singer! Somebody must know of her whereabouts - the album is from the 1960's as other guests have mentioned.

I too looked up the June Bug in folk festival in Paris in 2014. That is definitely not June Bugg. The singer in Paris has only one "g" in her name and way too young to be the June Bugg that guests on this thread are looking for. June Bugg (wonder if that was even her real name?) is American and LP came out in the 1960s' My guess too is that June Bugg would be in her 70's.

Hi,

Palace 771 is titled: Nina Simone Sings Porgy - With The Village Allstars. (Apparently, that's to be read as "Simone with the Allstars on the same record", not as "Simone with the Allstars on the same song".)

Billboard 11 Sep 1965 has a bit about the drive against 'Misrepresenters', where they mention Nina Simone, June Bugg and Porgy. However, they are writing about "Sings Porgy" and "Second Album" as if there's only one album. Hence, I'm not sure the claims that Simone doesn't sing Porgy and that it's Bugg singing are indeed supposed to be taken together.

Apart from 2 versions of "The incredible voice", Freegal lists her for the albums "Girls with Guitars", "Acoustic Folk Generation Songs" and "Folk Music Masters". I don't think they give access to the covers for more information, though. Still, for someone with the right library card, this might be a way to listen to the songs.

Other than that, Deb mentions having heard her in earlier days, but she already said as much above, some time ago.

I'm still trying to find out if June Bugg (American folk singer from the 1960's) is still around (and apparently no relation to British folk singer Jake Bugg)
There just does not seem to be much information out there as to what ever happened to her and if she ever had more then the one LP (solo)
that was released in the 1960's. I do have the one LP with a close up of her face on the cover.

If anyone has any information as to what happened to her or what area of USA she lived, would be appreciated.

I don't even know if June Bugg was her real name or not.

The Howard David lead is interesting -
In addition to the MORE FOLK STRUMS FOR GUITAR mentioned above,
he edited WORLD CLASSICS FOR THE GUITAR (1965, 1968) Herk Favilla
Publications (I guess this is associated with FAVILLA guitars, now
inactive).
As JUAN De GRECOS he wrote THE FLAMENCO GUITAR (Sam Fox, 1973).
I've also heard from one of his students that he was associated
with GATO NEGRO instrument string manufacturer, and moved to Spain
in 1965.
Anyone with knowledge or connections to any of these companies
might be able to locate Howard David if he is still around.
Anyone have any ideas on how to pursue these paths ????

One of the leads I've been researching has just come to a dead end -
At the time George Alpert signed June Bugg, he also signed Phil Lucas. I hoped Lucas might be located, and have information about
June Bugg - alas, we will never know.

On movie and television screens, where Native Americans were often portrayed as primitive warriors or passive sidekicks, Phil Lucas stood tall.

While the Issaquah filmmaker was one of the first American Indians to find national acclaim behind the camera, he wasn't interested in just shattering stereotypes. He showed Native people as they really were — their struggles and successes in a country that is still coming to grips with its history.

Mr. Lucas died Sunday (Feb. 4) after developing complications from heart surgery. At the age of 65, he had written, directed or produced more than 100 films, TV series and documentaries — and touched thousands of lives.

Lucas taught film at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, N.M., and the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, Canada. For the past eight years, he was a film instructor at Bellevue Community College (BCC), where he founded an American Indian Film Festival in 2003, providing a welcome forum for Indian filmmakers.

His students are working around the country. "He was the kind of guy who you wanted to run back to and tell about your success," said Travis Sterner, who runs a film-production company in Bellevue.

Mr. Lucas won an Emmy in 1994 for co-directing "The Native Americans" on TBS, did several projects for PBS and was honored at several film festivals.

One of his most memorable films was "The Honour of All," which tells how the Alkali Lake band of Indians in British Columbia overcame decades of alcohol abuse. Their village was 100 percent alcoholic in the 1960s but was almost entirely sober 20 years later, said Gary Robinson, Lucas' production partner and close friend.

The film "was the most powerful thing you'd ever want to see," Robinson said.

Mr. Lucas was born in Phoenix, and as a young Choctaw he saw signs posted in rural towns reading, "No dogs or Indians allowed." Such early prejudice helped inspire his film career, Robinson said.

"He worked toward racial equality in any way he could." He received a visual-communications degree from Western Washington University and traveled the world before settling in Issaquah. He was a musician in New York, an advertising agent in Honduras and a freelance photographer in Nicaragua, where he lived through the 1972 earthquake that devastated the capital city of Managua.

He's "probably lived his life more than any 90-year-old," said his son, Jessy Lucas, of Issaquah.

With boundless energy, Mr. Lucas juggled his film projects, teaching, family and an active role in the Issaquah chapter of the Baha'i faith. He "was fierce as a father and protector," and helped a long line of friends with advice, shelter and guidance, Robinson said.

Other survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Lucas; sons Josh of Tacoma and Jason of Seattle; and daughters Amra Lucas of Seattle and Sara Lucas of Issaquah. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the BCC Carlson Theatre, 3000 Landerholm Circle S.E., Bellevue.

I just read through your post about June Bugg recordings.
I do have the one LP of June Bugg but didn't know about the other two LP'S that she appears on.


I tried to enlarge the picture of the LP, "In the Summer of this year,
Tribute to John F. Kennedy to see the songs she sings but even though I could enlarge the image a bit on my Tablet, it was still too blurry to read what the songs are. So if you are able to read the songs on your device, could you please post again as to what songs she sings on this album?

Also, do you know what songs she sings on the "Dominque, A lyrical
Masterpiece in French & English" LP?
Are the songs that she sings in French or English?

I just stumbled upon this thread today. It looks like several of you have been searching for June Bug for quite a few years. I can take some of the mystery out of this. June Bug was an alias. She was married to George Alpert, who owned all of the labels she recorded for, such as Palace and MVM. George was a fascinating guy. I recorded several albums for him back in the sixties and learned a lot about the record business just by being around him. He was a master of creative, if not always honest, packaging. That confusing substitution of June and Nina Simone is one example. Another is June recording a multi-tracked cover album as the “ choir of nuns” in order to capitalize on a big hit of the day called Dominique. June was no more a nun than I was. With the exception of Folk Art records, which I cut two albums for, every one of these companies that George owned were what used to be called “budget LP” companies. The albums sold for $0.99 so nobody was real picky about them if they weren't quite what you expected. It was all sort of a game to George and he had lots of fun doing it. I'm sure June (I don't remember her real name) had fun playing along with him, as did I.

Yes, that would be correct if her first name were actually June. But there is no guarantee of that. The entire name “ June Bugg” was probably an alias. I probably met her in the office one day but I honestly have no recollection of what her real first name was.

Junebugs or June bugs are a prolific and well-known beetle found in the southern and south-eastern United States. Chances are if she was using "bug" as the last name that "June" wasn't real either.

The only thing I can tell you about the Alpert’s marriage is that they had a Bedlington Terrier named Misty. George occasionally wrote liner notes for albums & signed them “ Misty Bedlington.” I remember the first time he did that, he couldn't wait to tell me the next time I came into the office. I believe they lived in Mount Vernon, New York, in Westchester County. I know that's where his office was. In fact if it matters I could probably dig out the street address and telephone number, even after all these years.
         If you're serious about looking up records of their marriage, I can tell you that I met George in 1963 and he seemed “old” to me. That probably meant he was in his forties :-) So maybe they got married 10 years before that. You can do the math.

Wow. Thank you, Hank. She was the FIRST folk singer I heard and she made quite an impression. I might have been 4 or 5 at the time and I suspect that the 99 cents price was what convinced my Mom to purchase this album. Eventually, I learned every song on that album and this was before I started playing guitar. I always wondered what happened to her. When anyone asks me who was my first inspiration for folk singing I always tell them June Bugg.

That's absolutely lovely, Deb. I'm sure that “June,” if she's still among us, would get a big kick out of hearing that. George, too, would enjoy knowing that his creative merchandising actually had an impact on impressionable listeners at the time.
I think that some of George's exploits would make fascinating reading today and a glimpse into an era of the record business that existed 60 years ago. I'd be happy to write up such an article if I had any idea of where to publish it.

"B" is correct for the Cash Box George but probably not for the references to the Apollo Records accountant linked to him. Fun times huh?

To Phil: “My” George is not the guy in the 1970 Cashbox photo. That was easy.   
    I also noticed looking into this a little further, that when George packaged some of June's tracks with the two by Nina Simone, he nicknamed June “Sassy.” June had no such nickname. That was simply a marketing ploy to get you to confuse her with Sarah Vaughan, whose nickname was indeed Sassy. it was just one more subliminal cue to lure in the unsuspecting buyer.
        I also noticed that there was overlap between tracks on the original folk album issued under June's name and the Nina Simone album. George’s thinking, and he was entirely correct, is that there was unlikely to be overlap between those two markets.

The Stanley Alpine mystery is solved. My father was George Alpert and his the Palace and Buckingham labels were his. They were budget albums. Stanley Alpein was a childhood nickname and my dad used it as kind of a joke. We can all rest now...

Re: Howard David - Wrote a few things under the pseudonym "Dale Howard." No recordings under that name so far. No idea which real world individual he might be.

Discogs has the credits associated with both Ronny Lee and June Bugg combined under one artist which doesn't mean much.

Rather than solving the Stanley Alpine thing, it seems to have gotten a bit more complicated. On one hand we have the idea that Sonny Osborne used that as one of his aliases. On the other hand George's son, if he is indeed that, claims that the name was a childhood in-joke that George used when he was compiling one of his country music albums. Here is a third possibility. I have a copy of Billboard from November 16th 1963. On page 16 there is an article about George and the formation of Mount Vernon music. The article lists some of the personnel who will be involved. It includes Steve Alpine, who will be head of A&R (artists and repertoire). Is he real? Is he any relation to Stanley? Is he another imaginary concoction of George's?

To answer Thomas Stern's question: I was part of a folk Trio with two black ministers named Tony Campbell and Calvin Morris. George named us the Blues Brothers (before the Ackroyd /Belushi thing, although I don't think he ever released any albums using that name. We cut our albums in Boston under George's supervision. The first was released on Folk Art 502 in 1964. It was called God made the Blues - Volume 1. George flew up to Boston again later that year and we cut a follow-up album, although I'm not sure he issued it at the time. He also issued a 45 by us that was used to promote the lp.

About a year later I cut an instrumental LP for him using a studio in Mount Vernon. I'm not sure if he issued this album. I think it would have been on one of his budget labels if he did. It was called Scotty Parker and his Nashville Men Play the Music of Hank Davis. I don't know if it was ever issued by George or whether he might have sold it to another label. Knowing George, it is unlikely that he invested in a project and didn't get some kind of return for it. I also gave George a lot of old demo tapes I had cut around New York in the late 50s and early 60s which he might have used as filler on some of his other projects, no doubt changing my name in the process.

And I don't know Howard David even though we have the same initials.

Now it can be revealed. June Bug was my mother. Her real name was Helen Alpert. I will post more in the next days or so and dispelll all the mystery. I did not know there was a mystery but I guess there is...more to come...

Are we talking about the same June Bugg? You have one "g" in the last name. I have the LP, but it says June Bugg, with two g's.
The album came out in the early or mid -60's I believe.
I don't have it in front of me. She was around 20 years old or so at the time. I have always loved that album and over the years was trying to find out more about June and her music and what ever happened to her? If alive, in her late 70's now?

Regarding June Bugg whose album I also have, there is still no authentic documentation of her existence as either June Bugg or as another person using that alias. How come June Bugg has not come forth to identify herself in any way? She was quite pretty and had a very nice voice, both in the manner of a young Joan Baez.In fact she looks like Joan Baez did.Did she have children or grandchildren?
   I would wish that Ms. Bugg or some relative come forth now. Also, why are comments "turned off" on the June Bugg Hootenanny album available on-line(You Tube), under the "topic" June Bugg?

Yes, I was a fan of June Bugg too and still wonder what ever happened to her. Also I wonder if that was her real name or not.
But if not her name, why would a really good singer not want to use her real name? I mean,to me,it wouldn't make sense.

If you are trying to get known or at least some success with your album, play out in folk clubs why would someone not want to use their real name? Of course, it is possible that June Bugg is her real name, but would you name your kid June if Bugg was your last name?
Yes, you would think someone in her family or knew her back in the 60's at folk clubs or where ever
