Yes, we're hoping to build his UK tour around Whitby!

Can I please refer Catters to Max's tour thread. I've been listing the possibilities for some time now & will be getting in touch with everyone who has already offered hosting pretty soon, this'll be very much like herding cats!!

Anyone with ideas & offers, please PM me so I can figure out a decent itinery for Max!

Subject: RE: To Max: For you from Mudcatters
From: Soldier boy
Date: 10 May 10 - 08:32 PM

Like others above I would strongly recommend that Max comes over to the UK for the full week of the 'Whitby Folk Week' festival from Sat 21 to Fri 27 August 2010.
It's a busy time in the UK folk calendar so I feel certain that there will be other events occuring before and after Whitby that could link up well.

Whitby is a beautiful old seaside resort on the Yorkshire coast which attracts many mudcatters to it's festival and has a very strong "fringe" element in the local pubs and clubs with many musician sessions and singarounds where anything goes. So it is bound to be a hit with Max.

If I know that Max will definately be coming to Whitby Folk Week I could start a thread to announce this to ensure we get the max amount of mudcatters to come to meet up with Max in Whitby at a mudcatter gathering and at various locations/sessions in the town throughout the week.

It would be more than a real pleasure for me and many UK Mudcatters to meet Max because I feel that so many of us owe Max so much. So many of our festivals and events are broadcast on Mudcat and so many meet-ups and gatherings of old friends occur year after year thanks to Mudcat. In fact it is difficult now to imagine how we could do without it. So me and tons of other folkies in the UK owe him big time and will show him much appreciation and a very warm welcome indeed!

Whitby Folk Week is a stunning festival where you are spoilt for choice of what to do and where to go during the week and is my personal favourite out of all the festivals in the UK.

I will also PM you with details of a friend and fellow Mudcatter who lives in Whitby and who is a brilliant organiser and has more Mudcatter contacts than me.

Very best regards.

Chris

Hi, Max -
I'm sure you'll love Whitby. My favorite experiences were the children's concerts (hearing Janet Russell and Cyril Tawney do kids' songs was a trip to heaven), and especially the afternoon concerts in a pub in Robin Hood's Bay (about 5 miles south of Whitby). The town and the pub are about as picturesque as you could dream of. My only regret is that I didn't walk along the bluffs to Robin Hood's Bay at least once - I always took the bus.
Oh, and I also took the bus to Scarborough, which was a wonderful trip. Riding the bus is a fun way to get around the area.

What's the problem with buses? You don't have to drive, which means you can drink if you want to. It's quite a nice route and it doesn't take too long. You can stare at the scenery.

It's nice to walk there (either along the old railway line or along the cliffs) and bus back to save time in what can be a very busy week. Check the programme to see who's booked to do a 'half a day at the Bay' on each particular day. You don't need a ticket.

Hmmm, logistics eh?

It's great that Max has teamed up with Dick Greenhaus and Susan on their travels to the UK and will be sharing a cottage with them in Whitby during Whitby Folk Week (Sat 21-fri 27 August '10.) So it really is confirmed that Max will be coming to join us all in Whitby at some point at that time and that his accomodation is all sorted.

When we know his itinery we will learn how long he will be in Whitby for and I hope it will be for more than just two or three days because I know that we good friendly Yorkshire folk could easily treat him like a King and kidnap him for the full week.

Long live the King!

Chris

P.S : Has anyone got some mug shots of Max or video of Max playing some Country Blues so we can all recognise him immediately and spot him on tour in the UK?
And could he possibly extend his tour beyond two weeks to include the 'Wareham Wail' and stay for three weeks?
The man deserves it!

It would be fabulous if Max has enough time to do Whitby and Wareham aswell! As soon as we know how long he is able to come over for we can start really planning his itinery.

We will need to bear in mind that there are a lot of Catters who don't go to Whitby or Wareham who have actually contributed to Max's fund and or have offered hosting.

We've been hoping for a trip to Ireland while he was over, but if people keep kidnapping him, that might not be possible. If he can only come over for 2 weeks he will be spread very thinly indeed!

Max - If you don't get to Wareham there is a spledid weekend festival in Fleetwood (Fylde Folk Festival) that same weekend - Opposite coast to Whitby so you can do the coast to coast trip as well:-) Dick and Susan had a bit of a bad experience with inclement weather and my son's leaky tent but don't let that put you off. It has been know to be good weather there sometimes! I cannot offer anything by way of acomodation and I am just a touch too far anyway but I am sure there are plenty catters in the area who would assist or advise.

Cheers

Shrewsbury Folk Festival falls between Whitby and Wareham/Fylde date wise and would be do-able on-route to either. I don't know anything about it though apart from there are some good names on!

Dunno if that is any help!

BTW - Fylde is always on the same weekend they switch on Blackpool Hallucinations. Always worth seeing even if just to remind yourself to never go to Blackpool for a week :-D

No problem, Soldier Boy/Chris. He's been the "Kid" to a lot of us who used to get to see him on live video broadcasts of "Mudcat Radio," way back when...:-)

Just a thought...maybe actual festivals won't be as important as how many Mudcatters he can actually get to see? Depending on how long he'll be there and how many Mudcatters do or do not make it to any fests. (I have in mind the Great Mudcat Adventure that Bill Sables and AllanC did, years ago. Of course that was over here and they came waaaay out West, so drove from Mudcatter home to Mudcatter home...sometimes vast distances.:-)

Good to see you here Max!!

Good point Kat, I'm not certain that festivals are a priority (we UK'ers do seem to set our calendar by them), though it's obvious that Whitby is a Must as there'll be loads of Catters about. Making the best use of Max's time will be all-important closely followed by meeting as many Catters as possible.

Also, much as I love the Wail, and will be there again this year, I feel obliged to point out that it is a song and ale, for unaccompanied singing in an intimate setting, and Max, as an instrumentalist and singer, will perhaps find Fylde (the same weekend) more congenial and an opportunity to meet more Catters! Though the Wallingford Bunkfest will be that weekend too...

Thanks Kitty, the other point about the Wail is that people needs to camp really, there's not much in the way of B&B and being 'on-site' is much better. Which would mean loaning tents & sleping stuff etc.

I'm still hoping we'll be able to pass Max from Catter to Catter with Gathers inbetween, there have been so many offers!!

Roger, many thanks for the Blues info, I was just going to ask if anyone knew about that. Not sure if Max will be bringing an instrument, but I'm sure that wherever he goes he'll be handed one to use!!!

It's 141.300403 kilometres or about 2 hours 19 minutes by car(according to various Internet sites). But if you're travelling from Grimsby by public transport you can get the train to Doncaster, change for York and then you've got various options for Whitby (Coastliner bus direct to Whitby or train to Scarborough then bus to Whitby). All this takes 4/5 hours. This site will help plan journeys in the UK by public transport journey planner

Perhaps some kind Grimsby mudcatter will see this and offer lifts. See you in Whitby!

If you are Doug Chadwick lives in Grimsby.

You have a point, "puzzled." Mudcat would be a more interesting place for visitors if thread originators would take the time to ensure that the first post explains the topic of discussion.

Max is Max Spiegel, the owner of Mudcat. He's somewhere in his mid-30s now, but was much younger when he started this thing in 1996. Gee, he may well be approaching the age of 40, but I think he still has all his teeth and most of his hair.

Max has a weekly radio program on wpsu in State College, Pennsylvania. We really have no idea where State College is, but we believe it has a university and that it is located someplace in the middle of nowhere - which is where everything in Pennsylvania is located.

Oh, and Max plays a mean guitar and sings pretty well, too. You can see him on his YouTube channel.

I am certainly looking forward to meeting up with Max during Whitby Folk Week and will keep on looking out for his itinery and where us Mudcatters can gather together to join him.

Whitby Folk Week is a very good choice Max. I'm sure you won't regret it and we will all make you very welcome indeed.

Sorry guys, been up to my ass in alligators. Gotta get my priorities straight right? Anyway, I'm in for about 10 days and am letting the wind take me (that is, any catter that wants me).

Thanks again, to everyone. Still hard to believe this is really happening.

Hmmm, 10 days eh? You will be spread VERY thinly Max, going to have to get you away from Whitby or we won't get many Gathers sorted!!

Possibly flying into Manchester & having the first weekend of Whitby, followed by Gathers & hosting along a route via Midlands, South Wales, London and/or Kent.   Actually, London might be better midweek as quite a few Catters will be heading for Towersey at the weekend. Flying out of Heathrow would save time.

Looks like Towersey, Shrewsbury, Wallingford, Fylde & Wareham are out!

OK then Catters, can anyone organise Gathers (& hosting & lifts) in these areas within the time frame? PM's to ME please, suggestions welcomed!!

MGAS - Whitby during the week will be better too because of the weekend coinciding with the regatta. Quite a few Catters will probably not arrive until the regatta has finished.

Ah, you're saying that Max shouldn't go to Whitby for the first weekend?? I haven't been to Whitby week myself but I heard that most Catters would be there the first weekend, is that not so?

The main thing Max wants is to meet Catters, festivals are a bonus!

MGAS - under normal circumstances many catters would be at Whitby on the first weekend.

However, when folk week and the regatta co-incide then many (myself included)avoid what can only descibed as akin to a rugby scrum. The town is overflowing - accommodation is at a premium and if the weather is hot, venues are unbearably full.

Thanks for the info Kitty, JHW & nutty! Not sure that we can avoid that first Whitby weekend even though it coincides with the Regatta *sigh*

We were already thinking about choosing Max's outward flight to coincide with Dick & Susan's trip to Whitby which would make sense in that they could all travel together and they'll be sharing the cottage too. If we don't extract Max from Whitby till the Tuesday then maybe a Gather could be arranged for the Monday?

It would be great to get Max along to Scotland (and Ireland too) but with such a limited visit due to Max's vacation dates I can't really see how we can fit it all in. Unless we miss out all the Southern Catters perhaps?

If the regatta still do the firework display it is worth seeing - Anyone know if they do? 198? last time I was there and it co-incided!
I can only imagine the crowds now though - It was not too bad in those days but still very busy.

We were also lucky enough to be at Whitby when the Moor and Coast do co-incided with the early Goth weekend - It was fantastic! Dunno who were the strangest:-) Funnily enough I am just back from a weekend at Whitby as well. Still one of my favourite places in the world - even without the folk music.

Guys - we are coming over on Aug 13 to Edinburgh, see our going to Whitby thread. Max is unlikely to come over at that time. We considered two plans for this trip and decided on the early/Scots plan to Auchtermuchty.

ZEN - We'll be in Scotland, with time between Auchtermuchty and Whitby. Will we do?

I guess you're both primarily singers? If so, probably some good sessions in both Edinburgh and Glasgow if you're in transit via either.

A million zillion thanks to all involved, and especially SINSULL, jacqui_c, Susan of DT, dick greenhaus and (extra special thanks to) My Guru always said for putting up with me through this process, I can be a bit hard to get a hold of sometimes (single-parenthood you know).

Got ma and pa to watch the kids and Penn State has agreed not to fire me while I'm gone.

My guru always said is officially in charge of my itinerary, so communicate with her if you'd like to participate in this traveling circus. We'll post details as they are firmed.

I am very excited to finally meet many of you, and find no coincidence to the timing of this trip at this time of my life.

THANK YOU ALL.
