There have been many versions of Eddie Dean's "Hillbilly Heaven"; Tex Ritter and Roy Rogers, among others, have recorded it. My challenge to you, should you choose to accept it, is for someone to come up with a version for folk music. Some of those included would be, in no particular order, The Carter Family, Leadbelly, Cisco Houston, Woody, Burl Ives, Phil Ochs, Tom Clancy, Lou Gottlieb, Lee Hays, Earl Robinson, Ewan MacColl, et cetera, et cetera.

If no one accepts this challenge, this thread will archive in 24 hours.

John

Femme fatale: Oh, no! I can't pay the rent!

Oily moustache twirler aka Snidely Whiplash: You must pay the rent! I hold the deed to your pitiful little cabin! If you can't pay, you will lay.....across the railroad tracks! Tied down! Ahahaha! THEN, we'll see how much that blasted Mountie cares about you!

Okay, okay, I'll stop! I like your idea John, just don't feel too qualified. Maybe the muse will strike later! Thanks for the ummm...dialogue**BG**

A short meller-drammer made up by Kathy Westra down here in DC:

SCENE: A practice studio/music room in a poor young woman's house. Towering over the cowering, sweet young thing (SYT), who grasps a fiddle, is the villain, an oily, mustachioed Music Teacher (MT).

MT: The time has come, my dear, to play "The Rant," or submit to my base desires!

SYT: But I can't play "The Rant!"

MT: You must play "The Rant!"

SYT: I can't play "The Rant!"

MT: You must play "The Rant!"

SYT: I can't play "The Rant!"

MT: You must play "The Rant!"

ENTER, Stage Right, our Hero.

Hero: I'LL play "The Rant."

MT: Curses, foiled again!

Scene ends with Hero playing "Morpeth Rant" as the evil MT slinks from the room.

Playing it is one thing, Dancing it is quite another. Never could get that rant step just right.

'minds me of the story told right after J. Garcia's passing (ok, not only thread creep, but wrong genre). Jerry came to and found himself clad in the brightest white he'd ever seen (for him that must have been somehting!) He's is a place filled with only the white light which reflects all around. He looks around and sees Elvis, Janis, Buddy Holly; all the greats. Just as he says to himself, "Wow, I made it!" in walks Karen Carpenter and sits down at the drum kit and commands, "All right guys, get it right this time! From the top, "Close to Me."

Is this a great website or what!? Where else can you throw out an idea while spoofing another medium, get it amplified and punned on, and even get some terrific additional ideas. What a great forum!

I never could make up my mind whether i wanted to be up There with the Carter Family (if anyone is there, they are) asking AP if he wants somebody to sit in for him while he walks around, or Down Below with Charlie Poole and Gid Tanner and Robt. Johnson. Hillbilly Heaven (isn't that the original title?) included some people that i would be surprised to see there.
