Subject: RE: Staithes Music Event 2010. From: Tim Leaning Date: 16 May 10 - 07:59 AM Its amazing what you remember as you get older |
Subject: RE: Staithes Music Event 2010. From: Doug Chadwick Date: 16 May 10 - 03:39 PM Still not sure it if I will be there yet, Tim. If I do get there it will only be until Saturday morning. Same price for one person for one night as for 4 people for 5 nights? Don't seem quite fair somehow. How far is the new camp site from the Captain Cook Inn? DC |
Subject: RE: Staithes Music Event 2010. From: Arthur_itus Date: 16 May 10 - 03:49 PM Quote Same price for one person for one night as for 4 people for 5 nights? Don't seem quite fair somehow. End of quote Absolutely Doug. Not fair or right. Give Doug a one night price Tim. He does a lot of good for the folk world. |
Subject: RE: Staithes Music Event 2010. From: Doug Chadwick Date: 16 May 10 - 05:06 PM Give Doug a one night price Tim. I don't think it's Tim's fault (in fact, I know it isn't). He's just the messenger. DC |
Subject: RE: Staithes Music Event 2010. From: Arthur_itus Date: 16 May 10 - 05:09 PM Oh sorry, I thought he was the promoter. Ah well, maybe the messenger should negotiate for you Doug. Keep at him :-) |
Subject: RE: Staithes Music Event 2010. From: Tim Leaning Date: 17 May 10 - 04:23 AM I have asked as to the whereabouts of the camp site Doug and am waiting the info . As to the pricing I hadn't looked at it that way 'cos It didn't occur. I don't think there is a promoter as such. That would imply that there was someone who was looking to make some cash from the event. There are organizers and the main one for contact purposes is Tony Leonard. His contact details are in the first post. I suppose the pub must stand to make some money from it so maybe inquiries about the pricing should go to Neil. His contact details are also in the first post . I hope you do make it for at least some of the time Doug, it was excellent to have your company and music last time around. I think your contribution was greatly appreciated by all... |
Subject: RE: Staithes Music Event 2010. From: GUEST,Neil Date: 17 May 10 - 06:11 AM The new camp site is being provided as a one off specially for the festival, it is a 5 minute walk from The Captain Cook Inn. There will only be 30 pitches. The £25.00 being charged is being donated to the local school so no profit for anyone there. The Captain Cook Inn is owned by Trevor who is 76 years old and still works 112 hours a week (that's 16 hours a day, 7 days a week). Trevors pub as been running at a loss for two and a half years now but as a labour of love he keeps it open by ploughing his pension into it. Beer at £2 a pint (and under) means Trevor will never be rich as his pub would need 200 customers in it all the time at those prices. The Captain Cook would just about squeeze 100 people in at any one time. Tony Leonard spends all his spare time organising this event and does not make a penny out of it, again it is a labour of love. As for me, I just love good old fashioned British pubs where people can gather and enjoy each others company over a pint and have a sing song so I work 21 hours a week behind the bar at no charge to help keep the pub open. Events like the Staithes Acoustic Music Festival are what some people live for but are time consuming and costly to organise so anyone who would like to donate time or funds to help those less fotunate to do so would be appreciated. Maybe a committee could be formed to help organise next years event and help take the burden off of Tony and Trevor. |
Subject: RE: Staithes Music Event 2010. From: Tim Leaning Date: 17 May 10 - 08:04 AM Cheers Neil. The weekend at Staithes is in my opinion one of the friendliest and most welcoming that I have attended. Any music is welcomed equally and performers of any level. Nobody is paid to play. It is informal cheap and great fun. Like most things you take from it according to what you bring. Look forward to seeing a few of you there. |
Subject: RE: Staithes Music Event 2010. From: Arthur_itus Date: 17 May 10 - 08:07 AM Sad state of affairs there Neil. A committee would sound a good idea. If it was set up properly, you may be able to get a grant for the weekend. Maybe there should be an entrance fee for each event, say £2 which would go to the pub. |
Subject: RE: Staithes Music Event 2010. From: Tim Leaning Date: 17 May 10 - 08:46 AM The post code for the pub is TS13 5AD and the camp sites post code is TS13 5AU. Thank you Neil. |
Subject: RE: Staithes Music Event 2010. From: GUEST,Neil Date: 17 May 10 - 12:52 PM Thanks Mr Itus I'll look into the possibilities of getting a grant but unfortunately we can't charge entry as we are a public house. Thanks for the ideas and keep them coming. |
Subject: RE: Staithes Music Event 2010. From: Arthur_itus Date: 17 May 10 - 01:06 PM http://www2.biglotteryfund.org.uk/small_grants_schemes_0910.pdf Have a look here Neil. You could go for the short form grant, for a maximum of £10000, which takes about 10 weeks to be approved, but you need a committee with bank account etc officially set up. You are very rural and you can argue the case for a community music weekend, where you could buy in some qualty performers as well (just a thought). Good Luck Arthur |
Subject: RE: Staithes Music Event 2010. From: Tim Leaning Date: 17 May 10 - 05:13 PM Cheers mr itus. You should come along. You may be surprised at the quality of artist who pal just for the joy of it and to support their local community. |

Subject: RE: Staithes Music Event 2010. From: Arthur_itus Date: 18 May 10 - 08:01 AM Tim says Cheers mr itus. You should come along. Now Tim, why do you think my name is Arthur itus? Steep hills are a no go. At least that's what denise says. |
Subject: RE: Staithes Music Event 2010. From: Tim Leaning Date: 18 May 10 - 10:07 AM The Captain Cook is at the Top of the hill on a fairly flat bit if that's any help Arthur |

Subject: RE: Staithes Music Event 2010. From: GUEST,muppett Date: 20 May 10 - 04:13 AM Looking forward to the event |
Subject: RE: Staithes Music Event 2010. From: GUEST,Ticketseller Date: 20 May 10 - 05:19 AM This sounds a fabulous event and deserves support. We had an impromptu weekend there in March with some bluegrass musicians and were made very welcome by Trevor and the locals. Best of luck - and it sounds VERY good value to me. |
Subject: RE: Staithes Music Event 2010. From: Tim Leaning Date: 20 May 10 - 05:26 AM Trevor seems to support a lot of music events over there in Staithes. They do a Sunday every month at which anyone is welcomed to play sing recite etc and I believe He also enjoys his jazz as well as blue grass. Incidentally some blue grass would go down very well at the staithes weekend if you were around mate. Looking forward to meeting you Muppett. |
Subject: RE: Staithes Music Event 2010. From: GUEST,Seonaidh Date: 20 May 10 - 06:13 AM I have to agree with Ticketseller - the pub is excellent and deserves support. Trevor is a wonderful bloke! We stayed up playing music til 4am, and he brought us loads of fresh orange and a fine cooked breakfst at 11.30 the next morning! I'll try to get over for at least one day over the weekend, but busy round then. For the people complaining about the cost of camping, there's plenty of other sites in the area. And if it's only for one night, you can always just stay up playing and sleep when you go home... |
Subject: RE: Staithes Music Event 2010. From: GUEST,Neil Date: 20 May 10 - 09:45 AM Just incase Jonny Law is keeping tabs on this thread I must point out that The Captain Cook Inn does have a 24 hour residence licence and that Seonaidh was booked in for B&B and so entitled to stay up playing music and supping till 4am!! Wonderful music as well by all accounts. |
Subject: RE: Staithes Music Event 2010. From: Tim Leaning Date: 20 May 10 - 10:13 AM Lol legal niceties and music eh? There is an upright piano in the bar just in case anyone was interested. |
Subject: RE: Staithes Music Event 2010. From: GUEST, Jim Hancock Date: 20 May 10 - 02:54 PM I'd like to add the event to our festival listings at http://www.yorkshire-folk-arts.com/directory/festivals.html Could the organisers drop me a line, a visit to the above page will show the sort of information we need, or click on the entry form on the page. All the best Jim Hancock |
Subject: RE: Staithes Music Event 2010. From: Carol Date: 20 May 10 - 03:31 PM Looking forward to 5 days and nights of fun!! No stars thank you - I always think of Staithes as a DIY weekend and wish there were more held like this. Although I consider myself to be a 'folkie' I enjoy the mix of music and song over the 5 night weekend. Another one is on the last weekend of June, any profit in aid of the British Heart Foundation at Chorley, called Sing Your Heart Out, another one at Copull and I could continue but if anyone wants more info please PM me |
Subject: RE: Staithes Music Event 2010. From: Carol Date: 20 May 10 - 03:35 PM By the way I've 'mobility problems' but the Captain Cook is at the top of the Hill and I believe the campsite is on the same level |
Subject: RE: Staithes Music Event 2010. From: Arthur_itus Date: 20 May 10 - 03:35 PM So what you are saying Carol, is that its not an audience 5 days, but mainly for people who want to sing or play. That counts me out definately. |
Subject: RE: Staithes Music Event 2010. From: Tim Leaning Date: 20 May 10 - 04:26 PM Hmmm I rather enjoy being the audience but also take a turn now and then. Its not a concert venue but there will be some great playing and singing. |
Subject: RE: Staithes Music Event 2010. From: Arthur_itus Date: 20 May 10 - 04:31 PM Hmmmm Think I would rather go to a Festival with proffessional acts on like http://www.southwellfolkfestival.org.uk/ |
