Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: Murray MacLeod Date: 23 May 10 - 07:25 AM Sean Bean on cittern, for sure, plus, unless I miss my mark, Alexei Sayle on drums. speaking of tattoos, one of England's premier folk guitarists has an amazing and very artistic tattoo on his chest (right-hand pec), but never shows it during performance AFAIK. |
Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: greg stephens Date: 23 May 10 - 07:49 AM Ve haf vays of making you Celtic. |

He used to show it quite a lot. |
Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: GUEST,Neil D Date: 23 May 10 - 12:41 PM Folk Metal has gotten extremely popular, especially in Northern Europe. Note that this video by Swiss band Eluveitie has over 5 million views. |
Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: GUEST,surreysinger sans cookie Date: 23 May 10 - 12:44 PM In Extremo were actually the result of the fusion of heavy metal band and a mediaeval band ... heaven knows whose idea it was, but they have been extremely successful in their own home territory. Seems to work! |
Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: Little Hawk Date: 23 May 10 - 12:54 PM Hey, barbarian hordes need music too! ;-) Very effective stage show, I must say, and the audience clearly loves it. |
Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: GUEST,Russ Date: 23 May 10 - 01:20 PM What a hoot. Folk Rock is apparently back. Was it every really gone? Russ (Permanent GUEST) |
Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: katlaughing Date: 23 May 10 - 05:01 PM Love the hurdy-gurdy, too! I wish they'd focus on the tats a bit longer to get a good look at them. Will Fly, when will we see you up there?*bg* |
Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: Little Hawk Date: 23 May 10 - 05:15 PM I can really see Big Mick doing this kind of an act. It would be awesome, as they say these days. |
Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: Will Fly Date: 24 May 10 - 03:20 AM Will Fly, when will we see you up there?*bg* Lordy! Well, the beard would probably fit in OK, but there's a definite further forward projection of the stomach muscles advance of the pecs... Don't think I'd go half-nekkid on stage without a see-through corset. :-) |
Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: Liz the Squeak Date: 24 May 10 - 04:25 AM Damien Barber has a positively splendid set of tats... a joy to behold and should be flayed from his body and framed when he pops off. And what the hell, if you've got it, flaunt it! LTS |
Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: Tattie Bogle Date: 24 May 10 - 05:15 AM Tats?? More bare pecs and tattoes at 0.51 secs here! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9ZmjK_xJFU |
Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: Mr Red Date: 24 May 10 - 10:01 AM In my youth the culture was that tattoos were a bit infra-dig. Like men (and women) sporting pierced ears. On a scale of things that are important. They look as if they can play their instruments. That is all we can ask. If it is Folk for the modern idiom let the modern idiot listen. But as Martin Carthy says (fawn, fawn) "You can do anything to folk, absolutely anything at all, and it will survive. Except when you ignore it." And who are we to contradict the deity? |
Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: Tattie Bogle Date: 24 May 10 - 10:25 AM Well as a young medical student in the 60s, our VD specialist (yes, that's what they were called in those days) told us very categorically to suspect any tattoed women as they were very likely "professional ladies of the night" and likely to be carrying a few nasties. Judgmental or what? |
Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 24 May 10 - 10:37 AM I listened to the video for a full 20 seconds. While the visual may seem modern, the music (and the audience clapping) were 100% traditional. Granted, the chick-chick-chick sound came from a trap set rather than from a shaky egg, but as a sound it is nothing new. No doubt they will do something more 'modern' later - if you can call present-day rock, which doesn't seem to have done anything new since Jimi Hendrix, modern. |
Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: Banjiman Date: 24 May 10 - 10:40 AM I love it. I doubt we could get them to play Kirkby Fleetham Folk Club though! |
Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: Will Fly Date: 24 May 10 - 11:27 AM if you can call present-day rock, which doesn't seem to have done anything new since Jimi Hendrix, modern... Interesting comment... nothing more modern than Jimi Hendrix in the last 40 years, eh? Oh well, chacun a son gout, as they say. |
Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: Alan Day Date: 24 May 10 - 11:40 AM One of the UKs top guitarists is always threatening to show me his tattoo, but sadly he has only room for Will or was it Fly ? Al (even smaller) |
Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: Alan Day Date: 24 May 10 - 11:45 AM PS We are just good friends !! Al |
Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: meself Date: 24 May 10 - 12:26 PM The 'future of folk' may well include these guys, but white-haired, wearing shirts to cover their much larger bellies, and probably sitting down to play. |
Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: open mike Date: 24 May 10 - 01:56 PM 2 of those videos had tattoos at 51 seconds... do you suppose they planned it that way? |
Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: Alan Day Date: 24 May 10 - 02:07 PM Future ? Have a look at Will and I on Utube (Mr Tenor Guitar) Must start slimming. Al |
Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: TheSnail Date: 24 May 10 - 02:36 PM If Will is worried about whether his manly torso is fit for audience exposure, he should take a look at the harper. In this version, he keeps his clotes on but I'm not sure about the little woolly hat. |
Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: Will Fly Date: 24 May 10 - 02:39 PM All depends where the little woolly hat goes when his clothes are off... |
Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: theleveller Date: 24 May 10 - 03:40 PM Fantastic - but scary in an Edgar Alan Poe sort of way. |
Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: Crow Sister (off with the fairies) Date: 24 May 10 - 03:53 PM Sorry I can't join in the joy - even in a cheesy kitch bad mullet way. It's just awful! Get yee back to thee eighties thou eveyil folkies! |
Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: Desert Dancer Date: 24 May 10 - 04:33 PM Well at least they don't call it "folk"! The question of the hour is instead, "What is medieval metal?" ~ Becky in Long Beach |
Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: Alan Day Date: 24 May 10 - 05:47 PM Pewter ? Al |
Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: oggie Date: 24 May 10 - 06:06 PM So if they can pull a crowd like that playing bagpipes what is the folk world doing wrong? Personally I love it but then I also have a soft spot for Skyclad and Schandmaul and many others. Prog folk is alive and well. Interestingly oggie junior (who hasn't been to a folk festival or session for many years, he had a couple of bad experiences and opted out) is off to a metal festival in Slovakia this summer where about half the bands are prog-folk. Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: bubblyrat Date: 24 May 10 - 06:49 PM I have some tattoos, including one by Professor Rex Zeta, late of Union Street, Plymouth (1964),but it hasn't affected my playing. One of my Commanding Officers (Captain J C Y Roxburgh RN )had at least one quite large tattoo ,which did him no harm at all. Likewise HRH The Prince Philip ( you must have heard of the Edinburgh Tattoo ?). I have NEVER earned any money from folk music, hence my bare chest. |
Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: Gibb Sahib Date: 24 May 10 - 07:47 PM Pfft, and here *I* was being afraid I'd be accused of being an exhibitionist for mixing things up a little...!!! |
Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: Will Fly Date: 25 May 10 - 04:02 AM I have NEVER earned any money from folk music, hence my bare chest. LOL - good one! I trust the tattoo is the fox hunt... |
Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: GUEST,Shimrod Date: 25 May 10 - 04:34 AM I doubt whether bare chests and tatoos are the 'future' of folk. They just happen to be fashionable in this particular micro-second. |
Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: GUEST Date: 25 May 10 - 05:35 AM I'm surprised no-one's mentioned Corvus Corax yet. Now there's a band you wouldn't want to get the wrong side of.. |
Subject: RE: Future of folk - bare chests & tattooes From: bubblyrat Date: 25 May 10 - 05:42 AM No,cousin Will, not that one, although you can see it in all its glory (almost !) on the body of a sailor if you look at " Youtube--HMS Eagle at stand-easy"----narrated by Ludovic Kennedy, and well worth watching !! Actually,I always fancied having the two "Devils", one on each "cheek" shovelling coal up a fiery, flaming fundamental orifice ( it's a magnificent sight,if properly executed), but I chickened out. Anyway, if you do ( or anyone else does) watch "HMS Eagle at standeasy" or "HMS Eagle -replenishment at sea",you'll see enough Bare Chests AND Tattoos to last a lifetime --I know, because I was there ( for 3 years) ---and a lot of the crew were "folkies" !! |
