Last year I heard a Dave Van Ronk rendition of a Brecht song, on the radio, didn't get the album title, or any other useful information. He did an amazing job with it. Does anyone have information on this recording?

to the Tom Waits and Paul Simon tunes covered on his latest album To All My Friends in Far-Flung Places, through ragtime guitar arrangements of Jelly Roll Morton and his own insightful and often hilarious songwriting, the preeminent performer didn't forego a short stint performing rock, and on-again-off-again affairs with jug band music and the cabaret theater tradition of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill. He has done it all with aplomb.

That is the name of the album, To All My friends in Far-flung Places.

But, I just did a search at CD Now and that is not his latest album. Apparently "Going Back To Brooklyn" is. Here's a link to the page which lists his albums available with some audio samples. Maybe you will recognise one of those as the one you're looking for: DVR@CDNow

Sorry Kat, wasn't sure, given the grammar, if that described what was on the specific album, or whether it described Dave's broad ranging careerrrr. Somehow I thought he'd done an entire album (or a group of artists had) solely of Brecht songs. If it hasn't been done, it would be a terriffic idea, wouldn't it?

"Let No One Deceive You: Songs of Bertolt Brecht" was recorded in Vancouver back in 198? and originally issued on on LP by Aural Tradition Records (the non-profit label then run by the Vancouver Folk Music Festival). It was later reissued on Flying Fish. Half the songs are performed by Dave Van Ronk, half by Frankie Armstrong, and they do one (Tango Ballad) as a duet.

"Going Back to Brooklyn" was also released on LP in the '80s (my CD copy is dated 1991). There have been quite a few albums since then.

I think it has a discography. I have an old LP of his that contains "Song of the Wandering Angus". I'll have to go home and look it up, but it's probably out of print.

Is there a Frankie Armstrong page/link that anyone out there knows? I'm still trying to find the words to Lament for Hull Trawlers that she wrote and I figure I can sneakily find out this way.- Lorraine
