Hello,
I thought I'd start a thread about bands that you liked but have vanished from the scene.
What happened to Crucible? I saw them at my local Folk club and at Bromyard, great four part harmonies, tunes with a rough edge to them. Wasn't quite sure about the girl with the pipes but overall it was a great sound. Have they stopped performing? Their website has no dates on it.

Bob

Maybe I didn't make myself clear... I meant bands that have gone quiet and there has been no announcement of why.

In 1972 Mr Fox disbanded after less than 2 years together, and just before Bob and Carole Pegg split up. Great band and superb songs by Bob Pegg who, I believe, is now a professional storyteller.

Well that just shows how different people like different things, because for me it's Helena's pipes that made/make all the difference in lifting Crucible's sound out of the ordinary. There isn't enough woodwind (and unusual instrumentation generally) in the current English folk scene IMNSHO, but that's maybe a subject for another thread ...

Ah, so they're not disbanded.

Actually, her piping is good. It was the singing and patter that grated with me. As you say, there is a lack of unusual instruments on the scene. I just said pipes as it distinguised her from the other girl in the band.

Brown Gilroy's Giro - resident band at South Tyne Folk and Blues c1969/1970.
What happend to them?
Well last I heard Matty Scott was living in the wilds of Northumberland near Wooler, Alan Rutter was still in Southampton and singing around the clubs there. Terry Kelly lives near Newark and has become a bluesman of no small talent; I am down here in Nottingham and you are in South Durham.
Maybe if one of these proposed STF&B re-unions ever come off we might meet again.

The Iron Horse as a band retired in 2001 but apparently continue to be at the forefront of the traditional music scene in other projects.

Anyone know what happened to The Island Girls - a group from Canada. I saw them at Warwick Folk Festival a few years ago but can't find any info on them now.

I had one cut on a compilation CD by the Blue Rubies ("When You Were Mine"). I could find no trace of them even with an internet search.

My favorite defunct band was Out of the Rain, a San Francisco Bay Area band who recorded traditional and original songs in three-part harmony. All of the members are still around, although farther flung than they used to be.

Crucible have been having a bit of a break from heavy duties whilst Jess and Rich had their gorgeous baby Lucy. We did a couple fo great gigs recently at the Royal at Dungworth and Raunds Festival.

We're putting together some Autumn tour dates at the moment and should be back to doing a lot more regular stuff in 2011 (booking now). I've been working on a solo album, and there are some other spin off projects afoot. We promise to revamp the website!

Still, it is nice to know someone misses you enough to care :)

Mr Jordan does indeed post on here (as Ralphie) ...and I'm sure you can ask him about what he's been doing since then if you want to. In his current absence though, I would say though that, as Eric was a trio, they were not actually "centred round Nigel Chippendale (sic) and Ralph Jordan" ... I sadly never got the chance to see them in live action, but it's my understanding that Colin Thompson was very much an integral part of the band and the overall threesome.

PS It's actually Nigel Chippindale ... "i" not "e" :-)

They have been brewing their own beer for maybe 20 years now. Had a few pints the other weekend - Bengal Tiger and Old Dark Attic - excellent.
