On one of Ry Cooder's early albums (Into the Purple Valley), he sings the song "FDR in Trinidad". The opening lines are;

When Roosevelt Came to the Land of the Hummingbird shouts of welcome were heard....

Anyone know any more???

Roosevelt In Trinidad (Fitz McLean) Recorded 2/16/37 by Atilla (Raymond Quevado) [from booklet in Rounder CD 1142, Roosevelt in Trinidad, released 1999]

When Roosevelt came to the land of the Hummingbird,
Shouts of welcome were heard,
When Roosevelt came to the Land of the Hummingbird,
Shouts of welcome were heard,
His visit is to the island is bound to be,
An epoch in local history,
Definately marking a new era,
Between Trinidad and America.

There are three additional verses. The CD should be readily available at your nearest independent record (er, I mean music/CD) store, or even thru the internet. There are 25 cuts of "events, places, and personalities 1933-39". For those of us who remember them, paeans to the Four Mills Bros. and to Bing Crosby are also interesting.

Have fun with this, CarlZen.---John

PS: Somewhere I do have the Ry Cooder version; trust me, this is better.

These last 3 verses are from memory:

For this great man jubilation,
Was evinced by th'entire population.
Friendship for the US they were shown,
And from his house the Stars and the Stripes were flown.
For the state threw open the gate,
To the President of these United States.
In fact everybody was glad,
To welcome Roosevelt to Trinidad.

Wer are priviliged to meet the democratic
President of this grat republic.
With his charm and congenial personality,
And his wonderful urbanity.
We were touched by his modest style,
and weren't tricked by the famous Roosevelt smile.
No wonder everybody was glad,
To welcome Roosevelt to Trinidad.

Now we understand that the President has just been
On a visit to Brazil and the Argentine
Mr Cordell Hull in attendance
where they took part in a peace conference.
To stop war and atrocity,
and make the world safe for Democracy.
The greatest event in the century,
In the interests of suffering humanity.

(or words to that effect!)

B.

The Rounder announcement of the CD John Hindsill posted above is here, saying, "Several of the songs heard here were revived in the '70s by such artists as Ry Cooder, Van Dyke Parks and others." I'm now listening to this CD. Timely. I got it with some other caribbean recordings last week.
