Subject: RE: The Seven Stars Sessions - Kent U.K From: Girl Friday Date: 27 Jun 13 - 09:26 AM The Seven Stars is closing for refurbishment soon. Our last Folk Session there will be on Monday July 8th. It will be a celebration rather than a wake. We have been there now for 3 years. If anyone wants to come to our last night they are welcome. We hope to be moving to the nearby Foots Cray Social Club. |

Subject: RE: The Seven Stars Sessions - Kent U.K From: Singer of Songs Date: 27 Aug 10 - 07:49 PM I fondly remember Duck Races along the canal boats we had. It was good fun and I will enjoy the day. The best Duck won. The Ducks were aged from 5 to 105 and no one cared. We all enjoyed what they did on the canal that day. Age does not matter anymore I think. |

Subject: RE: The Seven Stars Sessions - Kent U.K From: Girl Friday Date: 23 Aug 10 - 08:14 AM He's made of wood, and can float. Raffles would have it that he belongs to the master race, so he must be a superior stick. I put it to you that he is non- political, and just wants to enjoy a good folk night. |

Subject: RE: The Seven Stars Sessions - Kent U.K From: Girl Friday Date: 23 Aug 10 - 07:25 AM Mr Sticky wishes to point out that his Uncle Joe would not approve of him being referred to as a fascist. He is naturally a little upset. |
Subject: RE: The Seven Stars Sessions - Kent U.K From: Rob Naylor Date: 22 Aug 10 - 08:50 PM I can confirm that it's a great environment for "improvers". I've got a *lot* of improvement to do (the ability to get all the way through even one song without a major cock-up, for instance) but have felt included and encouraged at all times. |
Subject: RE: The Seven Stars Sessions - Kent U.K From: Rafflesbear Date: 22 Aug 10 - 07:06 PM STM, I hope you don't mind, I have been doing my homework !! We would absolutely LOVE to have a whistle or harp at our session and if you just want to fit either into someone else's tune then that's what we're all about. I believe we have a great environment for 'improvers' you would get total encouragement Really hope to see you on the 30th Rafflesbear |

Subject: RE: The Seven Stars Sessions - Kent U.K From: Rafflesbear Date: 22 Aug 10 - 06:16 PM STM The sessions are quite informal. We sit round and take turns at leading the tunes or songs, each person according to their ability, but unless requested by the performer we assume that everyone can join in if they wish, each person adding to the overall effect. The age range is sadly weighted to the over 50s but we do have and welcome younger people, we also have a stated policy of encouraging and supporting people starting out. There are no guest artists, no 'stage' raised or flat, you play from where you sit, no PA There is a wide variety of music, a capella, guitars, dulcimer, mandolin, banjo, steel guitar, bodhran, and anything else you care to bring along - except that we are acoustic and ask for our music to be 'compatible with a folk audience'. Because we have a wide variety of people we get a wide variety of styles. I believe that because of where we are situated we get a happy mixture of the Kentish and London influences We meet and play in a bar open to the public and have no issues whatsoever with the locals, many of whom have come up to us and told us how much they enjoy the music. The pub is a large one but does not have wide open spaces, it is historic (16th century in places) and the garden (mainly paved) runs down to the River Cray which can be heard from the upper part of the garden. It is easily accessible by bus from many parts of South-East London / North West Kent and has a large car park attached Our biggest asset is in the warm, friendly and talented people we have been fortunate enough to attract. Please come along and find out for yourself if this is the session for you, you will get a warm welcome - bring a friend if you want. We are equally pleased to see people who simply want to listen. For more details you can check out our website www.craysidefolk.co.uk Hope to see you there Rafflesbear |
Subject: RE: The Seven Stars Sessions - Kent U.K From: Rob Naylor Date: 22 Aug 10 - 06:01 PM It's a singaround. Not floorspots. Until last week we just took turns round the circle, declining if you didn't feel like it. But now have "Mr Sticky" who I understand is a former member of the Waffen SS who's been hiding under Girl Friday's bed for several decades. He hasn't changed his spots though, and controls who has the turn with all the efficiency of his fascistic background :-) It's anything goes, too (within limits....which I think we reached briefly last week). Songs, accompanied or not, or tunes, or whatever. Folky and more contemporary. There's been *a* young singer present at both the sessions I've attended and I'm sure everyone would be more than happy to see more younger people there. The barmaid's young, too :-) |
Subject: RE: The Seven Stars Sessions - Kent U.K From: S.T.M. Date: 22 Aug 10 - 05:19 PM Hello, I am thinking about coming to this session next week on the 30th. I was wondering if someone could tell me what it's like there? Is it floorspots or a singaround? Or more of a session? Do you play any tunes, sing songs or a mixture? Are there many younger people there? Would you welcome younger people? Thanks! :) |

Subject: RE: The Seven Stars Sessions - Kent U.K From: Rob Naylor Date: 21 Aug 10 - 03:17 PM RB: nice one Rob! Makes me ashamed for never having heard of them :-) Ah, well, I guess there's not as much genre crossover as I thought! Though I believe that Darius Rucker is now mainly into country music. You'll be telling me next you've never hear of Mark Goffeney of The Big Toe Band: Mark Goffeney of The Big Toe Band |
Subject: RE: The Seven Stars Sessions - Kent U.K From: Girl Friday Date: 21 Aug 10 - 01:28 PM The poundshop used to sell bags of little yellow ducks for bathtime use. We could sell them individually, number them, and see whose gets furthest downstream. The winner would get a ducking |
Subject: RE: The Seven Stars Sessions - Kent U.K From: Rafflesbear Date: 21 Aug 10 - 05:23 AM Idea for using the Cray on Folk Day We 'sell' people official 6" x 6" sheets of paper and give them access to origami boat instructions. They then make a boat & put their number on it in marker pen. Before the start we could have a Concours d'Elegance Then at the word of command they all drop their boats into the Cray on the far side of the bridge in the High Street. (we could have an ambulance standing by for those who get mown down coming back across the high street) In the pub garden we stretch a string over the river as a finish line and one of us enters the river to catch the boats as they pass under it. The winner gets a luxury holiday for two in the Bahamas (or whatever we can run to) |
Subject: RE: The Seven Stars Sessions - Kent U.K From: Rafflesbear Date: 21 Aug 10 - 03:42 AM For anyone who didn't get Rob's reference first time (like me) and couldn't be bothered to google it, here is the wikipedia entry Hootie & the Blowfish is an American rock band that enjoyed widespread popularity in the second half of the 1990s. They were originally formed in 1986 at the University of South Carolina by Darius Rucker, Dean Felber, Jim Sonefeld, and Mark Bryan. The band has recorded seven studio albums to date, and has charted sixteen singles on various Billboard singles charts. Their 1994 debut album, Cracked Rear View, is currently the 15th best-selling album of all time, going platinum nineteen times. nice one Rob! Makes me ashamed for never having heard of them :-) |

Subject: RE: The Seven Stars Sessions - Kent U.K From: Rafflesbear Date: 20 Aug 10 - 02:22 PM tuner fishing is subject to quotas, we should be careful not to exceed these |
Subject: RE: The Seven Stars Sessions - Kent U.K From: Girl Friday Date: 20 Aug 10 - 12:53 PM Oh, yes, I said that the two seats by the river should be used on the day. I suggest that fishing should feature in it. Fishing for keys Fishing for Capos Tuner Fishing Fishing for banjos (no- just leave them in) |
Subject: RE: The Seven Stars Sessions - Kent U.K From: Rafflesbear Date: 20 Aug 10 - 11:42 AM Actually we had planned a keyboard through a letter box competition :-) When I was young and living in Lee we had never heard of Pooh sticks so we called it Quaggy boat racing, which makes me think it's lucky we hold our sessions next to the Cray because Quaggyside Folk Club is a bit of a mouthful One way or another though the River Cray should feature in the event - any ideas? |
Subject: RE: The Seven Stars Sessions - Kent U.K From: GUEST,Pierre at work Date: 20 Aug 10 - 08:57 AM On the folk day I was going to play Pooh sticks on the bridge out side over the river useing Keyboards? |
Subject: RE: The Seven Stars Sessions - Kent U.K From: Girl Friday Date: 20 Aug 10 - 06:43 AM Pierre - your table vaulting could be made into a choreographed display and feature at the Folk Day in place of the Morris Dancing ! It's not easy finding some tame Morris Men, but we are working on it. See you later Sue |
Subject: RE: The Seven Stars Sessions - Kent U.K From: GUEST,Pierre at work Date: 20 Aug 10 - 06:13 AM Hi Folks I am glad it hasbeen solved peacefully but honestly Sue It shouldnt matter if I drank beer from a bucket you do not drink some one elses pint and then buy them half back. I did have my Tankard with me but I had left it on the table whereby I would have had to keep chriss crossing back and forth and climbing over tables to get get to it so I went to the bar and brought a pint left it outside to go to the heads and this guy was drinking it with his own half finished pint sitting next to him. anyway looking forward to Monday and Bread pud. Regards Pierre. |

Subject: RE: The Seven Stars Sessions - Kent U.K From: GUEST,Woodeneye Date: 18 Aug 10 - 11:33 AM I'm glad I wasn't there. I know who you are talking about though! |
Subject: RE: The Seven Stars Sessions - Kent U.K From: Rob Naylor Date: 18 Aug 10 - 09:06 AM Yeah, I could see you were squashed into that corner, and wasn't surprised when you bailed out to the terrace. Same player caused my guitar to slide and nearly hit the floor (again...I'd already knocked it over once myself :-( ) and then nearly shoved my pint off the table and into the sound hole with his "rearrangement" of the table and seating. Again I said nowt, but it was really thoughtless. Could have had a ruined guitar quite easily. |
Subject: RE: The Seven Stars Sessions - Kent U.K From: Girl Friday Date: 18 Aug 10 - 09:04 AM I am delighted to report that the situation re keyboards has been resolved peacably. Ian will be the only keyboarder next Monday, and on all future Mondays, and he is totally low key. How about bringing your tankard along to identify your pint? |
