Subject: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: Tug the Cox Date: 24 Jun 10 - 08:18 PM For several years Tuesday night at the Middle Bar in Sidmouth has been a Sidmouth Lifeboat benefit night. For the last three years the Exmouth Shantymen have started at the middle bar,led a breakout run ashore to other venues, raising loads of cash, and returning for the final spasm. The crew won't be there as a whole this year, so in consultation with the organiser, Mike Gibson ( Cllr) I'm trying to organise a Motley crew to do about 3/4 spots around the town to add to the coffers. Who's up for it.? Tues...meet at Middle bar for 8.00, hit a few spots ( Rosies, sailing club, ship, swan, and back to Middle bar.) |

Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: Tug the Cox Date: 26 Jun 10 - 11:01 AM Thought just blue jeans and white shirt/tee shirt. Unless anyone wants to make some teeshirts bearing the legend 'I've sucked a Fisherman's Friend'. |
Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: VirginiaTam Date: 26 Jun 10 - 12:22 PM a design like this? image inverted for iron on to tshirt |
Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: VirginiaTam Date: 26 Jun 10 - 12:23 PM If we are not stewarding and the walk from pub to pub is not too strenuous, we might possibly join in. Design above is free for anyone wants to use it. |
Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: GUEST,noreen Date: 26 Jun 10 - 12:42 PM hmmm. . . I would only wear such if the 'I've sucked a ' wording was rather less conspicuous, ie only visible at close quarters. But nice design otherwise, Tam- if Lofthouses don't mind. See what happens when people take you seriously, Jeff! |
Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: VirginiaTam Date: 26 Jun 10 - 12:52 PM If I don't sell the design or the tshirts with the design, Lofthouses shouldn't mind at all. No one profits from their brand. And it makes free advertisement for them. That is why I made the inverted design. So people could nip down to Staples and by the printable iron on paper for transferring designs to fabric. I rather like the bold letters. But then I don't mind in ur face kind of statements on tshirts. Pure entertainment for me. Thanks for the compliment. |
Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: Tug the Cox Date: 26 Jun 10 - 02:09 PM Wonderful...Virginia....I was only 'aving a larf', but I think they'd go down a storm in Shantydom. Maybe wear them underneath white shirts and expose them at the end?? |

Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: Tug the Cox Date: 27 Jun 10 - 12:55 PM Well, Terry. Thereby hangs a tale, the Sidmouth Lifeboat isn't RNLI, who think one isn't necessary there. Sidmouth, being independent minded manage to finance their own lifeboat without central support. I understand there's not much love lost betwen the Sidmouth Crew and local RNLI crew. |
Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: vectis Date: 27 Jun 10 - 07:26 PM The Sidders lifeboat is in the same position as the Cromer lifeboat then. Count me in if you are not over Nancied. The Mary bit of Magwitch |

Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: GUEST,Lady Policeman Date: 29 Jun 10 - 03:25 PM Although Sidmouth has it's own private lifeboat, I'm told the crew are trained by the RNLI. Sidmouth residents raise money for both RNLI and their own lifeboat. Personally if I am drowning off Sidmouth I don't really care which one rescues me! Kath |
Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: Tug the Cox Date: 29 Jun 10 - 07:58 PM Too right, Kath, that's why we'll be raising money...most people don't even know the Independent/ RNLI thing. Anyway, all welcome...there'll be lots of people still in the Middle bar, Mike G ( cllr) is hatching some wicked plans to publicise the 'home and away' crews...all for the benefit of the fund! |
Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: Tattie Bogle Date: 29 Jun 10 - 08:11 PM They have been known to come out to us during the "Silly Songs in the Sea" - those of us who are silly enough to try to swim round the 8-knot buoy - singing all the way there and back. Thankfully we made it back unaided but nice to know how vigilant they are. |

Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: Tug the Cox Date: 06 Jul 10 - 08:46 AM If people would like to give some thought as to which songs they would be prepared to lead, I'll get some sort of list together. |
Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: GUEST Date: 06 Jul 10 - 11:25 AM How many songs will we need for a quick sing, collect and away? My favourite shanties are John Kanaka, One More Day and Bulgine Run. GRex |
Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: VirginiaTam Date: 06 Jul 10 - 01:04 PM Doon't know if any or all of these are "shanties." I sing Odetta style versions of Run Come See Jerusalem and Heave Away Santyanno. I wail a fair version of General Taylor, growl Johnson Girls and moan Shallow Brown. Sing Grey Funnel Line too. I kind of know Four Old Whores of Baltimore and could be persuaded to learn it proper to do the verses if everyone joins in on the chorus. Will there be a short rehearsal prior to the actual sing? My suggestions for the list: Chicken on a Raft Blow Boys, Blow or Congo River Drop of Nelson's Blood or Roll the Chariot Along Haul Away Joe Lowlands Rolling Home Rolling Down to Old Maui Mingulay Boat Song Shenandoah The Focs'le Song or Sailor's Farewell Hymn or Tis Our Sailing Time. Someone has to sing Whup Jamboree. |
Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: Tug the Cox Date: 06 Jul 10 - 01:17 PM Probably about 3 or 4 songs per stop.Could have a rehearsal in the afternoon, but the likelihood of everyone being available twice in a day is pretty small. Most people wil know choruses...just leads need to be confident. Looking good, I'll try to make sure everyone who want's to lead gets a chance.....will negotiate with cllr about what we do at Middle bar before and after run ashore. make yourself known GRex, either tthen or before. Heave to, me hearties. |
Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: GRex Date: 06 Jul 10 - 03:18 PM How many songs will we need for a quick sing and collect? How many volunteers do we have? My favourite shanties are John Kanaka, One More Day and Bulgine Run. GRex |

Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: GUEST,Steve O'D Date: 06 Jul 10 - 06:30 PM If I am not stewarding I don't think I can resist middle bar beano. |
Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: Tattie Bogle Date: 07 Jul 10 - 08:50 AM Not sure about leading, or even when I shall arive, but can we have "Leave her Johnny" and "Rosey-Anna" on the list? |
Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: Tug the Cox Date: 08 Jul 10 - 07:48 PM A few good suggestions and offers coming in, mostly on PM, but please help by making offers. Cheers, Jeff |
Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: VirginiaTam Date: 18 Jul 10 - 05:15 AM Just had email from our steward supervisor. Looks Like we may be able to request the Tuesday night free for this event. What time does it start? Now I need to get our shirts made. |
Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: Tug the Cox Date: 18 Jul 10 - 07:47 AM Meet at 7.30 at the Middle bar. |
Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: Rumncoke Date: 18 Jul 10 - 10:15 AM Damn these knees or I'd be on for that - having used shanties when actually afloat and getting under sail - Let's see - there's Haul'em away and Cheerly Man I don't think have been mentioned yet - I used them for the fors'l and mains'l haliards. Has anyone suggested Blood Red Roses? I never needed the lifeboat, but it was always some comfort to know there were men dafter than you, who'd put out to sea to try to get you out of the fix you'd got yourself into. I know all the verses to 'For those in peril on the sea' though. Anne Croucher |
Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: Dave Earl Date: 18 Jul 10 - 10:33 AM "Damn these knees or I'd be on for that" Same here but a lot of us wil be staying with the Mother Ship for the evening watch so come and join us. Dave |
Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: VirginiaTam Date: 18 Jul 10 - 01:34 PM maybe we could get a fleet of mobility scooters and decorate them with sails and anchors and stuff |
Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: Tattie Bogle Date: 19 Jul 10 - 08:01 PM There's a shop in town just full of them; get them to sponsor the event! But they're not as easy to drive (sail?) as you might think!! |
Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: VirginiaTam Date: 24 Jul 10 - 06:35 AM the pack or decadry iron on transfer I bought from Staples yesterday is identical to the one I bought last year except for one thing. The new pack has transfer paper with no indicator on the back to let you know when the transfer is set. So I will return to Staples with all the evidence and request a refund. Local printer wants to charge £13 for the job. |
Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: Tug the Cox Date: 24 Jul 10 - 07:20 AM I can get you one for a tenner. |
Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: Tattie Bogle Date: 24 Jul 10 - 07:33 AM I'm just about to try mine: found an old plain white T-shirt, plus (probably older!) pack of Canon T-shirt transfer stuff: it has squares on it so you can line it up right, but nothing to show about setting. As for Decadry: I opened a pack of sticky labels the other day: supposed to be 65 per sheet, and there were 21 per sheet, even tho' all the packaging and even the backing paper said 65 per sheet! BTW, re mobility scooters: aren't there anough of these lethal weapons on the loose in Sidmouth already!! |
Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: VirginiaTam Date: 24 Jul 10 - 08:35 AM Tug Check your PMs. |
Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: VirginiaTam Date: 24 Jul 10 - 08:37 AM oops forgot to mention... I had 2 steroid injections last week, so am feeling much better. The walking will probably have to be slow but doable. Now waiting for our Steward supervisor to respond to my email. He asked if we had any particular times we wanted free and I specifically requested Tuesday evening and that we are easy with the rest of the time we are there. |
Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: Tattie Bogle Date: 24 Jul 10 - 09:31 AM Wey-hey, I've just done my T-shirt transfers, and it's looking good! BUT my printer is too intelligent by far (more so than me!) I told it I was doing T-shirt transfer paper so it re-mirrorised the already mirrorised image!! So I have "Cough up" on the front, the right way round, and "dekcuS I" on the back! |
Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: Tug the Cox Date: 26 Jul 10 - 01:40 PM Right...publicity release printed in Sidmouth herald...T shirts ordered...all I need now is some more offers of leading songs for the list. |
Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: VirginiaTam Date: 26 Jul 10 - 03:36 PM If you don't mind a very deep voiced female doing it, I can lead on Whup Jamboree, General Taylor, Shallow Brown, Lowlands, Heave Away Santyano, Run Come See Jerusalem. Can also lead on Haul Away Joe, The Leaving Shanty, Four Old Whores, Chicken on a Raft and Drop of Nelson's Blood (if I can use print out of words) |

Subject: RE: Any Shanty singers coming to Sidmouth? From: VirginiaTam Date: 08 Aug 10 - 04:29 PM Definitely loads of fun... but I must learn more shanties for next year. I was going to do Santyanno and General Taylor but mine are not traditional versions I think as others sang them differently. Great to meet mudcatters and put faces to names. as an aside to Terry the Shanty Annas is a fabulous name for girl group shanty singers. |
