Subject: Want to barter or trade for a banjo
From: Big Ballad Singer
Date: 04 Jul 10 - 12:22 PM

I am looking for a clawhammer or frailing banjo (the difference for me being that it doesn't have to have the "scoop" in the high end of the neck). Open-back, of course, would be preferred, but if someone has a resonator banjo they would trade or barter for, I would gladly take it as long as it's a good player. I've seen video of Tom Ashley playing mountain frailing style on a "bluegrass" banjo that simply blew me away.

The banjo only has to hold a tune and have low action (I perform with my long-time partner, Art Rightiss.) Cosmetics, brand, origin... I don't really care.

Anyway, I, like so many others these days, am cash-poor. I live in the greater New York/New Jersey region, and I teach guitar and harmonica. I also have many other things I could trade... if anyone wants to get creative in a trade, let me know.

I am always willing to travel, so please feel free to offer whatever you might have; I will gladly come to you if at all possible.

I also perform at the drop of a hat anyway, so I'd also be willing to take an instrument in lieu of pay for a gig or several gigs as well.

Thanks in advance... Mudcat is a wonderful place.

Regards,

BBS

Exactly where are you located? I'm in the PRinceton/Trenton area.

BBS-

Actually if you could provide us a link to a personal website, that might answer a whole lot of questions. Here's mine if you're interested: click here!

Acquiring a banjo can be a serious commitment.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Charlie (and others),

I have a couple of YouTube videos up, but nothing special yet... I am really a dinosaur when it comes to getting in step with the digital age, and I'm only 36.

PM me with any questions... I don't want to come off as dodgy or secretive, but I am not sure how to make myself more "knowable" when I don't have a personal website.

Just taking a shot that good, old fashioned horse-trading might do me and someone else some good in an otherwise rough financial sea.

Regards,

BBS

sorry but I am on the wrong side of the Atlantic to help or I would have been happy to donate one of my many banjos for a donation to a favourite charity

Alas, I just sold a working banjo yesterday, and am not done with fixing the fixer-upper I will work on next. I have a couple of collector's items that don't fit your 'no/little cash' problem (and that's why I'm selling the ones I am, truth to tell).

I hace some cheap tenors, but no 5-stringers, other'n my 'keepers,' at the moment. And even my 'extra' keepers are fretless, 19th C.-style banjos, not what you need.

Sorry 'bout that. Now I need to get to work on the busted S.S. Stewart I have -- that'll be a good 'un once I glue the heel of the neck back together and fix the neck angle at the same time.

If I come across anything soon, I'll let you know.

Bob Clayton

Songbob,

I would gladly take a tenor... I guess I forgot to mention that.

PM me and let's talk.

I AM a member... I have been on a friend's laptop and didn't want to log in there.

BBB,
I bought an open back starter kit for about $150 to mess around with frailing (and sold it for 145 a couple months later to a kid that loved it) If that's in your price range, you might check musician's friend (musiciansfriend.com) or whatever online instrument shop you browse.
The one I got was perfectly fine and sounded good. I've replaced it with a yardsale treasure, but if I needed a banjo, I'd order another like the one I had.

You can tell how serious a group this is. Twelve responses and no banjo jokes!

Be careful batering or trading with one who owns a banjo

Hi JD

What are your music interests? I see you posted on an old thread about trading for banjos. Do you play or are you interested in playing banjo?

I have a nice Vega Fairbanks 5 string and if the owner ever wants it back I will also be looking for one.
