Subject: Lyr Add: ENCORE UN RHUM (Renaud Detressan)
From: Monique
Date: 16 Jul 10 - 02:37 PM

Here is the French for it .I don't know enough English slang to translate that, it needs a native English speaker knowing French slang or at least some French speaker who knows much more English than I do. Who wants to give it a try?

ENCORE UN RHUM
[Renaud Detressan (alias Gary Wicknam)]

"Toi l' môme écrase un peu"
Me gueulait toujours mon vieux
Lui y' a qu'en mer qu'i' buvait pas
Un pied à terre rattrapait ça

Gonflant un peu mon n'veu
Pas cool si tu comprends mieux
Pourtant parfois j' sais pas pourquoi
Quand ça l' prenait i' m' racontait

REFRAIN :
Encore un rhum
Et puis un rhum
Pour s' mettre la tête
Cap sur Babylone
Patron sers-moi un rhum
BIS

A 14 ans la mine
18 ans encore la mine
Collé une tête au contremaître
Pas trop son truc le genre trouduc'

Voyait pas bien l'avenir
Pas clean si ça t' fait plaisir
Dans la marine on voit aut' chose
Y' a des frangines pas d' silicose

REFRAIN

Les glandes i' s' fait la marchande
Tous les bordels qui l'attendent
Vas-y qu' j' m'assomme, que j' fume l'opium
J' prends des bitures de toutes natures

Il aimait ça le vieux
C'était son trip si t'aimes mieux
I' s' prenait Dieu entre quat' z'yeux
Pour qu'il assure en cas d' coup dur

REFRAIN

Si tu m'entends là-haut
Fallait bien qu' tu saches, mat'lot
Que j' t'ai dans l' cœur mille fois par heure
Et qu' ça rend triste
Ton grand con d' fils

REFRAIN

From the CD (Première bordée), which was released in 1988.

Here is what I came to but the English doesn't sound as slangy/colloquial as the French. This is literal, not word for word but it's just the meaning, I didn't try to make it rhyme, or make it singable or anything, it's just the meaning though some expressions may not be equivalent.

"Toi l' môme écrase un peu"                                "You, kid/brat, shut up/pipe down a little"
Me gueulait toujours mon vieux                        My old man would always yell to me
Lui y' a qu'en mer qu'i' buvait pas                        It's only on the sea that 'e wouldn't drink
Un pied à terre rattrapait ça                                When on dry land he would catch up

Gonflant un peu mon n'veu*                                Somewhat a pain in the neck, Bleck
Pas cool si tu comprends mieux                        Not cool, if you understand this better
Pourtant parfois j' sais pas pourquoi                        Though, sometimes, I don't know why
Quand ça l' prenait i' m' racontait                        When it would ail 'im, 'e would tell me

REFRAIN :
Encore un rhum                                        One more rum
Et puis un rhum                                        And another rum
Pour s' mettre la tête                                        To get my head
Cap sur Babylone                                        Deading for Babylone
Patron sers-moi un rhum                                Boss, serve me a rum
BIS

A 14 ans la mine                                        At 14, (working at) the mine
18 ans encore la mine                                        At 18, still (working at) the mine
Collé une tête au contremaître                        Smashed the foreman's head in
Pas trop son truc le genre trouduc'                        The asshole kind is not his scene

Voyait pas bien l'avenir                                Couldn't figure out the future well
Pas clean si ça t' fait plaisir                                Not clean, if it pleases you (= if you get it better)
Dans la marine on voit aut' chose                        In the navy, you see more stuff
Y' a des frangines pas d' silicose                        There're chicks and no silicosis

REFRAIN

Les glandes i' s' fait la marchande                        Hacked off, goes (went) into the merchant navy
Tous les bordels qui l'attendent                        All the brothels a-waiting for him
Vas-y qu' j' m'assomme, que j' fume l'opium                Getting knocked down/stunned, smoking opium
J' prends des bitures de toutes natures**                Getting plastered in all sorts of ways.

Il aimait ça le vieux                                        My old man loved that
C'était son trip si t'aimes mieux                        It was his trip, if you like it better
I' s' prenait Dieu entre quat' z'yeux                        'e would talk to God face to face
Pour qu'il assure en cas d' coup dur                        So that he could go for it if things turned bad

REFRAIN

Si tu m'entends là-haut                                If you hear me (from) high there
Fallait bien qu' tu saches, mat'lot                        You sure had to know, mate,
Que j' t'ai dans l' cœur mille fois par heure                That you're in my heart a thousand times an hour
Et qu' ça rend triste                                        And that it makes
Ton grand con d' fils                                        Your big asshole of a son sad.

* Gonflant un peu mon n'veu = gonflant / un peu – mon neveu = he was a pain in the neck / a little – my nephew => gonflant un peu = he was somewhat a pain in the neck (or however you say it in proper English), "mon neveu" has no meaning here, it's just because it rhymes with "un peu", the same way we say "Relax, Max" though it's not about any Max (neither ours nor anybody else's!). We also say "Je veux, mon neveu!" meaning "Sure I want to!" or a strong "Sure!" = "no way it'd be othewise"
** I don't know how to translate that: in colloquial Fr. the expression "vas-y que…" that translates word for word as "go ahead that…" is a way to insist on the action (verb) that follows, meaning that the person would do it again and again / more and more as if not being able/wanting to stop. It's usually used in the 1st person though the actual person acting is someone else as in the song "vas-y que je m'assomme etc." = "I get stunned again and again etc." though his father was the one actually doing that.

Now... if someone wants to make it singable... you're welcome!

Thank you for that monique. I have the french words and it is claimed to be written by Soldat Louis who has recorded it on several CDs and is on utube.

I am told it is quite a favourite song throughout Brittany.

You're welcome. The band "Soldat Louis" was founded by Serge Danet (aka "Soldat Louis"-the guy), lead singer and Renaud Detressan who plays the guitar and writes their songs with or without Soldat Louis- the guy. So the song was indeed recorded by Soldat Louis -the band- and written by Renaud Detressan and Soldat Louis-the guy. It's mentioned there on their site.
The cd "Première bordée" I mentioned above is their first album.
I don't know about this particular song in Brittany but the band is famous all over France.

I'm puzzling over the chorus:

French:

Encore un rhum
Et puis un rhum
Pour s' mettre la tête
Cap sur Babylone
Patron sers-moi un rhum

Literal English:

One more rum
And another rum
To get my head
Deading (typo?) for Babylone
Boss, serve me a rum

Alternative English:

One more rum
And then another
To spin my head
Toward Babylone--
Boss, one more rum!

Charley Noble

Yes Charley, "deading" was a typo, it was "heading"
