Interesting tension between 'cliquey' and 'tight-knit'.

Sub-groups seem to evolve inside larger groups.

Probably a dissertation on it somewhere.

I'd love to join you someday. I understand the challenge of feeling welcome in an established group, so I'd want to tug on someone's figurative sleeve for help in becoming acquainted. Judging from what I know about several of the Mudcat participants, I'd expect no shortage of friendly welcomes.

Well of course people will know each other ,it is a Southern event and folks tend to stay in the south ,but not entirely. This is the sweetest event it is so friendly and welcoming , come again next year and you will know people, we have passed on songs and swapped tunes with several people since we came back home. This is what OUR music is about, events like this. Well done Alan and his merry band.
I hope that the Marrow buyers are enjoying them

Liz, no-one could possibly be so cruel as to be to rude to six women who had lost their virginity in public...especially as most people just looked on scoffing cream scones!

I'm so sorry to hear that Peter, especially as we do try very hard to make newcomers welcome and I know there are others who would report we succeeded.

Of course there is the inevitable catching up with old friends and news from the year, a lot of us DO know one another well and I make no apology for that but, as I say, we all try hard to make people welcome and I am really sorry we somehow missed you.

Peter Jones

I guess most festivals have cliques of people who've been before, or who came as a group, but we tried to make sure that no-one was left out of the singing at the singarounds, or without a group of people to sit and sing with at the banquet, especially people who hadn't been to a Wail before. I'm sorry if we failed to clock you as a Wail virgin, and make sure you were looked after.

I've not posted here before, but I feel a need to.

This was my first 'Wail' and whilst there was some undoubtedly fine singing, I found the cliquey behaviour (of some) quite distasteful.

I'll leave it at that.

the organiser Alan White wishes it to be known that though there is predominantly unaccompanied singing most of the time, he has never said that musical instruments to accompany the singing were unwelcome

Given that the website states: Imagine... few, if any, musical Instruments!

he kind of has....

I will work out what is causing this phantom post, bloody thing
We had a wonderful weekend just a bit shattered on Sunday but that was well worth it Great to put faces to names and to meet up with old singing mates and there were some cracking singers and clinking songs.
Wonderful for the singer and the song to be shewn respect, so important

Lovely weekend, as always, my favourite of the year and already looking forward to next year, and for all those who moan about unaccompanied singing, the organiser Alan White wishes it to be known that though there is predominantly unaccompanied singing most of the time, he has never said that musical instruments to accompany the singing were unwelcome, and indeed there were a few in atendance, as usual. It was also a great thrill to meet my first ever santee, Jenny O, her lovely man, Rob and Max too. Now, I've got a loads of photos to sort! will post them when I get myself sorted!
Cheers, Lucy

Thanks Morti - we had a great anniversary weekend, and it sounds as though you and Idris did too!

Soupdragon should be on MGAS's register, I think?

Congratulations to the EJOG Elforforiti table for their song at the banquet, for which they were awarded the pig's head, and to Task Force for their ingenuity in preventing the theft of the pig's head this year...

Thanks especially to Alan and Nikki, but there are so many other people to thank too!

Looking forward to next year.

Rob and I had a lovely time yesterday meeting Max and some of the other Catters we'd never met before. I told Max it's all his fault that we are together, since we met online on the Mudcat group on Facebook nearly 3 years ago now. We got some good photos yesterday which we'll put on Facebook soon, but meanwhile we are back to the Wail today for more singing. A much more full report tomorrow when it is all over. We'll definitely be there next year!!!

A pretty inaccurate observation, Guest JJ. If you read down the thread, there are plenty of males enthusiastic about it too.

If so happens that two males who can't do without their instruments commented unfavourably early on- why they chose to open the thread at all I know not, if this is not their thing.

Chacun a son gout! :)

Hey JJ, there are lots of fellas who rave about the Wail too, maybe not just here, just now!

Yes, we're planning on doing a marathon drive to bring Max to the Wail on Saturday, but we're hoping not to disturb the proceedings too much. It will only be for a couple of hours, but it will surely be quality time. I'll bring a Mudcat Register for us to sign, Max is keeping them as souvenirs of his trip. Safe journeys all!
