Subject: Tech: question for max
From: open mike
Date: 09 Aug 10 - 03:12 AM

wondering if there is a saved copy of Aine's songbook?
we cussed and discussed the re-vival of her song challenge series,
and it came up about her songbook, and the drop down link
is dysfunctional. i was able to pull it up on archive.org/waybackmachine
but only the index of titles. the links there did lead to the songs
(as of august 2005 i think) but to re-create them all would be major
project. I am not sure how to contact Aine to ask her.

thanks for doing what you do.

Not sure, but is http://reocities.com/SoHo/Easel/5746/ the right one?

There might be a clue at this search for posts by Áine, although I don't see a thread in the more recent ones that looks like it might make reference to the songbook.

(The search on Aine - without the Á - gets only 30 posts ending in 2001.)

Both Max and Aine told me they were saving the files to backup when the alert came around that Geocities would be shutting down. So I assume the data is safe somewhere. I am not sure what has to happen to now port them to another host somewhere, as all the internal tags are probably absolute links to the now-disappeared geocities domain.

I'm not sure if that link John in Kansas put up gives links to all all the songs in the Songbook, but I think it may well. Thanks!

There are some great songs in there... I've bookmarked it - but just in case it goes walkabout, could someone please make sure it's backed-up safely?

Thanks JohninKS!

I seem to recall someone, in a thread this year, mentioning an archive. Can't remember who or where, though.

at first i thot that reocities was a typo for geocities...
but it seems to be the right place to find the songbook...
perhaps the link in the drop down menu above can be changed
to go to the new location?

is amos now the keeper of thesongbook?

is itavailable fornew entries?

if the song challenge tradition gets re-instated can submissions be
added?

I am not the Keeper. I do not know how "reocities" came about--perhaps geocities did a massive dump to save people's stuff?

Anyway, that's the right front page.

If it gets reopened, it ought to be as "Volume Two" or something like that. As it stands it's a historic document of a sort, with Áine's beloved fingerprints all over it, and that ought to be preserved.

Since I couldn't remember where Áine put the diacritical mark, I wasn't able initially to find many of her posts. The same problem prevented finding anything on "Aine's Songbook" with a Google on the mudcat site (without the Á), but a site-only Google search for "Songbook" found multiple references to the "Mudcat Songbook," suggesting that it might be the same one.

A full web Google for Mudcat Songbook found the site I linked; but I couldn't find anything obvious to indicate it was Áine's.

The front page is essentially a TOC, but the titles are linked "to somewhere," so it appears that a complete book may be up.

The html code (hex char value) for the mysterious Á is Á - recovered from one of her posts that I eventually found, in case someone may want to look up info to record historical notes or trace (mudcat) background on the songs.

If links from other new pages to material in geocities were made before geocities closed, they will still work. My site was originally on geocities and I realized a while back that my pages had been moved to my frayedtrain.com location, but the links to enlarged pictures and midis went back to geocities. I've been redoing the links by stages, if only for luck, but the old links have worked so far.

From Wiki

Archiving GeoCities websites

Shortly after the GeoCities closing announcement, the Internet Archive announced a project to archive GeoCities pages, stating "GeoCities has been an important outlet for personal expression on the Web for almost 15 years." Internet Archive made it their task to ensure the thoroughness and completeness of their archive of GeoCities sites.

The website InternetArchaeology.org also archived and is showcasing artifacts from GeoCities.

The operators of the website ReoCities downloaded as much of the content hosted on GeoCities as they could before it shut down and intend to create a mirror of GeoCities, albeit an incomplete one.

Another site which is attempting to build an archive of defunct GeoCities web sites is GeoCities.ws. Although it is using the GeoCities name, it is not clear from the site what its relationship with the original GeoCities is.

Other sites with this purpose are Geociti.es and oocities.com.

From elsewhere in the article, the original geocities apparently still offers web hosting for paid accounts, but the free pages previously available are now offered in Japan only.

On my PC to get Á you just depress the Alt Gr key just to the right of the shift bar, and then the relevant vowel (and caps key. Simlarly you can have é í ó or ú - any vowel except y, upper or lower case.

If someobdy would like to make a Mudcat Songbook PermaThread, I'd be willing to help. It should be somebody with a good knowledge of HTML. It may not be an exact copy of the Mudcat Songbook Website, but I think we can come up with a pretty good imitation. It will be a lot of work because there are lots of songs there, but I think it would be nice to have the Songbook at Mudcat.

this thread, songs from the mudcat songbook, says it is a permathread
http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=90938&messages=58
That's a separate thing administered by Amos, for links to recordings of songs from the Mudcat Songbook. The PermaThread I started will duplicate the offsite Mudcat Songbook lyrics collection, and possibly add to that.

The link John in Kansas gave us definitely is connected to the Mudcat Songbook, but I know it's not the whole thing.

Why would I say that? Because I know I had at least two songs in the Songbook, and despite assiduous searchings up and down the list there, nowhere, nowhere could I find a song credited to either Uncle DaveO or Dave Oesterreich. I know not what else may be missing, but that I know.

It sure would have been great to have a search capability there.

Dave Oesterreich

Hi, Dave-
Can you check in the Additions threads and see if Aine included it there? We'll post additions after we have the original songbook posted.

The reocities site somehow blocks a search on the page. View Source, and search within the source, shows at least a couple of entries for "Dave," but at least one of those is "by Dave (the ancient mariner)." I don't know for sure what Áine may have called Dave O (publicly) but is that a possibility?

The links I've tried do work, and the source code imples that they're all - or mostly - "local" so moving the whole package should still work, but I don't see a good way to locate the targets in a way that would allow copying them as a bulk package.

The wiki article on geocities gave a couple of other places that may have archived at least parts of the geocities content, so it's possible that one of those may have something more easily recoverable; but I don't feel quite up to working on my page design skills enough to try to penetrate them.

Thanks to the link to the "additions" -- I'll try to gather them all up into their own Permathread as well. Whew, this is going to be a chore! In a good way.

One of the things I want to do is make a set of links to various pages on the mudcat that are mostly people's songs (like the Foolstroupe Songbook currently on the front page), or Mudcatters' song websites. So if anybody has any, PM me or post them here.
