Max, I know you mean well, but the green SHOP thing is irritating and, well, for example in the thread of condolences to Doug, there are these breakouts into shopping. This is in poor taste. I know you don't mean it, but this is the sort of thing that will happen. The random underlining (it seems random) also wrecks the way in which people do their own underlining. It is like a rash. Please do something with it.
yours, Peter T.

It's driving me nuts, too. Max says he's working on it - see "News" in upper right. If it continues to drive me nuts, I'll figure out how it selects things for links and post whole messages in green.

Jeri, Longing for reconciliation - I don't mind the trouble if one day, bye and bye, it's alright.

Max--I like the idea and I COMPLETELY understand...seems like a neat idea.......But, I am with Peter and Kat on this too.......Is there some way to do away with this on the occasional thread like the one to Doug? If not, it's OK, but maybe something in this case? Lord knows we are all grateful for everything you do and any way you can get additional funding is fantastic. I guess it just comes off bad in this case, ya' know? All in the timing in this case.

I think it is a great idea, just not in threads such as the one I first saw it in, Doug's. I think it would be better, as a random message at the different pages, i.e. at the top of the list of threads, etc. rather than in the individual postings themselves.

It reminds me a little of the Kmart blue-light specials, but I really don't mind it. I hope that you can find some happy medium, Max, maybe where it only appears at the heading of a post and not in the text of it?

If you feel like we've jumped down your throat, it is only because of it being in Doug's thread. Sorry and thank you. The changes have been wonderful.

kat: That was my first thought, just in the heading of each message, not in the body. THought maybe to change the color of the words in the message bodies slightly (like dark gray) but not making them a link. As I said in the news, this is an experiment, and we will be messing with it for the next couple of weeks.

Would it be possible, that on the threads where the links are considered "inappropriate", to email Max or one of his duly appointed reps to have the links turned off for the thread? Most threads would have no reason for it to be turned off, and the very few that would hopefully wouldn't create too much work?

Of course, it's all dependant on the tech. I'm willing to live with it, as the potential is great for song threads.

Thanks Max... Look forward to seeing what you come up with next. Keep the Beta Test Flame alive.

No, emails would not be appropriate. That would overwhelm us with our daily workload. Remember that the Mudcat does not make money, therefore is a hobby and we can only spend so much time on it. I'm going broke here as it is with all the time we spend here.

I'm gonna see if, for one, I can let the volunteers have control of that, and two, when creating a thread, letting the creator decide if they would like it to happen in their thread. Not sure if its possible, but we'll see.

Max-- Is there some way to give control of the green links to the poster? If I were posting a condolence note, a green clicky thing would be annoying. But if I were posting about music, and a song I referred to was available on a CD available from the Mudcat shop, it would be a wonderful thing. Is there a way so that, if I think it's the second kind of thread, I can invoke the green linky software and it will set up links I hadn't dreamed possible, but if it's the first kind of post, I can squelch it?

Another manifestation of the green links: Perhaps the green links could automatically come in if I referred to another Mudcat thread?

Just some ideas for your experimentation...

[p.s. it's annoying as h***!]

Sounds wonderful. Something I'd be worried about with letting the thread creator control the insertion of the links would be some of the new people who'd probably turn it off just because... and those tend to be the music/lyric requests the links could be most useful for.

Other than that, as has been said, we do appreciate the work, Max. Sorry if it's come off any other way.

Add me to the "annoyed" list. But also to the "sympathetic about the need to make money God Knows" list. This is a dilemma, and we should all be patient with Max while he thinks of a solution. As a certified TechnoBimbo, I am not the person to offer one.

I agree that there are some threads where it is absolutely out of place. Others have pointed these out.

But there also are examples of how the green links are doing REALLY silly stuff. See the thread about "There was an old piper." Sandy Paton's reference to his wife, Caroline, has been turned into a "shop" link. Is she for sale????? Do we need to know something? His discussion of how to transcribe music in solfege, in which he refers to his "do-re-mi's" immediately links to the song. Perhaps when computers can be trained to use judgement.... Kathy

Hi all, Max and the rest of us decided to turn off the links in the messages for now. We will reassess our strategies next week.

For now at most you should see the links next to the Shop: in the heading of each message. Not in the body or subject of the message.

Actually, Brian, that's not that bad of an idea! Is there any way you could fix it so that no matter what's going on in the body, the header carries the links?

I can see the concern over body links in the more 'serious' personal messages. But it would seem that having links in the header (under "shop", as they have been)would be an acceptable base level, as when they are there they do not interfere with the text in any form.

Without going into the mechanics or other discussion on the links in the body, would this be a possible temporary fix? I'd hate the thought of Max missing out on any potential support. God knows we abuse his hospitality enough as it is.

Max, I do find it amazing that there are so many songs I didn't know about that show up as green links. It is pretty neat actually. When I first saw it, there was the word "Montana" in green, and I was surprised to click and find a song with that title that I didn't know about. Now that the song link is not in the body of the message, I think it is a pretty creative feature. Good for you. More points for Max in tweaking this site to ever better functioning.

I understand my fellow citizens annoyance. But folks, remember, if you want to preserve this place then make sure you do your shopping with people, such as Folk Legacy, who have an agreement with Mudcat. It must be a discipline. While I didn't care for the links, it was a signal to me that Max is desperately struggling to find ways to finance this place.

Damn it, Max is NOT hustling for the greenback dollar! He's trying to find a way to keep the Mudcat afloat for all of us. I find Gargoyle's comment unworthy of consideration.

Sure, I run a small folk music label that stands to benefit from the Mudcat Shop enterprise, but please understand that my label has never really paid it's own way. I could try to put out more commercially viable stuff, I suppose, but that's not what I'm interested in doing with my life. Caroline and I have been fortunate in that we could always supplement our income with performances, just as Max subsidizes the Mudcat with his other work. Neither Max nor Folk-Legacy have been exactly overwhelmed with orders entered through the shop, and I doubt that Wally has been, either.

I think Gargoyle owes Max an apology!

Sandy, I think so too, but I doubt we'll see one - ever. In any case, Gargoyle's comment is unworthy of consideration.

I suspect Max puts more work into Mudcat and spends more money on it than most of us realize - even if we have vivid imaginations. I/we appreciate it and understand he can't go on throwing money at Mudcat (in the form of hours of work and upgrades) without funds coming in from somewhere.

Sandy...

Calm down... That's what Gargoyle's here for. To try and rile up the regulars.

From what it sounded like, Max is one of many people owed an apology from G, and getting mad about one troll doesn't fix things.

Just do what the rest of us are doing. Ignore the troll, and the troll will eventually go somewhere that people will pay attention to them.

Other than that, it sounds like the current incarnation of the green links is meeting with a fair amount of popular support. I (for one) love what Max is doing, and (as soon as I actually have a job) will be doing what I can to support him through these.

I've got a wish list item (American Collection of Folk) that's being listed at about $15 less than I've found it at any other source.

Now THAT'S a good thing to have!

I will never post again regarding the gargoyle situation, (and have not before)however angry his apparent return has made me. I so much wanted to apologise to Doug R. re: the incredibly insensitive remark made after Doug informed us of his tragic loss, but I felt that even in a situation like that I had to refrain from falling into the trap. The constant nazi references and brilliantly strategic disruptions have taken me often to the limit of my patience, but in future I will not respond. I truly hope the rest of this caring community is able to follow suit.

Sandy,
It is alright to get righteously upset. I think that your comment, for the most part was right on the mark. A lot of the good folks that come here are not the consistent denizens that many of the regulars are, and might mistake Max's intent as an attempt to make a buck for all his work. Personally, I don't have a problem with that either. The man dedicates himself to a project to the detriment of other things in his life. Seems to me that he should be able to throw a farthing in his own kitty if he can and still keep it the Mudcat we all love. But as you said so well,(and the same holds true, in spades for you and Caroline, and for a lot more years than even our beloved 'Cat has been around), this is not an attempt to make money. It is an attempt to not have a labor of love cost money. IF WE LOVE THIS PLACE AS MUCH AS WE SAY WE DO, and I believe most of us do, then we should support it by using these links as often as possible.

Max, I am with you on this and will try to continue, as much as possible, to support you with my commerce. I have one request, and that is to give Caroline and Sandy's label a little more play. They are regular contributors. Other than that, full steam ahead, my friend.

Mick

Well, I like the thread tracking - helped me discover what gargoyle's name was. And I like my T-shirt. And I like the fact that companies I suspect don't make a heck of a lot of money are donating some to Mudcat.

The 'Shop' thing worked really well when Art recently wrote a message with a whole bunch of song titles in it.

SeanM, the thing about noise is, if it continues long enough it just sort of blends into the background and becomes insignificant.

Why is he here and why is he being acknowledged at all? Why is he so mean and vindictive? He must have been badly hurt in his life. Why does he feel he is soo much better than the rest of us and has the right to determine the use of this site? He must have a really bad inferiority complex or serious delusions of granduer. Why is there no gentleness here or tolerance of his fellow man? He might be more intelligent than some of us (maybe not), but he certainly is NOT better.

I don't know exactly how much unpaid time that Max and his elves have put in to make these recent improvements in Mudcat, but I do know that it was equivalent to a very decent annual salary.

That time was GIVEN to us and will never be recovered by those guys.

The very best that we can hope for is that our continued support will allow them to keep solvent and keep The Mudcat going for us. The guys are trying to run a business and they take time out to work for us, but they NEVER bug us with advertisements for their own business.

As for the green thingies. Well, it was just an unfortunate coincidence that they were launched at the time we lost someone we loved. We will get used to them and eventually come to value them for the service which they provide.

I expect a thread to start pretty soon on amusing green thingies. Where they find a song title where none was intended in the message.

Thanks again, Max and all the elves.

Bert.

And the Litte Red Hen said, "Who will help me till the earth?"

Not I said the Cows. Not I said the Mule, and the Horse, and the Cat, and the Dog, and all the rest.

So the little Red Hen tilled the earth alone.

Then she asked, who will help me plant the wheat.

Not I said the Cows. Not I said the Mule, and the Horse, and the Cat, and the Dog, and all the rest.

So she planted the seed herself.

Then she asked, who will help me weed and water the plants as they grow?

Not I said the Cows. Not I said the Mule, and the Horse, and the Cat, and the Dog, and all the rest.

So she watered and tended them herself.

And when the wheat was heavy and ripe she asked, Who will help me harvest and chafe and grind the wheat.

Not I said the Cows. Not I said the Mule, and the Horse, and the Cat, and the Dog, and all the rest.

And when all the wheat was ground into flour she asked, Who will help me bake the bread?

Not I, said the Cows. Not I, said the Mule, and the Horse, and the Cat, and the Dog, and all the rest.

And when the bread was made she asked, Who will help me eat the bread?

I will! said each animal in turn.

Geez! What nerve she said to herself, but being gracious she just rolled her eyes and said help yourself.

"Kind of dry" said the cow, ruminating on a large slice.

"Salty too" said the horse, reaching for a second helping.

"I like rye better, don't you?" said the dog.

"Oh yes, much better" replied the cat, "and with butter too".

"You know, this is really good bread, but why couldn't we have sandwiches" said the Mule.

And while not all of the animals complained, all shared in the bread. All the while, the Hen was gracious, thanking each of the complainers for their input. She didn't even blink when all the animals walked away without offering to help clean up after the feast.

I think that's one incredible hen, don't you?

Like a bee in our bonnet

Or an anorism in our brain

I suppose we can all ignore the
Little Green Meanies

Hi Max...I HATE the green things!!!! They are annoying and asthetically unpleasant and pander to the basest commercial mentality! Take them out immediately! And I'm not gonna kiss your ___ about this being a free site and how wonderful it is and all and just go ahaead and do whatever you have to!!

However....since you appear to have your own patent pending on this, congratulations on something else clever!I hope you sell it to lots of other sites and take it off this one! love and kisses, harpgirl

Wow, that's a bit fierce harpgirl, love!. I don't see how it can be 'Basest commercial mentality' when Max is sailing pretty close to the wind trying to keep his business and Mudcat running at the same time. And don't forget that he is also providing a means for some small 'folk' labels to keep solvent.

I think we should take stock of the realities in this situation and cut him a bit of slack.

'sides, I LIKE them little green critters.

Bert.

Since refrence was made to the green thingies in the messages I received as a result of Catspaw initiating a Thread enabling Mudcatters to transmit messagess to me, I'd like to comment. I haven't counted the number of messages I recieved but there were lots. And I will confess to you that I did not even notice the green thingies until it was mentioned in this Thread. I concentrated on the messages and did not notice one green thingy. Since I didn't notice them, I could hardly take offense to them.

If they are intended to call attention to advertisers and thereby raise money to support the Mudcat, perhaps they should be larger or in a color that would be more eye-catching!

These remarks are not made to spark additional fireworks. I just don't think the thingies are something I'd break my pick on. There are bigger things out there.

Love, DougR

Hmmm, some of you seem to be missing the real point. This is not commercialism, nor simply an effort to make money. In fact The Mudcat makes little or no money off of this. (The auction is where we make our money) It is a service to Mudcatters, to try to help you find interesting and hard to find folk things based on your questions, interests, conversations, etc. It also helps those like Folk Legacy stay afloat to continue to distribute good stuff, and record history that wouldn't otherwise be bothered with. Lord knows they aren't getting rich doing this stuff, so why do you think they do it? It may be easy to say you appreciate what Sandy and Caroline do, and the Mudcat and Digitrad, but that does squat for us. My landlord won't accept warm fuzzies for the rent.

All I am trying to do is what I did already with people here. Traditional music et al is not a mainstream concept so corporations don't bother with it. I know maybe 3 people in my area that give a hoot about traditional music. So conversation and events are thin. So I make the assumption that I am not alone in the world and that there are more than 3 people out there that I would like to hang out with, and I created the Mudcat. This makes geography irrelevant, and brings us together across the time zones and oceans, gives us a global perspective, and someone to talk to about the things we love. I found a lot more than 3 people here, and have a lot more to talk about.

So take it another step, all the record stores in my local area have little or no traditional music department. I thought, "Hey, let me extend the success of the Mudcat community and provide these kind people access to things they would buy anyway if their local record shops had it." I've been listening to all of you for 3 years "Where can I find this, and where can I find that?" And I am simply trying to do the leg work once, and put it all in one place, and make it easy to find and buy, and have delivered to your doorsteps at a fare price.

Now that we have everything pretty much set up, the goal is to get deals with international and small local distributors that have never sold a product in the US. The goal is to offer things that you would never find elsewhere, thereby providing you a service. And since we are non-profit, we don't have to make a profit and charge you for that profit, the stuff will be available for less than any for-profit company could ever sell it for, which they would't bother to do anyway. All you complainers out there are really looking at this backwards. You think we're doing this for us, while we think we're doing for you. You think we're doing this for the money? Again, you think Sandy and Caroline do this for money?

I have maintained an integrity with this site that surprises even me. We refuse banner ads, though they could make us money. We could charge membership fees, but we don't. I could do like public radio and shut down the site till we get such and such amount of money then turn it back on, but we don't. People say, and I believe them, that if I no longer care to publish the Mudcat, someone else will. Do you think they will maintain the same integrity that I have? My prediction is that once they realize the cost and time in maintaining this site, that NO they won't.

The whole point is that even if we don't get a dime Dick and I won't shut down, but we will be unable to put so many new songs in, won't have time to do the tunes, won't be able to purchase the new software to make the site faster, won't be able add the features that you request like a chat, won't be able to respond to emails with questions and problems promptly or at all, won't be able to afford the Real Audio server for radio shows, won't be able to continue to enhance and grow the site...

Any money that comes in is not to continue the existence of the Mudcat and Digitrad, because as long as our hearts beat they will be here, but to make them better. I want to make them better. Do you?

Well said, Max! I think it is important for phoaks to remember it is

non-profit

; that just leaves the accusations of commericalism in the dirt. Gawd we can be a whiney lot, sometimes. Ever feel like the parents of a bunch of two year olds, Dick & Max? Susan?

Keep the green thingies and may they ever link us to all that we love about trad music!

Max. No disagreement here. You have the vision. You do the work.

My personal opinion is that anything you come up with for the Mudcat gets the benefit of the doubt for a good long while. Only fitting for the creator of the single greatest site on the web.

What troubles me most is that I read this to Cletus and he understood perfectly!
