As some of you know, we are now a family of 3 after several years of waiting. Jeremiah is currently 5 months old and has forever changed our lives in the most wonderful way imaginable. Some of you have asked about him and so I thought I'd just keep a running post here for anyone who is interested. :)
So...let's start with today. As I sit here in my recliner looking around the living room, I see a Pack & Play, a Baby Einstein hoppy, activity center, a swing, a small bucket of toys and a quilt on the floor covered with a fabric, crinkly book of animals, a bead toy thingamabob, Moo (Jeremiah's best bud) and a colorful, crinkly star with lots of textures. Jeremiah is currently in his swing happily trying to stuff both of his hands in is mouth. He has started teething and has been a pretty uncomfortable camper. I took him to the doctor yesterday to have him checked over to make sure his sudden screaming outburts weren't caused by anything more than the teething. His little mouth is very swollen but it's just teething. We started a regimen of infant advil to reduce the swelling and relieve the pain per the doctor. I've tried Orajel and he hates it. I know it must make his mouth numb because it numbs my fingers instantly! He has teething toys that I keep cold but the thing that has worked the best so far is a cold, damp washcloth....he likes to chew on that (or my thumb) which is fine by me!
Anyway, welcome to the world Little One....I can't tell you how happy I am that you are here!

Michelle

You beat me to it. I was going to suggest a frozen wash cloth, Michelle. Works for puppies!

When we look back several months, we'll take these kinds of problems any day of the week...

Just give him some moonshine an' all will be well... Jus' funnin'...

Hey, Jeremiah... Now quit bitin' mommy...

Need to get that youngin' a kitten or puppy to chew on...

I love the title of your thread and it sounds like things are going well. My daughter and I both swear by Hylan's Teething Tablets which, here, are available in all of the major grocery stores. It didn't matter what else we gave Morgan, the tablets really did the trick along with the frozen washcloth already mentioned.

Welcome to Mudcat, little guy.:-)

I grew up in a Catholic family in a Jewish neighborhood in Detroit. Bagels are the perfect remedy for teething. There's nothing better - but Zweiback will do in a pinch.

Good luck!

Something that lets the tooth break through (Zwieback) is what was around when I was a kid. When my kids were babies there were water-filled rings, and the warning was to avoid actually freezing these because that cold can cause harm, but chilled was okay. Might want to Google that or check with your pediatrician's nurse.

My plea as one parent to another: any time the child is in the room, awake and paying attention to you, if you're using a device like a phone or a computer or a private music player, etc., it sends a message of second-class citizenship to a child. When you're with him, be his totally. Of course teach about manners, keeping the noise down when you're on the phone, etc., but I always am saddened when I see things like parents in the grocery store, pushing a baby in the cart and talking on the phone, ignoring the child. Such great one-on-one moments like that shouldn't be wasted.

Have you posted any new photos?

SRS

I grew up in a Polish family where the heel of a loaf of rye bread was used as a teething soother. It would eventually become a bit tattered and soggy but I remember the babies being reluctant to have it taken away.

I second that, SRS. It is really sad to see little kids trailing along behind a parent or caretaker who is busy on a cellphone while doing others things, too. Talk about making a kid feel unimportant, rejected, etc. esp. when their little legs cannot keep up with the adult in charge.

My dau. and I used to have a blast taking Morgan shopping when he was a baby. People naturally gravitate to babies and when they'd see his red hair and blue eyes, they'd say all kinds of things. It was also so stimulating and fun; the attention has really shown up in his self-confidence.

Today we go to court to finalize the adoption. The birthmother has signed all her paperwork giving up her rights and it has been reported to me that she said she feels this is in Jeremiah's best interest. To me, that says she loves her baby beyond words and I will be forever grateful to her for that. However, it is POSSIBLE, although NOT PROBABLE that she could appear in court today (she is not expected or needed at the hearing) and say she has changed her mind. My adoption agent does not feel that this will happen and in the past she has been upfront about telling us when she didn't think things would work out or if there was an iffy situation. Anyway, we would be grateful for all good thoughts and prayers that the finalization goes off without a hitch. Jeremiah fits our family like a glove and we love him beyond measure....can't imagine it to be any other way.

I used the frozen washcloth for my kids too and still use one to ease headache.

I don't think Jeremiah is in any danger of being ignored. Seems to me that his parents and grandma are so interested in every lovely little sound and deed.

I think this thread is missing sumfin though... insert link to piccies here please.

Good thoughts and thanksgivings for a smooth day in court. May it be final and done for your family to stay as it is. This or something better for the highest good of all concerned.

Love to all!

SRS...couldn't have said it any better myself! It's been the lowest of lows and the highest of highs!!! :)

Thanks everybody!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was WONDERFUL to wake up this morning and KNOW that we will be sharing our mornings with Jeremiah for a very long time!!!

Our latest adventure today includes a trip to the grocery store after church. I'm standing in line behind someone I know and a friend of mine was 2 people behind me in the line. People are chit-chatting and my adorable, beautiful son started grunting and emitting a smell that I'm not sure anyone could love. Timing is everything, isn't it?!?!?!? All I can do is laugh. I love my little stink pot!!!

stink pot.... giggle...

At Andie's baby dedication she was grunting, turning purple, screaming and leaving sticky yellow diarrhoea running down her legs and my white suit. Talk about embarrassing moments.

Would give anything to be back in that moment and do it all over again.

Hugs are therapeutic. Start training early. When Jeremiah is a 30ish father, about 6ft something it should be an absolute truth of his existance that he is still a perfect hugging size child. It's worked in my family. My grands know the line & I get their hugs often. You like it now--just you wait. Tw

No. I'm sorry, I can't meet with you until 1:00pm.

Oh gee, I'd love to but I'm busy until 1:00pm.

That's me. Practicing to say no. No, I can't meet you for lunch at noon. No, I can't go shopping with you until noon. No, I can't make the doctor's appointment before 1:00pm. No. No. No.

Why is that you might ask? My son needs a mid-morning nap at this stage in his life. He is a wonderfully happy baby when he is on schedule. He does well with a schedule but when silly Mommy goes and messes it up by making plans for the day and changing up naptime, well, let's just say it isn't pretty.

I met someone for lunch today at noon. We gabbed for 2 hours. Jeremiah had had half of his mid-morning nap and did very, VERY well. On the way home, however, we got caught up in construction traffic that was at a standstill for 30 minutes. Poor kid had all he could stand and wailed for 25 of those 30 minutes. I decided to forgo my early evening plans of a sitter and early yoga in exchange for Jeremiah to have a nice nap and for me to have a little down time or to get things done whichever my body will allow for today. My sitter graciously agreed to watch him tomorrow night so I can go to a yoga class then instead of today.

Jeremiah likes structure and routine. I made the schedule now I need to stick to it. It won't kill me or my friends to wait an extra hour for lunch or to wait until a day when that will work. That's just the way it's going to be for now.

In other fun baby news, Jeremiah got a walker this weekend. I put it together yesterday and waited for Daddy to get home for Jeremiah's maiden voyage. The camera was all charged and ready to take a video of this historic event. Daddy put Jeremiah in the walker, Mommy powered up the camera, Jeremiahed smiled and cooed but um....his feet don't reach the ground!!!!!   A little more tinkering later today will lower the seat as much as possible and we'll try again. Jeremiah didn't seem to mind not reaching the ground as there are sliding beads on the tray of the walker...one of his most favorite toys to tinker with!!! So....feet on the ground or not, it was a hit!!! YAY!!!!

Bag of carrot batons in the fridge - kept Limpit from screaming the house down when she was teething. Make them long enough so that they're easy to hold but big enough that it's hard to take a bite out of them. They're cool, non-poisonous and give a bit on the gums so it isn't so painful.

He's a sweetie, good luck!

Two things worked for the teething pain....the first was a temporary distraction.....time in the tub. That brought smiles....but only for maybe half an hour and then it was back to screaming. The poor baby is just inconsolable (he doesn't want to play, doesn't want to be held or sung to). Per doctor's orders, he's had infant ibuprofen and some orajel....still clearly in pain...hand in his mouth, drooling, crying. I have tried everything I can think of and finally layed him down in his pack and play. Two minutes later he is sound asleep. Perhaps he just needed some space.

Sleep well little boy.
Mommy will be here when you wake up.
XOXOXOXO
