Hi folks, Just a note to say what a fab night i had last Friday at the Prestwich Folk Club in Manchester hosted by Kevin Tarpey.

The guests were Acoustic Collective - great muscicians and singers. The club is held every Friday evening upstairs in the Parkside Hotel - behind Heaton Park. Web site is.........

This brings back memories of the many times I was a guest at an earlier Prestwich folk club. It was in a pub called The Church, and run by George Purcell. Whatever happened.........?

Thanks Vin2. George Purcell was a god friend but as so often happens we lost touch long ago. I believe he wa a schoolteacher, possibly a headmaster. We were both fans of Josh White.

I have fond memories the old Prestwich Folk Club run by George Purcell in the 60s and 70s. There was a thriving scene based around the Church at that time with excellent singers and musicians like Graham Walker, John Cartain, Pete Connell, Dave Pollard and others in the group Redmayne. There was also John McAtee, a great guitarist & blues singer, and Martin Hall of Jolly Jack was (and still is I believe) a "Church" regular.

There was also a singer / songwriter Barry Oates, one of whose songs "Mild and Bitter Days" about the passing of old traditional pubs was reputed to be about the Church. The song has been recorded on Redmayne's CD. Anyone know where Barry is now?

I had an old friend from Prestwich called Brian Moss, who died in the ninetys - played guitar and sang folk and blues back in the sixties. Anyone remember him?

I remember going to the Eagle and Child many years back but I am not sure if that is Prestwich or just close by. The club was run for a while by Steve Robinson - Anyone know what happened to him? Saw a number of good acts there including Des Friel and Martin Alcock. Also remember my and my mate Dave (Daves are attracted to each other. Didn't you know?) walking home to Pendlebury one very snowy night and, noticing that the M62 seemed to be devoid of traffic, saved about half an hour by walking back along the hard shoulder!

Graham Walker of Redmayne here.......good to read your comments mate, long time no see............regarding your query about where Barry Oates is now........we met up about 6 months ago, and he told me that this was his last contract before retiring, I believe that they, Barry and Julie are going to settle in Penang as it's one of their favourite places.
Hoping you and yours are well, rock on with the old times, nearly forgot, I paid a visit to Georgie ( Purcell) today and we did a bit of reminiscing, must do it more often.

Hi all I was a regular at the Church Inn from 69 to 70 and have fond memories of those days the atmosphere was fantastic l remember we had a petition to remove the juke box great days a party every night and the best of company and music glad to know it lives on still best wishes from Jean in the land of OZxx

I used to sit in George's corner in the Church and buy drink for drink with him delivered from the bar by the waiter (Can't remember his name). In those days a pint of mixed (can't think why). George Broster? was the landlord in 1966/67? Some nights 6 or 7 pints which you can do when you are young and I only had to walk through the church yard and Prestwich Clough to St Anne's Road and home. I have joined this thread because I have just listened to Neil Young on U Tube singing 4 Strong Winds which is very powerful with many guitarists and singers and which was one of Georges favourite songs in the Church.

Brian Moss used to play at our college folk club in the Cross Keys on Broad Street, Salford, I'm sure he moved to Suffolk, along with Stan Ellison (Black Stan) to do some recording (according to Meic Stevens. He was a fine blues singer and guitarist.

I've remembered the waiter's name which was Alan and I also do remember Barry Oates and him singing and playing Bob Dylan's Williamson Singer which I think was his favourite

Thanks, blindrunkal for your comment about Brian Moss. He was in Aberystwyth University in the early 60s and helped form the Aber Folk Club in the Angel Inn. He shared a class with Prince Charles - not bad for a very left wing guy. He sang a lot of English folk songs as well as blues, and got us some great guests like Harry Boardman, Ewan McColl and Cyril Tawney. I went to visit him in hospital in York, where he lived before he died in the 90s.

I was born in Albion St just off Broughton Rd and Broad St now a big roundabout and our houses demolished years ago and moved to Ruskin Rd off St Anne's Rd when I was 12 and ultimately a Church Inn regular with my own tankard stored behind the bar. George was a great friend then but I moved away after some years worked away on foreign soils and lost touch.

I have had th pleasure of attending this club very recently. Kevin is still at the helm and I love thecway he and thr regulars make visitors feel comfy and welcome. I see they have also started a free guitar workshop, once a month, so skills can be shown and passed on. This is a great idea. Kevin is a great picker and is always happy to pass on the skills he has. Other members do likewise.

It is a great club and certainly one worth visiting. They have Dave Gibb as guest on 31st October I noticed.

I wish it well for the future :-)

            Still interested in all sorts of music but, for a variety of
reasons, no longer playing/performing.
       I very much regret the passing of Frank Duffy and Barry Skinner,
two very good friends from the folk-era.
          Fortunately many old friends survive including Graham Walker and other members of "Redmayne" and Ian cCann, ex. "Orange Blossom Sound".

Of course you are right with the Bob Dylan song. Just downloaded and listened to Nic Jones Penguin Eggs fantastic.
Brother Jon not great at 80. Just had a pacemaker fitted in Blackburn General and will soon move to respite care in Clitheroe Hospital. We are living in North Nottinghamshire near Retford having moved here with the job in 1993. Married Cathy Broad back in 76 and lived and worked in Iran and Libya before finally coming home in 1990.

Was given this website by my brother Ken, It makes very interesting reading. How we have all moved on from those days of propping up the bar at the back of the folk club. Drunkenly joining to all the songs, I couldn't sing worth a dam but who cares, I didn't have to listen to me.Great times, great memories and great friends. I wonder what happened to all the girls. There was Joice ? the twins and I can't remember any of the other names, but I miss them all.

Barry Oates - I had no idea that George had passed away. I knew him from several trips to France. This has come as a great shock. A guy I liked and respected a great deal.
