Subject: RE: Otley Festival Sept 2010 From: GUEST,muppett Date: 13 Sep 10 - 08:03 AM There's a new pub opened called the Old cock, near the bus station (used to be a restaurant called the curlew I think)that sells real ale,it's only tiny, but does any one know if they're having any sessions there over the weekend? |
Subject: RE: Otley Festival Sept 2010 From: Soldier boy Date: 13 Sep 10 - 08:54 PM It doesn't matter Muppett me owld mucker. If it is small and cosy and welcoming to a folkie singaround and extra bar takings AND serves real ale then I am sure that we can create our own sessions in there (without stepping on anybody else's toes I hope!) 'The Manor' is a good venue for a singaround but you are always competing with huge background chatter and natter at the bar so a new venue in a quieter backwater might be just the job for a session or two. Worth a try anyway. Nice one Muppett. Good suggestion. So 'The Old Cock' might rise to the occasion after all. Whey hey!! Let's give it a try folks. Chris |

Subject: RE: Otley Festival Sept 2010 From: Shantyfreak Date: 14 Sep 10 - 01:13 PM Looking forward to a great week-end at Otley as usual. Fans of Cicely Fox Smith are well catered for with Charlie Ipcar over from the US singing some of his arrangements of her stuff and me reciting it. CFS Special -- Black Horse -- upstairs -- Saturday afternoon. Jim |
Subject: RE: Otley Festival Sept 2010 From: Charley Noble Date: 14 Sep 10 - 05:29 PM And to add to what Jim has posted about the C. Fox Smith workshop, the time on Saturday is 2:30 pm. I will also be bringing copies of the Sea Songs of Cicely Fox Smith songbook, as well as what's left of my CD's. I don't see any nautical music listed on the schedule. Is there a workshop or session lurking somewhere? Cheerily, Charley Noble, resident in York |
Subject: RE: Otley Festival Sept 2010 From: ossonflags Date: 14 Sep 10 - 05:42 PM See you in Old Cock then Chris and Muppett;when youse gerrin there? |
Subject: RE: Otley Festival Sept 2010 From: Soldier boy Date: 14 Sep 10 - 08:44 PM Friday, ossonflags. See youse there good buddy - about 8.00pm ish I think in the Old Cock. Muppett, when you say it is tiny as a venue, is it smaller than the front room (road side) of The Black Horse in Whitby or a bit bigger/smaller? Some guide to measurements please! How's your spatial awareness at the mo? Chris |
Subject: RE: Otley Festival Sept 2010 From: GUEST,muppett Date: 15 Sep 10 - 05:29 AM Hiya Chris & Mick, Planning on being there around 7ish or as soon as Anne and I have had our tea, which ether is the earlier, as for size of the pub, I've not been in it, but from look of it from the window, I'd say it was on a par with the Black Horse at Whitby, though there does seem to be an upstairs as well. Any road probally start at the manor and maybe a few of us could try it out. |
Subject: RE: Otley Festival Sept 2010 From: Brian Peters Date: 15 Sep 10 - 05:43 AM Not listed on the website is my concertina workshop at 1130 in the Old Cock (venue change from Black Horse). Judging by previous years, it's usually a mixed group with a lot of English system players, so I will be concentrating on repertoire and part-playing, although willing to set aside time for anglo technique if demand's there. Charley Noble wrote: "I don't see any nautical music listed on the schedule. Is there a workshop or session lurking somewhere?" More than a few maritime songs in my repertoire, Charley. Come and say hello. |
Subject: RE: Otley Festival Sept 2010 From: Charley Noble Date: 15 Sep 10 - 05:59 PM Thanks, Brian. I'll certainly be attending your workshop. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Otley Festival Sept 2010 From: Charley Noble Date: 17 Sep 10 - 02:01 PM Alert! Alert! Jim informed me this morning (Friday) that the venue for our C. Fox Smith Workshop on Saturday, 2:30 pm, has closed down. Ugh! Evidently The Black Horse has gone out to pasture. So check at the Festival Office and see where we are to re-assemble. Life is exciting but I have hopes that everything will be sorted before we pull into the car park. Brian- Judy and I are Mystic Sea Music Festival regulars. So we have definitely heard you perform but there is no special reason why we would be remembered by you. heerily, Charley Noble in Kent |
Subject: RE: Otley Festival Sept 2010 From: Mrs.Duck Date: 18 Sep 10 - 06:03 AM We're on our way up for the day so hope to catch a few in the Manor and other places. |
Subject: RE: Otley Festival Sept 2010 From: Mrs.Duck Date: 18 Sep 10 - 02:33 PM Just back. Seemed very quiet but we did manage to catch up with one or two folk. Didn't manage to meet Charley again but found ourselves at far end of town. The lack of cafe and craft fayre at the civic hall was a shame as it did used to be a meeting point. Couldn't go into the Old Cock as it is strictly no under 18s but there wasn't any music in there as we went past anyway. Good sing with Mick and co in the Cross Pipes :) |
Subject: RE: Otley Festival Sept 2010 From: Lady Nancy Date: 18 Sep 10 - 04:36 PM Had a very pleasant Friday evening in the Red Lion. Today (Saturday) a wonderful singaround with INPO etc. upstairs in the Red Lion. Impromptu sessions were thin on the ground - usual Irish in the Mucky Duck - so we started our own. Lovely couple of days, but don't think the voice and fiddle fingers will stand a re-visit on Sunday. Will have to see. As always, it's a lovely place to catch up with friends and make new ones...... LN |
Subject: RE: Otley Festival Sept 2010 From: GUEST,Betsy Date: 19 Sep 10 - 05:42 AM I went on Saturday -it's a pity Otley doesn't have more than one Bed and Breakfast which was naturally full , or we would definitely stayed . Nice sesh with Mick and Mary in Cross pipes but the famous Black Sheep went "off" which was a major irritant for me. Never mind,a friendly and warm gathering as all the venues are very close to each other, and I was amazed to see the huge amount of fish shops for an inland location. The ones we sampled were delicious albeit Haddock and not our usual Cod !!!. They will assured of a good day on Sunday with Mr Garbutt still to come. |
Subject: RE: Otley Festival Sept 2010 From: MoorleyMan Date: 19 Sep 10 - 01:46 PM You were lucky Betsy - I wandered round the various pubs for well over an hour Sat early evening trying to find some decent singing and had to give up in the end. Cross Pipes and Fleece were prob the only places I didn't try (typical). Missed seeing you Ossonflags, hope to catch up soon. |
Subject: RE: Otley Festival Sept 2010 From: Charley Noble Date: 19 Sep 10 - 01:54 PM I didn't get to attend the whole Festival but had a great deal of fun on Saturday and Sunday. The two hour sea music session on Sunday was quite good. Robin opened up and was followed by Monkey Fist, and then various singers were invited to lead a song. I think everyone was pleased, and grateful to be inside out of the rain. We did find a location at Korks for our C. Fox Smith workshop on Saturday. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Otley Festival Sept 2010 From: BusyBee Paul Date: 19 Sep 10 - 03:59 PM Another fantastic weekend - thanks Mr Fairholme and team. |
Subject: RE: Otley Festival Sept 2010 From: Soldier boy Date: 19 Sep 10 - 09:16 PM Another great weekend. Thoroughly enjoyed it and many thanks to all the organisers. It was quieter than in previous years but I have found that at every festival I have been to this year. Fact is that people are watching their pennies in the current economic climate and are cutting back on the number of festivals they are going to. That's life at the moment and we have to accept it and live with it. Being a true numpty I left my day pack with my song book and stuff in a portaloo on the campsite in the early hours of Saturday morning but a lovely lady retrieved it and handed it in to the stewards tent. Thank you very much kind lady. |
Subject: RE: Otley Festival Sept 2010 From: Shantyfreak Date: 20 Sep 10 - 07:49 AM Great fun this year at Otley as usual. Sing-a-rounds were fewer on the ground but those I managed to get to were well up to scratch. Some good programmed stuff as well. Otley does well with artistes at all levels from Vin G and Les B down the scale. Definetely something for everyone (apart from the Civic Hall!!) If I ignored anyone in my dashing around I apologise and Blame the rain on my glesses. Jim |
Subject: RE: Otley Festival Sept 2010 From: Aeola Date: 20 Sep 10 - 05:23 PM Great w/e, no session in cross pipes on sat evening, somebodies 60th !!Good one in the red lion though!! |
Subject: RE: Otley Festival Sept 2010 From: Sir Roger de Beverley Date: 21 Sep 10 - 05:30 PM I only got across for about four hours on Sunday but it was great to catch up with old friends Ossonflags, Del boy (and respective partners) and Dave and Zoe Bottomley in the Bay horse. R |
Subject: RE: Otley Festival Sept 2010 From: GUEST,muppett Date: 22 Sep 10 - 04:48 AM Another grand festival, though not as busy as it has been in the past, but well done to all involved in the organising of it. So the circus hits the road now and stops at Ingleton in less then a fortnight, see you all there. |
Subject: RE: Otley Festival Sept 2010 From: BusyBee Paul Date: 22 Sep 10 - 05:09 PM I'd best get my elephant serviced ready for the Ingleton trip. Come on Aggy! |
