After a brilliant Frank Harte Festival, which a lot of us are still recovering from, this is a well timed event for those suffering withdrawal systems. I am looking forward to Con Fada O Driscoll, a man we all look up to,(we have no choice!) and all the other stars listed. Don't be distracted by the title being in Irish. There will be lots of songs sung in english ,or even in dublinese, for those who don't have the Gaeilge. A very minor complaint last year was that the meal laid on by the hotel was so good that singers felt rather stuffed when the concert commenced. Hopefully a bit of breathing space will be allowed this year. If you don't know where it is, its
"Down by Miltown Malbay, not a hundred miles from Galway"
Hope to see you all there

It sounds like a wonderful weekend in prospect but I'd really have to question this piece of scheduling:-

8.45 p.m. Writing Songs In The Traditional Idiom by Con Ó Drisceóil and Sean Mone

9.30 p.m. Informal Singing Session hosted by Annette Munnelly

Do you seriously expect that if you put the two finest traditional song writers in the Universe, as well as in Ireland, together on stage they'll have even got started after 45 minutes - or that anyone would want them to stop after such a short time?

Have a great weekend! Wish I could be there!

Matthew

Matthew, We'll ask the lads to be as concise as possible, and knowing them they'll get a huge amount into the time allotted. Remember this event is taking place in West Clare, have you ever heard about "West Clare Time". When God made time he made plenty of it!

Er, have you told Stephen Hawking about "West Clare Time"?

My father used to tell the story of how the Professor of Irish at Trinity was asked if the Irish language had an equivalent for the Spanish concept of mañana; the professor considered this for a while and then replied "Well, yes; but the expression isn't quite so...urgent."

The professor must have been from Clare.

This festival, known in English as "The Clare Festival of Traditional Singing" is run in honour of Tom Munnelly, my late husband and founder Chairman. There is a lovely inclusive feel about the proceedings, and the artists are chosen on a geographical, gender and Irish/English language basis. One of the great things about being involved in running this festival is that people who have been before come back again, and everyone gets a chance to sing at least once and more if they wish. This year is the first one to have a group on the concert, and The Four Star Trio from Cork, being Con Fada Ó Drisceoil, Pat "Herring" Ahearn and Johnny McCarthy will be a great addition. Looking forward to seeing old friends and to making a lot of new ones.

Annette
