Subject: RE: Jon Bartlett's Heart Attack From: Art Thieme Date: 10 Oct 10 - 02:30 PM John and Rika, It's great that it went well---to say the least! As I've heard tell, "The Way to a man's heart, is to cut his breast bone in half..." :-) After the fact, that's just a small joke. Be well; both of you. -- I treasure the CDs I have of your music. Subject: RE: Jon Bartlett's Heart Attack From: Deckman Date: 10 Oct 10 - 03:26 PM Best wishes Jon ... I suppose you did this re-model job WITHOUT a re-modeling permitt? CHEERS, Bob(deckman)Nelson |
Subject: RE: Jon Bartlett's Heart Attack From: Charley Noble Date: 10 Oct 10 - 04:23 PM Rika- Thanks for taking the trouble to post this news. Many of us nautical singers are very fond of your singing and had no idea that Jon had a health problem. We certainly wish him well in his recovery and I hope he follows his doctor's advice very closely. My father had a heart attack when he was 60. He did make some changes and lived till he was 98, a mere 38 years but it's worth keeping in mind. However, he didn't give up bourbon! Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Jon Bartlett's Heart Attack From: Eric Armstrong Date: 10 Oct 10 - 09:58 PM Hi Everyone Betty & I visited John in hospital today and are delighted to report that he is making an excellent recovery. despite sporting a row of staples up his chest that very much resembles a biker's leather jacket, he is in good spirits and looking forward to going home on Tuesday. True to his indomitable spirit he is intending to take part in a rehearsal of "Under Milkwood" on Wednesday He concedes that he will be seated to do it! Oh! and he firmly intends to change his lifestyle...... in future he will walk to the Bacon sandwich shop ( sorry Rika) Eric & Betty |

Subject: RE: Jon Bartlett's Heart Attack From: Chris Corrigan Date: 11 Oct 10 - 09:07 PM Rika, Eric and Betty, thanks for the updates. That must have been monumental surgery given the size of Jon's heart, and how full it is with life, passion and mirth. Thinking fondly of you guys in Princeton...been listening a lot to the Princeton CD lately and the VFSS Shanty CD too and looking forward to the next time we can belt out the musical landscape of BC together again at Princeton or perhaps sooner, on Bowen Island. |

Subject: RE: Jon Bartlett's Heart Attack (Oct 2010) From: Anglo Date: 12 Oct 10 - 03:45 AM Just came across this thread, and had no idea. Good wishes, John. As one who has had the staples up the chest, I do know how you must be feeling. A lot of people jump back faster than I could. But you do get back. Welcome to life! John |
Subject: RE: Jon Bartlett's Heart Attack (Oct 2010) From: Charley Noble Date: 12 Oct 10 - 07:59 AM "Oh! and he firmly intends to change his lifestyle...... in future he will walk to the Bacon sandwich shop" I do hope that Jon's doctors provide reasonable feedback on what brought about this unwelcome event. I'm sure that Jon will give their recommendations his full attention. There's nothing like a heart attack and an operation like this one to provide such focus. Unfortunately, some of our favorite people never get that second chance. Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Jon Bartlett's Heart Attack (Oct 2010-Canada) From: Jon Bartlett Date: 13 Oct 10 - 02:42 AM My love to you all. I'm home and as fit as one can be after being hit by an 18-wheeler (metaphor? simile?). It's not true what Eric & Betty Armstrong said. I told them I'm going to OPEN a bacon sandwich shop to cut down the stressful travelling. God bless Medicare. I went into Princeton General after a neck pain didn't go away all night. They did the protein test and I failed it miserably. They ambulanced me to Kelowna General (1 1/2 hrs away) where I got the worst angiogram in Christendom. Too many stents were needed and they don't do open heart surgery there. So I was in hospital there for a week waiting for a bed at one of the Lower Mainland hospitals. They flew me down to the New Westminster Hospital Thursday, had my five by-passes done on Friday and thrown out today. My US friends - what would that have cost me in the US? Rika and I are looking forward to 20 more years of the work we love and will take great pleasure in seeing you all again, either here at the Princeton Traditional Music Festival (19-21 August 2011 hint hint) or in your neck of the woods. Jon "Lucky" Bartlett |
Subject: RE: Jon Bartlett's Heart Attack (Oct 2010-Canada) From: lisa null Date: 13 Oct 10 - 11:13 PM `Hey Jon: What a harrowing story though with a happy ending. With the medical problems you and your family have gone through this year, you'd be in bankruptcy court down here in the US. Yes, you and Rikka have a century more of collecting and producing and singing and keeping us royally entertained with songs, stories, and merriment. So take care of yourself for our sakes as well as your own, whatever that entails. Don;t become too ascetic though--- not good for the heart either! Charlie and I wear our Princeton hats all over the place. Hold the summer memories closer somehow, |
Subject: RE: Jon Bartlett's Heart Attack (Oct 2010-Canada) From: iancarterb Date: 13 Oct 10 - 11:19 PM For many of your US friends the cost would have been their life. I'm so glad you were home when this happened. I hope you can be vertical long enough by spring for you and Rika to come back to Seattle Folklife in May. Take good care. Carter Bannerman |
Subject: RE: Jon Bartlett's Heart Attack (Oct 2010-Canada) From: Jon Bartlett Date: 14 Oct 10 - 02:01 AM Thanks, Lisa. No chance of asceticism from this boy! I gave the impression in my post that the whole thing was entirely free - not so. The parking fees Rika had to pay at the hospital ($4/hr) are scandalously high. And I've just purchased all the drugs I'm going to need - nearly $85! Yes, Carter, we'll certainly see you at Folklife Jon Bartlett |

Subject: RE: Jon Bartlett's Heart Attack (Oct 2010-Canada) From: radriano Date: 18 Oct 10 - 04:44 PM Hi Rika and Jon, I don't get to go on Mudcat that often these days and I just saw this thread. I'm glad all went well with the surgery! I had a silent heart attack a couple of years ago and was lucky to have ended up in the hospital the very next day for an unrelated matter. After giving me a blood test they exclaimed, "The abdominal pain is a kidney stone but it seems you've had a heart trauma as well." They put a stent in two days later - seems I had a collapsed artery. Cheers, Richard Adrianowicz |
