Hi, I am looking for the lyrics and chords to "Canadian Whiskey" performed by Nanci Griffith on Other Voices Too, written by Tom Russell. I'm a new guitarist, one year under my belt, and I'm not terribly proficient at figuring out the chords yet. I'm getting better though. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Hummingbird

email: wardfive@sover.net or hummingbird33@yahoo.com

Thank so much.

"Summer's Wages" from that album would be nice too. Ian Tyson. Doesn't seem to be on roughstock.com/cowpie/ (nor is Canadian Whiskey).
yours, Peter T.

click here for lots of Nanci Griffith lyrics, but not the lyrics from "Other Voices, Too." I'm still looking. If I can't find 'em, I'll transcribe the songs myself.

CANADIAN WHISKEY
(words and music by Tom Russell)
©1984, Frontera Music (ASCAP)

In the hills of Montana
There's a timber wolf howlin'
The rangers are prowlin'
For a woman alone
She'd run away from an Indian lover
He'll never recover
She turned him to stone
Chorus:
She drank Canadian whiskey
Pure blended whiskey
She drank it like wine
her eyes were the color of Canadian whiskey
Pure blended whiskey
So light brown and fine
Twenty years later
I heard of a woman
She's living alone
Up by Yellowstone Creek
And old Trapper John
Brings her cases of whiskey
Canadian whiskey
He says she never will speak

(Chorus twice)

Sorry - can't do chords.

SUMMER WAGES
(words and music by Ian tyson)
©1965, Slick Fork Music (SOCAN)

Never hit seventeen
When you play against the dealer
You know that the odds
Won't ride with you
And never leave your woman alone
With your friends around to steal her
She'll be gambled and gone
Like summer wages

And we'll keep rollin' on
'til we get to Vancouver
And the woman that I love
She's living there
It's been six long months
And more since I've seen her
Years have gambled and gone
Like summer wages.
Chorus:
In all the beer parlors
All down along Main Street
The dreams of the seasons
Get all spilled down on the floor
All the big stands of timber
Just waiting for the falling
And the hookers standing watchfully
Waiting by the door.
So I'll work on the towboats
With my slippery city shoes
Which Lord I swore I would never do again
Through the gray fog-bound straits
Where the cedars stand watching
I'll be far-off and gone
Like summer wages

Chorus

Never hit seventeen
When you play against the dealer
You know that the odds
Won't ride with you
And never leave your woman alone
With your friends around to steal her
She'll be gambled and gone
Like summer wages

Tag:
And the years are gambled and lost
Like summer wages.

I see that Mudcat & Cowpie actually had the words. Cowpie and an OLGA site in Poland had the words and chords for it:

Mudcat's words
OLGA Lyric and Chords
Cowpie lyrics and chords

Chords for you

Darn. I dutifully searched Mudcat, Cowpie, and the Web for "Canadian Whiskey," and found nothing except a couple of distillery Websites. As long as I was already typing from that Nanci Griffith CD, I just kept typing, and neglected to search for "Summer Wages" because I thought it wasn't as well-known. Glad you caught it, George. Now, can anybody come up with chords to "Canadian Whiskey"? Both songs are real classics, aren't they?

Yes, they sure seem to be. I'll ask and see if one or another of the local guitar players can come up with something on that one.

Is there a tune resemblance between "Canadian Whiskey" and "For All the Good People"? Every time I attempted to learn Canadian Whiskey, The Good People song kept chyming in. Anyone else hear the simularities?
