Subject: Maine Farm Ceilidh- WE BOUGHT THE FARM! From: GUEST,Cuilionn Date: 12 Oct 10 - 07:57 PM Hello, Folks! After three Very Hard Years, (which will provide fodder for many's the epic tragi-comic ballad, I'm sure), I am tapsalteerie with the news that we now officially own our farm. We came so close to losing it, but now--thanks to a USDA loan and a 40-year mortgage--we have put both our names on the deed and can finally sink our roots deep down into this lovely old parcel of land. So... we're having a party! Actually, we're planning to have a LOTS of parties! But you're all invited to the first one: A Celtic New Year / Farm Ownership Celebration At Tir na nOg Farm in Pownal, Maine October 30, 2010 from 6(ish) to 11(ish) PM Bring: beverages of choice, potluck yummy things, acoustic instruments and tunes/poems/songs of the year's turning and the earth's mysteries. Weather permitting, there will be a bonfire. Come help us celebrate! --Cuilionn |

Subject: RE: Maine Farm Ceilidh- WE BOUGHT THE FARM! From: GUEST,Cuilionn Date: 13 Oct 10 - 08:12 AM Awww, Gargoyle-- I love it when you get all warm and fuzzy like that. Aye, we're completely okay with the indentured servitude thing, because--without going into the actual ugliness of the situation overmuch--it really was the only option available to us. The interest rate is very low and the payments are manageable. Besides, a fair number of my ancestors came to this country as indentured servants, so I'm just keeping up a family tradition! --Cuilionn |

Subject: RE: Maine Farm Ceilidh- WE BOUGHT THE FARM! From: Charley Noble Date: 15 Oct 10 - 08:33 AM Congratulations! Pownal seems a great place to live. Some lovely old homes and country setting. It's probably under pressure from development as a bedroom community to larger more urban areas. But the town officials, from the outside, appear relatively sane. Unfortunately, on October 30 I'll be performing with Roll & Go at the Maine Maritime Museum Annual Pirate Party in Bath. Arrggghh! Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Maine Farm Ceilidh- WE BOUGHT THE FARM! From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 15 Oct 10 - 01:33 PM Congratulations! Sadly, I, too, have a gig that day in the lovely Monadnock region of NH. But as one indentured servant to another, I'll sing one for you! |
Subject: RE: Maine Farm Ceilidh- WE BOUGHT THE FARM! From: Pibydd Date: 15 Oct 10 - 01:49 PM I've no connection with this at all, apart from curiosity upon seeing this thread. Congratulations and felicitaions from Wales on getting this done! If I was on the other side of the Atlantic I'd be very tempted! |
Subject: RE: Maine Farm Ceilidh- WE BOUGHT THE FARM! From: GUEST,Uncle Jaque Date: 15 Oct 10 - 06:20 PM Ahoy again! 'Tis been a while, eh? About 5 years ago we removed from Yarmouth up heah to Monmouth, and just love it. It was getting entirely too civilized down there. Had just taken the 5-string Vega down off the wall and noodled around with what might be the unofficial Maine State Song by Steven Foster; "Hard Times Come Again No More", and got a little nostalgic for our old Folkie Buds - so thought we'd better check back in for old time's sake. Lordy!; I would love to pop down and join in, but our Grand Daughters are celebrating their Birthdays (2 and 4)on the 30th that day, and that's a party that sort of has priority. Their birthdays are about 5 days apart so we're consolidating. We do have a couple of Friends down that way, one of whom has been to a couple of our Sea Chanty hoots down t' Putland years past, and might be interested; I'll drop her an e mail. Have a ball all, and congrats on the farm. No doubt that will keep you wikkid busy and out of mischief for a while. {;^{)~ |

Subject: RE: Maine Farm Ceilidh- WE BOUGHT THE FARM! From: GUEST,Cuilionn Date: 19 Oct 10 - 07:55 PM Re: Uncle Jaque: "noodled around with what might be the unofficial Maine State Song by Steven Foster; "Hard Times Come Again No More"... Oh, that song's been sung far too many times in our house, and I can still sing it with fervor-- especially since last Monday, when our only good winter commuting car threw a rod and the mechanic estimates $4,500 to fix it. So...I want as many folkies as possible to show up on October 30th, because we've completely forgotten how to relax, celebrate life, and have a good time, and we need some LESSONS!!! Thanks in advance! --Cuilionn |

From: Crowhugger Date: 20 Oct 10 - 04:23 AM Oops, my clicking finger was a bit jumpy--just to add that although it's ordinarily too far from Toronto area, Maine is a place I'll get to sooner or later, it's where my paternal granddad hailed from (Millinocket). |

Subject: RE: Maine Farm Ceilidh Oct 30- WE BOUGHT THE FARM! From: SINSULL Date: 31 Oct 10 - 05:14 PM We had a lovely time. Incredible amounts of fresh meat - LOL. We knew we were among farmers. A beautiful moussaka (SP?) and an apple pie cheesecake to die for. There were stories of hauntings and semi-hauntings. Songs of murder and mayhem and pipes, lots of pipes. The farm is warm and welcoming. The table has to be seen to be appreciated - panels of stained glass at each end. Thank you ladies. It was a warm and wonderful evening, a packed house and a suitable "first night" for your new home. Mary PS I really did like throwing the ball for the puppy. M |
Subject: RE: Maine Farm Ceilidh Oct 30- We Bought the Farm!! From: SINSULL Date: 01 Nov 10 - 08:50 AM I have been asked to point out that the pipes were played, not smoked. SHEESH. |
Subject: RE: Maine Farm Ceilidh Oct 30- We Bought the Farm!! From: kendall Date: 01 Nov 10 - 07:37 PM I could have sworn I posted to this thread already but I don't see it. It was a nice evening with plenty of good food and good company. It's always a bit sad for me that I am unable to sing at all, but I can listen. I'd never heard that song about the witches that Holly did, that was some piece! How do you remember that? I also enjoyed the pipes, and, well, the whole thing was very nice. Thanks for the invitation. |
Subject: RE: Maine Farm Ceilidh Oct 30- We Bought the Farm!! From: jacqui.c Date: 02 Nov 10 - 03:24 PM Coming in late - life suddenly got busy again. I loved the evening - the music was wonderful and the food was delicious - last year's piglet was excellent as were the smoked ribs. Very good company and a delightful dog - Chloe- made the evening close to perfect. Thanks so much for the invite! |
Subject: RE: Maine Farm Ceilidh Oct 30- We Bought the Farm!! From: Cuilionn Date: 03 Nov 10 - 10:32 PM Aye, life DOES get busy-- I meant to thank you all much earlier for being a part of our celebration. Your music, stories, jokes--and, Zoe the dog would like to add, your wonderful attention to ball-throwing--and general camaraderie were an important contribution to the warming and waking up of our wee house's soul. Kendall-- I understand somewhat the ache of not singing, but we're so thankful for what you DID share. (That story of the house where the pennies rolled out of the wall...mercy!) More ceilidhs to come... thanks again to all who attended the first one we've hosted as farm-owners! --Cuilionn (and Sumac, the Piper!) |
