Subject: Folk Singers who Have Died
From: GUEST,Guest - Lindy
Date: 17 Oct 10 - 02:10 AM

I'm trying to come up with a list of well known or fairly well known folk singers that I can think of who have passed away. For the purpose of this thread I am only looking for artists who were primarily involved with folk or considered a folk singer although they may have played other music during their career.

1). Sandy Denny
2). Tim Hart
3). Jim Croce
4). Kate Wolf
5). Mary Travers (of Peter, Paul & Mary)
6). Stan Rogers
7). Mimi Farina-Baez (Joan Baez's younger sister)
8). John Denver
9). Dan Fogelberg
10).Odetta
11).Kate McGarrigle
12).Eva Cassidy
13).John Martyn
14).John Stewart
15).Harry Chapin

These are 15 names that came to mind right away but I know there are more folkies that have left us.

You missed Mimi Baez's husband - Richard Farina.
This year, people I have counted as friends:
Alistair Hulett - Scotland
Theresa Tooley - England
Joan Prior - Wellington NZ
Jim Delahunty - Wellington NZ

All folkies, all sadly missed.

What is Mr Smith doing killing off Pete Seeger [note spelling], please?

Amos's question is of course a most pertinent one. Dealing only with people I have met, let's take as an example Harry Cox. If he wasn't dead, he would be 125 years old. Peter Bellamy, on the other hand, would only be 66, Sandy Denny 63, &c. But Alex Campbell 85. So where did OP envisage the parameters being set?

Has Isla Cameron been mentioned? Or Dominic Behan?

Pete Seeger (note spelling) is still alive, but my mate Pete Seegar died a few years ago. We had a big funeral, at which Mary Mcalpine sang 'My Love Is Like A Red Red Nose'.

It was profoundly moving.

Some more sad losses:
Derek Moffat (of the McCalmans, just now calling it a day)
Tony Cuffe (Jock Tamson's Bairns)
Davy Steele (quite a few Scottish bands)
Liz Cruickshank, Edinburgh
Anselm Noffke (of Germany's Liederjan, who are celebrating 35 years on 24 October, with one founder member still with them)

I will soon think of many more, but Johnny Collins and Don Partridge come to mind immediately. To me, both were the heart and soul of folk music in very different ways. I am sure Tony Rose must have been mentioned by someone, although I missed it. Bill Price also comes to mind.
