I have just read in the Isle of Wight (UK) County Press that former Island singer, hunourist and politician Lauri Say has died. Many Islanders, like myself, will remember Lauri from the 1960s and 1970s for his wonderful and often hilarious songs - many about the Isle of Wight. They are still popular and sung today. That's a great shame. Here's his obit in the IOW County Press.

It says of his songs written in the 60s, ironically, some of the lyrics are still topical today.

Doesn't say where he originated from - pity, it's an unusual surname, which I share with him.

Did anybody know his family at all?

Probably not my line or branches if he's the London branch.

There are 3 main groups, Somerset (I can go back 8 generations to Trowbridge weavers): London (they were the wealthy Say clan): and Norfolk / Yorkshire.

I'm Julia Say in real life, and my S.O. is a lineal male descendant from ag. labs in Somerset and before that, weavers.

I'm fairly easy to find online if there could be a connection

Are you still on the Island Guest? Folk is still going strong although not at the Sloop these days. Of course Laurie Say's songs are still being sung and enjoyed.

Sorry to dive in on a private situation. I remember attending a camping weekend in the New Forest where (if it wasn't Laurie and his friends) someone was singing these songs and I was thoroughly enjoying them. I would love to youtube them to play to my kids - are there versions out in the ether anywhere?

Wonders of the Internet .. would never have known about or been able to pass on to others the news of Lauri's death. Nor would I have been alerted to the fact those great songs are available on Youtube.

You cannot know how much help it is to hear people talking about my dad and his songs. His whole life was wrapped in music - turning on the radio now, regardless of the station, will quickly find some song I remember him playing during my childhood. Haven't braved his own songs recently, memories are so bright (:

I am still singing some of his songs and have tried to find the words to some of the others without success.
He and Keith were my first introduction to folk music in Rookley and later in Newport. When I went to Uni in london and travelled round the clubs there I always expected one day to hear his voice booming out but, sadly, that wasn't to be.
He inspired me to start singing. Thanks Lauri

I have 7" EP of Songs For Singing Islanders which I recently uploaded to my computer for my mum, so can have digital copy. It has 4 songs on: The Southern Vectis Song, U.D.I. For I.O.W. The Isle of Wight For Me and The Hovercraft on. My Mum let me have this record when I was a kid living in Nottinghamshire. We moved to the Island in 1985. Phil H Not sure if it is still in existence or not, but there was a site isleofwightmusic.com that had Lauri Say's songs on it, with midi.
Saddly I have never heard any of the Isle of Wight folkies, sing any of these great songs.Anything you do to preserve and promote has to be good.Allan

I am a bit late catching up but I have just read about Lauri after finding the SV Bus Song whilst browsing YouTube just now. I remember starting the IW folk club in the Castle Inn in Newport along with Cliff Maidment, big Tom Taylor and some others - not sure if Lauri was one of them at that stage. But we got to know each other well after that and were at the IW 1970 festival working together. I'm at [e-mail] if anyone remembers me.
