Art's giving us pickers a lesson on how it is done for sure. For me this is Art at his very best. There is no song he doesn't do well but this one for me hits right in the soul

Sandra, thanks, I thought I was losing it for a minute there! I know I've listened to his Old Dog Blue, so I am going to have to go check all of my Art Thieme, of which I *thought* had everything and make double sure I am not losing it.:-)

Thanks, Dan!

Art didn't like the bass on a 12 string Martin so he drilled holes in his 6 string Martin and made a 9 string !! Holy Cow

He is singing the song, a live performance, keeping the bass line for his time and not missing a note, then he lets the highs of his 9 string guitar sing the melody along with him vocally and again not missing a note. Amazing work fella

I play a lot of Appalachian music (my roots) it is fast, the picking can be complex with a lot of change ups and rolls, but sometime the picking on a simple melody can be far more challenging to get right. Art just gave a lesson on how it should be done to this picker

Interesting guitar sound - sounds a bit like a delay pedal, or light phase. I notice in the picture he has two pick shields - one each side of the sound hole. presumably for Richie Havens style attack. Was he using a pick there between thumb and index, and then his fingers?

Not sure why the bloke in the song didn't want to be buried on the prairie. You'd biodegrade like smoke out there.

He finger picks only, metal picks, never flat picked in his life

Oh! I would LOVE to have Art's "Live at Winfield" CD. We attend the Winfield Music Fest every year, but Art hasn't played there in many years, so I've never heard him live--He's still a legend at Winfield, of course. Art, we miss you.

Any suggestions where I might buy a copy? Does Camsco have it?

Thanks,
Lin

Lin and all---first, Dan!
Thanks for putting this song up here. My version of "Bury Me Not On The Lone Prairie" was included on a cassette issued by an NPR radio show in Ohio--I don't recall the city. It was recorded by them at a concert I did in the area. The host of the program that put that cassette together was Bill Munger. --- I took that track and included it on a bootleg self-made two CD package I put together on my computer called Art Thieme--the Westering Songs. It was all western and cowboy songs from tapes of live shows, and LPs and CDs of mine over the years.

Well, I do guess I must've sent that set to Dan OldDude somewhere along the way. If anyone has it from me, feel free to copy it to send to anyone you know who might enjoy it. I've no idea who I sent it to as my recent memory and other stuff has been messed up big time by my MS.

As with my photos on line, all I care about it passing on some of what I was able to do; just to say thank you to the folk world that gave me a home for so long. I don't want pay for any of that as I must stay broke so Medicaid here in our state will pay for Carol's medications. --- Such is life without a single-payer aspect of the Healthcare legislation. ---- A.T.

Art has a penetrating and relaxed powerful voice.

His bass voice has that special cutting edge which gives the words the clarity of a tenor.

About the time that song was taped during my show, I was dealing with putting a dear aunt into a nursing home. It was all that could be done at the time. She did NOT want to be there at all. But we could not do anything else. So, we told her what she wanted to hear, and eventually got her in there. The first week she decked a nurse with a right cross. The home said she was being tossed out and they pretty much put her on the sidewalk. We drove 300 miles in the middle of the night to find her another nursing home---a much better fit. --- Eventually, she let us know how she had come to see it was the best place for her with all her medical needs.

THAT is why "Bury Me Not On The Lone Prairie" became important to me. We told my Aunt, my mother's twin, what she wanted to hear. Then we did what we practically had to do.------The cowboys told their friend they'd not bury him out there, but THEN
they did the only thing they could--they buried him there; then took his horse and his rope and his boots.

Lin,
That recording of mine "Art Thieme--Live In Winfield" was a cassette that the Walnut Valley Association put out as a benefit for us when I spent a decade--the 1990s--having four spinal surgeries for many symptoms that, in 1997, finally turned out to actually be Multiple Sclerosis. (Mayo Clinic diagnosed it right!)

Anyhow, I did put that cassette onto a home-made bootleg CD and sent it to some people. E-mail me or whatever.

The recording was made on the old Stage #3 in 1984. Bob Redford was behind it--and I heartily thank him and Bobby Pangle and everyone for doing that. The production was done by our old friend Cathy Fink.

Thanks for more info on the recordings, Art. Rog and I are both thrilled to learn of the Westering CDs and the Winfield one, too. I honestly don't think there is anyone whom we'd rather listen to than you on a regular basis. As I've often said you are Fine Art and we are lucky to have you among us and so generous, too.

As to staying broke...there oughta be a law!

All of our love to you and Carol,

kat & Rog

Art, you are a treasure AND a sweetheart. I've PM'd you with my email addy and would really enjoy hearing from you.

Stage 3 is located in the same place, I believe, but has been rebuilt and has a much better roof over it for the performers' benefit. Still open seating for the audience, as is Stage 2. And still a fantastic amount of wonderful music being played everywhere.

Wish I could have heard you there and then.

Lin
