Hello. I'm a band director in VA. For a twist in our marching band show this year, we have a talented student playing banjo for a short section in the show. This student is also playing electric bass for the rest of the show. I'm trying to find a stand on which to mount a banjo that can be played during live performance. If anyone can tell me how to build one I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance for your time and consideration.

I built walk up banjo stand for a professional weight banjo from hardware store standard 1/2 black pipe fittings. I can build you one or send you my parts list..I can send photos of my finished product as well. My dear friend is suffering from the affects of Lyme Disease..and although he can still pick, the weight of his banjo on his shoulder caused problems.

(as I said, my primary reason for searching for Eddie was as a
response to a musician who is working on a way to hold the nyckelharpa despite arthritis problems...)

Eddie is a fantastic and innovative musician. He is also a fine thumbstyle guitarist as well as a notorious flatpicker. He still tours on occasion with the Country Gentlemen although he normally works as a duo with Martha. I talked with Eddie and Martha in May and he had lost a lot of his dexterity in his right hand. That was restored with the brain surgery. Seems like Martha was the one who suggested that he take the banjo into surgery. The banjo stand does enable Eddie to move easily back and forth from banjo to guitar.

I used to see him perform with the Country Gentlemen in the 60's at the Fifth Dimension Coffee House in Montreal. Aside from the great musicianship and singing, I loved the choreography of 3 guys on a postage-stamp stage & a single mike. He would swing his banjo up from below past Charlie Waller's nose when he took his break, amazingly never actually touching him.

Years later i saw him on TV with the banjo-stand, great idea, those things are heavy!

Still have quite a few of their Folkways LPs.

Follow-up: the 'playing banjo in surgery' thing is because that's what the surgeons wanted. The operation was "deep brain stimulation (DBS)," and the patient needs to help the doctors find the exact spot where the treatment will do the most good. In his case, since it was his right hand and tremors that needed correcting, he had to play to let them know what worked and what didn't. He called it 'the most painful thing I ever undured,' but it seems to have been successful.

Eddie Adcock was the banjo player in the Country Gentlemen here in the DC area for many years. A one-of-a-kind for sure. He eventually went his own way (around 1970) and later started a not-totally-strictly-bluegrass band with his wife, Martha. He's been a fixture in Nashville for years, and playing banjo during his own surgery is just what I would expect of him.

The brain opperation was discussed at least two or three years ago. This is one tough hombre.

Eddie Adcock did a record with Don Reno in (I think) 1964 that is still hard to believe. They may be the two finest banjo players ever.

What is less known is that they are both great acoustic guitar flatpickers and deserve to recognised along with their piers Doc Watson, Tony Rice, Norman Blake, Clarence White, Dan Crary and David Grier.

i was just looking up about Eddie Adcock...banjo player...
for a person i saw who is planning to build a stand for a nyckelharpa
i recall #Eddie building a stand so he could have his banjo held up for him.. and so he could change instruments..in the middle and in between songs... and then i found out that he played banjo during his own brain surgery... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjX6ErmKY14

I guess the operation was in March of 2010.
