Subject: RE: Properganda Alternative Advent Calendar From: Joe Offer Date: 22 Dec 10 - 03:36 AM For December 18: Drive the Cold Winter Away, recorded by Johnny Coppin. There's a Mudcat thread here. The melody sounds modern, but I've heard it from a number of sources. Anybody know the source of this melody? For December 19: Merry Christmas from the Family (my request!) For December 19: Merry Christmas from the Family (Simon honored my request! This is my favorite Christmas song.) The song is by Robert Earl Keen, Jr., and there's a Mudcat thread on it here (click). For December 19: Merry Christmas from the Family (my request!) December 20: Clementising AND Down In Yon Woods, recorded by Coope, Boyes & Simpson, with Fi Fraser, Jo Freya and Georgina Boyes. Down In Yon Forrest may or may not have been written by John Jacob Niles. It would be unkind, unwise, and unfair of me to say that "Clementising" shares many elements with the Peter, Paul and Mary song, A-Soalin', so I won't say that.... -Joe- |

Subject: RE: Properganda Alternative Advent Calendar From: Reinhard Date: 12 Dec 10 - 06:39 AM Fotheringay: Winter Winds Winter winds they do blow cold, The time of year, it is chosen. Now the frost and fire, And now the sea is frozen. He who sleeps he does not see The coming of the seasons, The filling of a dream Without a time to reason. When she walked through evil O'er the paths of broken illusions, Carefully now she lives, For she has mended her confusion. |

Subject: RE: Properganda Alternative Advent Calendar From: Phil Edwards Date: 07 Dec 10 - 06:07 AM So it is; another song is sourced to RW's mother. No musical credits to Roger Watson on that album, although he did write the sleevenotes - I guess he was the sixth Druid! |

Subject: RE: Properganda Alternative Advent Calendar From: Phil Edwards Date: 06 Dec 10 - 04:04 AM I can trace this song back another four years, to the Druids' 1970 album Burnt Offering; here's more about the album and here's the track on Youtube. It's about the hunt of a hare by a Nottinghamshire bus driver (the bus is going from Hucknall to Mansfield); despite the woo-ish spirit of the season stuff on Properganda, I think it's more or less a joke song. Presumably it was written by John Adams, as he seems to be the link between the Druids and Muckram Wakes. |
