Subject: R.I.P Dave Hickey McGinty
From: skarpi
Date: 26 Dec 10 - 01:03 PM

Hallo all , I just got an e-mail saying Dave Hickey one of the member of the McGinty from Novia Scotia died .

Hello Everyone,
Dave Hickey passed away yesterday evening December 25, 2010 after a very brief and courageous battle with cancer.
David liked the music loud, his rum dark, his water salty and hockey in Maple Leaf blue.
Christmas was one of his favourite times of the year, so it is perhaps appropriate that he should leave us on this day.

I got to know Dave here in Reykjavík many years ago along with Don , John and Bob, at the Dubliner pub , over the years I med up with them
nearly every time they came here.
McGinty came here to Iceland over a year ago and I coult not go and listen to them ...I wish I had ..but he will be in my memory as many others ...
May god be with all his family and friends .

all the best Skarpi Iceland .

McGinty's the name of the band, Dave's own surname was Hickey -- quite a common one here in Atlantic Canada with its many Irish influences. He was a member of the band for over thirty years, bringing music and laughter to thousands. Bandmates John Ferguson and Don Moore will miss their good friend and musical partner.

Sad news indeed! I did not know that he had been sick. McGinty was always one of my favourites groups whenever I would be in Halifax. The Lower Deck in the old Privateers Warehouse is where the would most often be found. RIP!

It is with great sadness I heard of Dave Hickey's passing. Our history goes back to school days in Halifax and I have warm memories of nights at the old LBR on Spring Garden Road. My wife Helga and I pass on condolences to his family and friends from Northern Newfoundland.

I was truly saddened to hear of Dave's passing. Even if I hadn't seen him and the boys for months, or sometimes years, he would always shout out "Hey Karen!" when he saw me. I remember how he and Donnie and Bob bailed us out at the JL Illsley Winter Prom 1972 when we booked a band for the wrong night and they offered to play for the "angry mob" dressed in their finest.

I'd like to think that he and Tommy Makem are sharing a bottle of something tasty to warm their hearts over on the other side.

He will be missed by so many.

I was working in the shop to-day when a client came by and informed me of Dave's passing. Dave was one of the more memorable people I've had the enjoyment of knowing over the years. I had the opportunity to work on many projects with him and his gentle nature, sense of humour, commitment to his craft and love of family are some of the key things that made him such a nice person to know.
I'm going to miss him, and I send my condolences to his family and those of you who will feel the lose of someone so unique.

I first heard McGinty in the old LBR almost 30 years ago. I was very fortunate to be able to call Dave a close friend. We both shared a love of boating and spent many hours together scrapping, caulking and painting Dave's boat the Sally Brown. Many a trip out of the Armdale Yacht club, down the North West Arm and to where ever the bow may have been pointed that day. Dave would call on occasions when he needed a crew for a charter and off I would go. When it was all said and done there was always time for a Keith's or a sip of rum with CBC Radio playing in the background.
Dave may all the waters you sail on be calm you will sorely missed.

I only had the pleasure of meeting Dave once, when we went to see MGinty play the Triangle in Halifax this last October, I have known John Ferguson for about 5 years and we have become good friends, I am so sad to hear of Daves passing as he and the band made me very welcome.
My wife Bonnie has known the boys for a lot longer and we join everyone who knew Dave in sending our thoughts to his family and close friends
RIP Dave I wish I had been able to get to know you better.

Dave was a great musician and a fine teacher. He taught five of our
family to upholster. He made sure all our projects were complete. The
McGinty tape was a staple on the trip to Cape Breton. He was a kind
and a very talented man. I hope they have Tim Horton's in Heaven.

My Mom just informed me last night of David's passing. (She keeps up with the neighbourhood news when I'm too busy). She and I both have fond memories of "the band" practicing in her basement in Jollimore!(and friend Bob will remember having to go around the cat to get in the house!) Now folks, that was a long time ago - Junior High school times! So music has been his life for a long, long time. In more recent years we have great memories of "nights downtowm" when my sister visits home - the whole family going to hear the band. So glad he had the chance to follow his passion and so sad to hear about the loss of one from our era. My family's thoughts are with his friends and his family at this sad time.

I met Dave for the first time in the summer of 79. While working at various Halifax establishments I always enjoyed when he and the Boys played. Dave always had a smile and something to say. He will be missed.

Huh...somehow missed this thread. I got to see McGinty once several years ago when they played the World Folk Music Association annual benefit concert in DC. It was 2004, the year WFMA did a Stan Rogers tribute, and they were one of the invited representatives of Canadian folk.

That was also the year that Tom Rowe of Schooner Fare passed away between the Friday and Saturday night concerts. McGinty was supposed to have a fairly short set each night, but ended up filling the Romanoffs' slot also so got almost an hour of stage time.

Good stuff. I need to pull out the CDs again.

This Xmas remembering how sad we were last year this time to say goodbye to the talented man we knew and loved. Some of the greatest times of my life were spent listening to him sing with the rest of the boys in the band, working in the same businesses and learning so much about it all. I'll never forget those years in Hfx. The loss of David Richard Hickey was felt way down here in Bear River by not just myself.
Travel above us now, Dave, in your Cape Islander in the sky, and know we all miss and love you.

Joe Breen has been added to fill out the trio, but I havn't seem them perform since. A big set of shoes to fill, but hopefully the music lives on!

I loved seeing McGinty in Halifax. They played at the Lord Nelson and every summer of my tour guiding days 1981-1990 I would try to see them. When my son ws born we took him to Nova Scoria as a wee infant, and had to chase down McGinty before finally catching them in Halifax in 2005 and Sydney (I think) in 2006. Very sorry to read this news even 14 years later in 2024. Fred Runkel, now in Germany
