hi beer to broomers.
dad wrote the song when he was a uni student at melbourne uni in the late 60s. he was a big fan of folk, ppm etc. he entered it in a melbourne writing comp against a field of anti war protest songs. i think it got second place. later, Peter lived and worked in NE Victoria, and had a successful bluegrass band, called buffalo grass. out side his regular career. there was one try hard who attempted to copyright dads song once, dad defended and blocked him in court. and of course it refers to broome NT. it did appear on a record in the early 80s. i will repost if i can find out the name.

Hi there,
I'm trying to get a copy of the bloodwood casette or cd as a gift for my dad who is a huge fan, and when I was a little kid we used to sing along around the campfire, unfortunetly dad's casette got ruined, and I'd really appreciate if anyone can help me out!

my email address is: jessica.garland1@my.jcu.edu.au if anyone is able to help me :)

SUBJECT: BRINGING THE BEER TO BROOME

I normally resist getting involved on the Internet but from the horse's mouth so to speak, here is the original words to 'Bringing the Beer to Broome'.

I wrote the song in 1966 and apart from family and friends the song was first performed at the Melbourne University Song Contest in 1968 and these are the original words.

It was published in an ABC Songbook in the early 70s. Scotty from Bloodwood is quite correct in that Bloodwood recorded this in 1981. Peter McDonald - ex Mulga Bill's Bicycle Band is correct in what he says. He and Mulga Bill's Bicycle Band used to play this song in the 60s and 70s. Hope this is of some help to everyone.

Peter Lenne

BRINGING THE BEER TO BROOME

I'll sing you a tale of a long lost ship
Ch: Bringing the beer to Broome
About it's last and fateful trip
Ch: Bringing the beer to Broome
Well it was sailed by Andy Jones
But never again you'll hear his moans
On the ocean floor he rests his bones
Ch: Bringing the beer to Broome

Ch: Bringing the beer to Broome boys
Bringing the beer to Broome
Andy's ships coming round the point
Bringing the beer to Broome

Now Andy was a sailor
Started on a whaler
Now he's got his very own boat
Does everything to keep it afloat
And the only hand is a drunken goat

Soon he'll try to cross that reef
T'was there he finally came to grief
But his cargos what we all admire
Temperature is getting higher
Throats becoming even drier

Well, the wind arose and blew aloud
The sky was covered thick with cloud
And Andy's boat began to sink
T'was right above the reef I think
And the beer was left for the fish to drink

Now Broome was dry for quite a while
It underwent a heavy trial
But all's well now in Broome you see
The town's now got its own brewery
T'was built in 1923

Now all this happened long ago
Andy's still remembered though
And now in Broome once every year
The sea is thrown a bottle of beer
In case old Andy's ghost is near

If you need some help with the tune, Bloodwood's version followed the original tune as sung but if you really wish to torment yourself, make contact and I will try and help with the original tunes.

Thanks for the interest.

Peter Lenne

The album title was Man Made Music recorded in 1981 and put out by Tanunda Music. It was later included in a double cd called The Bloodwood collection, unfortunately, no longer available. I was the singer of that song with the band.

I have a copy of an old cassette of Bloodwood singing this. My brother bought it on his travels to Australia - probably in the 80's. It has a great collection of songs but I don't know the title

Ross, checkout the "Back to Broome - Ted Egan" thread (just refreshed) for the lyrics to the "What'll we do in Broome" song.

The Roaring Forties (Sydney-based singers of shantys, sea-songs and beyond) have a song called "What'll We Do In Broome?" which supplies a cornucopia of ideas to occupy your time there. I can't find any trace of it on the web or on the CDs/tapes I have. Surprised it hasn't been adopted by the Broome tourist office.

My Dad wrote this song!! Someone else tried to claim it in the 70's so he went ahead and put a copy right on it. The guy who tried to claim it said he wrote it in a certain year but Dad had proof of performing it earlier. Good story!

It's a good, swinging, song and the crowd joins in easily. I do it on occasion at the Seaman's Church Chantey Sing at South Street.

You might also try "Taking You back to Broome."

For the record, the lyrics to 'Bringing The Beer To Broome' were written by Peter Lenne of Myrtleford Victoria in the late 1960's.

Finally an answer from my GOOD buddy, Gary Keep! Hi guys, to all of you I've known for years. Hello to those I don't know yet. As requested by Ricky, here are the words to BRINGING THE BEER TO BROOME. I found this song about 15 years ago on an album I picked up in Perth, Western Australia, titled The Kimberley. The Kimberley is the far northwestern corner of Australia; tropical desert would probably best describe the area. Think southwest desert with lots of termite mounds, boab trees, big lizards and salt water crocodiles. The album was produced by Ted Egan and is primarily songs written by him. BRINGING THE BEER TO BROOME is listed as traditional and performed by a bush band called Bloodwood.

BRINGING THE BEER TO BROOME

I'll sing you a tale of a long lost ship
Ch: Bringing the beer to Broome
About her last and fateful trip
Ch: Bringing the beer to Broome
She was sailed by Andy Jones
Never again you'll hear his groans
On the ocean floor she'll rest her bones
Ch: Bringing the beer to Broome

Ch: Bringing the beer to Broome boys
Bringing the beer to Broome
Andy's ships coming round the point
Bringing the beer to Broome

Now Andy was a sailor
He started on a whaler
Now he's got his very own boat
Does everything to keep her afloat
And the only hand is a drunken goat

Shooting right across that reef
Twas there that Andy came to grief
But his cargos what we all admired
Temperatures are getting higher
Throats are becoming drier

The wind arose and blew aloud
The sky was covered quick with cloud
And Andy's boat began to sink
Right above that reef I think
And the beer was left for the fish to drink

Broome was dry for quite a while
She underwent a heavy trial
But now all's well in Broome you see
Town's got its very own brewery
Built in 1923

Now all this happened long ago
Andy's still remembered though
For now in Broome once every year
To sea is thrown a bottle of beer
In case old Andy's ghost is near

Enjoy,
Gary

p.s. For those of you who know Peter Kasin, I spoke with one of the shipwrights yesterday at Hyde St. Pier. His surgery went well and they found no signs that the cancer had spread. Whew! Good news.

The only version that I've ever heard was sung by Peter McDonald from Melbourne. He recorded it as part of a band known as Mulga Bill's Bicycle Band circa 1972. I have played with Peter a couple of hundred times, but I have inly the vaguest memory of the lyrics. I'll need to do some more digging. Regards, John

There is a sea song called "Bringing the Beer to Broom(?)" about an Australian beer ship. I'm trying to find a recorded version.
