Well, it's just gone midnight - considering that this is a flagship show which can pull in megastars - what so far?

The drummer with Jools band is tasty - thick texture, snappy beats, good timing. I'd have mic'd for a bit more tone and a bit more beater in the kick, and a wholly different snare sound - a smaller tighter snare with more snare-wire in the pickup.

Bass guitar in the band - er - no. Out of tune and no feel for the ethnic music.

Guitarist - is that a 335? The headstock logo looks slightly wrong. A fat strat or similar would have given him a wider tonal palette - better for the reggae.

Wanda Jackson. Oh dear.

Plan B. Oh very dear.

Bellowhead - a positive embarrassment.

Toots Hibbert - a-sodding-mazing given that he had no proper reggae band to back him. Trust me - one year I made my living as a reggae jock (before I was a lawyer).

Ruby Turner - brilliant. Shows what it's about although Jools himself is a pedestrian boogie pianist.

Kylie - how cruel to put her on just after Ruby.

And if ANYONE thinks they can sing Love Letters after Ketty Lester - think again. Mistake.

The Secret Sisters are singing nicely (well, very well if you like country, which I don't).

Oh, and Cee Lo Wossname (who?) has a fine voice if not quite Stevie Wonder or Jackie Wilson, (with tinges of Solomon Burke) but I suspect he ought to have his own band.

Roger Daltrey - oh sad to see the idol's feet of clay. My mate Andy Bright's band (the Chosen Few) do "I'm a Man" so much better.

Oh dear Richard. Not having a good New Year then.
Having worked with Jools and his band many times for his Radio 2 Show, They are all remarkable musicians, especially Gilson on Drums..
As a session drummer, he can command any fee he wants....and a top guy as well.
So, Richard, Happy New Year, but lighten up a bit.

See my PM's Richard - and I tried phoning to wish a Happy New Year - so - Happy New Year. For me Rumer was fabulous, a wonderful mix of Dusty Springfield and Karen Carpenter. Bellowhead were so much better with 'New York Girls' than the previous song and Cee Lo Green was bloody good. The rest were and are mediocre. However, as always, it's personal taste rather than objective and who wants to be a critic anyway.

Don - he used to play with 'Squeeze' who were known for 'Cool for Cats' and 'Up the Junction' amongst other things.

Well, interesting that he started with a pipe band! Up here in Bonnie Scotland we were watching the usual BBC1 diet of Phil Cunningham, Aly Bain, John McCusker, Jackie Bird (newsreader when she's not presenting Hogmanay programmes). We also had Fiddler's Bid, Catriona Mackay, and various younger folk (couldn't hear the Uillean pipes over the massed fiddles, sound man!) Some nice singing from Siobhan Miller too, and the Edinburgh Hogmanay fireworks were quite superb! (Could see them distantly from oor hoose an a')
However if it's anything like last year, the best hogmanay programme will be the one on BBC ALBA (watch it on BBC iPlayer). Hopefully by next year we'll be able to see it on Freeview!

Lang may yer lum reek, frae a very new grannie! (as of 24th December - not yet been shoved aff a bus!)

I liked Roger Daltry singing Mannish Boy.
Though Alison Moyet was pedestrian.
Wanda should have hung up her mike long ago.
Toots was great and enjoyed Plan B. Loved the Secret Sisters but still cant get my head around Bellowhead!! I do think Hootenany is past its sell by date.

it's effing Jools Holland !!!

sooner he is replaced by someone good with natural charisma and real comic timing
and empathy for the superior talent & warm personality presence
of some of strategicly potted-plant positioned rent-a-celeb guests..

..errrm.. like Robbie Williams or any one else but Jools Holland..


highlights were secret sisters and rumour..

definite talents to watch for the near future..

Wanda.. ah bless her.. at least we have the old LPs..

Kylie.. we reckon her squeaky voice might mature into wanda's in the next 30 years..

POP QUEEN kylie..nice to see her caught off guard on her hands and knees tidying up and sticking something [maybe lyrics] on the back of the monitors..

she is a human after all.. we liked that moment.. we warmed to her..

Bellowhead.. we played spot the missing members..

most of the our right/their left hand stage seemed to be missing

Jon Boden looked a bit tired and puffy and seemed more subdued and humble than usual..

that was nice .. again, we warmed to that..

still think the bellows and show off jon, even in depleted condition are the best act in UK today..

except for tom jones and robert plant..

wish theyed been on..

hate all the insincere forced embarisin celeb mates banter..

hate/love all the excruciating public display of minor celeb lovie vain ego power positioning

I truly believe the bass player missed 2 complete beats and repositioned
his left leg as if HE dare to fart on the BBC on our hallowed new year celebration .

Well I liked it. There was nobody I saw on the show that I did not end up feeling more positive about. I'd heard Plan B's second song before, and was not impressed, but I liked the wide range of styles they cover, and their vocalist has a strange but effective sound. Secret Sisters, though a bit dirgy, did a great job on "Walking After Midnight", and BJ Cole's PSG was a delightfully classic accompaniment. Bellowhead were rowdy and fun. I thought it was great to see Kylie (I've never had any time for her music) just performing on her own, working the audience, without the daft dancers. It's always good to see somebody who knows they are on top of their game. Reggae Legends... brilliant! Wanda Jackson, mostly OK. You can remember how she was, all those many years ago. I though Roger Daltrey was amazing- and what a completely unexpected song choice.
C Lo Green and Rumer, I loved. I'm absolutely delighted that there are singers now who take inspiration from the great soul singers. About time too, I say.
All in all, even Jools Holland was ok. Probably because he had not had a bunch of sulky , technically incompetent youths fobbed off on him with the instruction to treat them as "the next big thing".
I enjoyed it.
Somebody needs a remedy for anhedonia!

Taste is a strange thing,here you are mostly running down Jools, who has put together one of the best big bands ever,His accompaniment to all the artists he played for was superb, especially the one with Kylie sitting on the piano.
It would be nice if those people who seek to do critiques based their writing on fault finding rather than an overall view of what was a live performance. Artists knocking their B****cks off to try and give us a good evenings viewing.
Well done !! I shall watch it again next year as usual.

Why oh why is there no alternative to the endless self-indulgence of Jools Holland.

The other channels just seem to give up and leave anyone who fancies a little light entertainment with a choice of two - Jools Holland or switch off.

I rarely listen to the annual Jools Holland Hootenanny any more. I'm not keen on the schmoozing and false jollity - it is, after all, recorded in late autumn - and, though I've seen the JH orchestra live, I'm somehow not moved by them.

It's odd. JH has, as Alan has said, above, put together a very good band with excellent musicians, but - and I can't really say why - neither his own piano playing nor his band stuff gets me rocking.

Some months ago, I was at a village hall in Shropshire, where the main act for the evening was a pianist & singer called Mike Sanchez. I'd seen him a year or two before, playing piano for Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings and was very impressed. He had his own small group - drums, bass, piano, guitar and three horns - at the village hall gig, and blew the place apart. He had huge energy, power, piano and vocal talent and charisma. The place was absolutely rocking - which is what I don't get, somehow, from Jools Holland's outfit. Just a personal opinion.

Thanks for the heads up to watch the Hogmanay ceilidh from South Uist on BBC Alba - must remember to do it next year if I'm reduced to the TV ! (rathering than watching the pitiful offerings from elsewhere - though BBC Scotland didn't do too badly).

I particularly hope that the singing weathergirl at 0:54 makes it to Youtube so she can get a bigger audience.

Loved Secret Sisters, new to me but will be looking out for them. Rumer was good too. Bellowhead were Bellowhead - you either love them or you don't. Has Roger Daltrey's voice dropped a lot? Good eclectic mix, held together with some more or less witty comments from the allegedly comedic audience.

I can't top Roger Daltrey's critique..."Bit of a dry old do innit mate?". That's the whole problem, we need artistes who are as inebriated as their audience.

Anyway, I enjoyed it, especially the Dam Busters March played on the kittens.

Vampire Weekends song 'Holiday' starts 'A holiday, a holiday, and the best one of the year' and has certainly been used on an advert recently although I can't remember what for.
I only saw the post midnight bit of the show but danced around the living room to Bellowhead with Geoff and the twins. We enjoyed it!

I've mentioned above those who struck me one way or another. Vampire Weekend were somewhat less than average.

I remember a couple of years back - it might have been a "Later" rather than a "Hootenannay" - Jools played guitar - a 12-bar-ish thing, and he wasn't bad, but that let out of the cage another pianist who had been I think playing second piano in the Jools band - and that guy was monstrous: totally better than Jools - in the brilliant class. He had the bounce in the boogie.

Definitely a Gibson guitar - same headstock as on my LP Junior. As to whether it's a 335 I don't know. There have been a lot of variations over the years.

I watched it on playback, so I was able to fast forward the really grotty bits.

Overall, and given that it's regarded as mainstream programming, I think there was a fair variety of stuff, and the quality overall was reasonable. But I wish he'd leave out the bloody celebrity waffle.

And we did have the rare and delightful sight of someone playing a melodeon on a mainstream music programme! :) Mustn't grumble!

(Nice to see an appearance from B.J. Cole as well!)

With respect of another thread we enjoyed Vampire Weekend who we caught flicking channels during Father Ted ad-breaks; the Secret Sisters were pretty & cool and Cee Lo Green sang like an angel. Nice to see Rico - and Kylie, bless 'er, though I have to agree with Richard's OP on Wanda Jackson.
