Subject: RE: A.H. Rasmussen Chanties From: Lighter Date: 30 Jan 11 - 07:55 AM Lomax's transcriptions of words in FSNA tend to be, um. inaccurate. There was even some astringent discussion of this in by acadmeic reviewers when the book came out. |
Subject: RE: A.H. Rasmussen Chanties From: shipcmo Date: 29 Jan 11 - 10:05 PM Noting some differences in the Lomax Web recording of Rasmussen's singing of "Santiana", and the version in "Folk Songs of North America", page 54, where it is given as "Santy Anno". Colcord (referenced in "Folk Songs"), gives "Santy Anna". Doerflinger (referenced also), gives "Santy Anna". But Doerflinger does give an "o" version in order to rhyme with Mexico. Even so, that version has the title "Santy Anna". Hugill ("Shanties from the Seven Seas") prefers "Santiana". I'm no Henry Higgins but Albert is singing Santiana as one word, and the ending is definitely "a", rather than "o". Call it Shantyman's perogative. |
Subject: RE: A.H. Rasmussen Chanties From: Gibb Sahib Date: 26 Jan 11 - 05:12 PM Great! It makes me feel vindicated for my slow performances of "Roll the Cotton Down" :D We should all also register the slow tempo of Santiana here. Lots of gems in the archive -- a quick way to access some of the chanties Lomax recorded in the Caribbean. I am starting to think that this song (which I could swear I've heard before?) is the relative of the forgotten chanty refered to by Alden (1882) and Hugill (1961) as "Hilonday": "Island Day" in Tobago However, I don't know if it's title explains "hilonday," or if it is a further mondegreen interpretation of it! |
