Sheffield's newest folk club, the Robber's Dog at the Rutland Arms, Brown Street, has lured one of Mudcat's loyalest footsoldiers, Brian Peters, to its luxurious environs this coming Saturday, 29 January. This is the first of our occasional Fifth Saturday Specials. We normally meet on the second Saturday of the month, but some months have five Saturdays in them, and that seems too good an opportunity to pass over.

We're keeping the Snake Pass open at vast expense so that Brian can make the dash from Glossop with a bumper bundle of ballads, eccentric dance tunes and (it's devoutly to be wished) Rolling Stones covers.

Sheffield – it's closer to you than you think...

I went for a pint after the show to the Rutland. Great selection of beer and cider. The food looked good too.

A roaring night, so it was. Brian P was in tip top form, and contributed a snappy extempore concertina solo in F to my shaky rendering of The Last Time. Tim brought his cello along (every folk club should have a cello) and Kate made a joke that nobody got. Apart from me. Best joke of the night, actually.

We're back again on February 12.

Yes, a splendid night was had by all. Well held together, Raymond!

Hmm, I wonder which Rolling Stones opus will be next to feature on Raymond's set-list... (I won't drop any hint as to my own plans - R is sure to beat me to it!)
And yes, I too got Kate's joke, as I recall - but at this moment in time my memory is hazy as to its actual wording...

Hoping the thaw continues well into February so I can make 12th.

I am really bummed that I will be in the wrong state when he plays Anaheim, California, next month.
