Subject: RE: Music sessions in Surrey From: Old Vermin Date: 10 Feb 11 - 07:11 AM Times, of course, are in Morris Time. |
Subject: RE: Music sessions in Surrey From: Old Vermin Date: 10 Feb 11 - 07:17 AM And Kevin's number is also in the Surrey Advertiser gigs section. I think Andy Johnson runs sessions at the Hop Blossom in Farnham - that said, the regular stuff that I know of is a fiddle practise, but I think there's the odd date for the other stuff. Wednesday session was still in the Red Lion according to rumour and gossip a few weeks ago. Just trying to guess who might be posting as Topsie... |
Subject: RE: Music sessions in Surrey From: Suegorgeous Date: 10 Feb 11 - 03:37 PM There used to be a folk club at the Ram at Claygate in Surrey? anyone know if it's still going? |
Subject: RE: Music sessions in Surrey From: GUEST, topsie Date: 10 Feb 11 - 04:10 PM I can't find Claygate in this week's Surey Ad What's On section, but it does mention a singers' night at the Dorking Folk Club at the Friends Provident Social Club, Pixham Lane, on Wednesday 16 February. |
Subject: RE: Music sessions in Surrey From: GUEST, topsie Date: 10 Feb 11 - 04:14 PM It also mentions Cranleigh Accoustic Sessions, at the cricket club on The Common, on Thursday 17 February (acousticran@aol.com). You didn't say where you are in Surrey. |
Subject: RE: Music sessions in Surrey From: Suegorgeous Date: 10 Feb 11 - 07:21 PM Ah, here we are: The Ram folk club ... they just moved :) |
Subject: RE: Music sessions in Surrey From: Leadfingers Date: 10 Feb 11 - 07:24 PM Beat me to it Sue |
Subject: RE: Music sessions in Surrey From: Surreysinger Date: 10 Feb 11 - 11:07 PM Sue ... they moved over a year or more ago! |
Subject: RE: Music sessions in Surrey From: bazza Date: 11 Feb 11 - 02:48 AM topsie, I am in Pyrford near Ripley, Godalming looks good, thanks to all |
Subject: RE: Music sessions in Surrey From: Old Vermin Date: 11 Feb 11 - 10:20 AM Cranleigh Folk club still has a monthly sing around at the Three Compasses in Alfold. Usually first Friday. Run by Peter Skinner, whose email address is on my computer with the broken video driver. Details usually in Surrey Advertiser. Across the border is Horsham Folk Club on a Sunday evening. |
Subject: RE: Music sessions in Surrey From: My guru always said Date: 11 Feb 11 - 11:01 AM bazza, we're virtually neighbours, I'm in Fetcham. There's always the Anchor Folk Club in Byfleet. |
Subject: RE: Music sessions in Surrey From: G-Force Date: 11 Feb 11 - 11:47 AM The Wednesday Godalming session is temporarily moved to the Anchor (Godalming) for one more week. After that they will have to see if the Red Lion is available again (new owners, you know). We prefer the Wednesday session, as the Monday one in the Star can get a bit crowded - it's not a very big room, and the pub is quite popular. Bazza, we're in Pyrford too. Are you the concertina player we met at Tenterden last October? Perhaps we ought to start something more local. There seems to be a desperate lack of pub sessions round here. We also go to the Anchor folk club in Byfleet as mentioned above, and it's a great folk club but not a session. |
Subject: RE: Music sessions in Surrey From: Waddon Pete Date: 11 Feb 11 - 02:06 PM ....and always remembering, in the far north of Surrey, the long-lived Croydon Folksong Club! http://www.croydonfolkclub.org.uk/ Best wishes, Peter |
Subject: RE: Music sessions in Surrey From: Surreysinger Date: 11 Feb 11 - 02:39 PM If you want folk clubs, you could try the Music Institute in Guildford. Not a session ... always have a guest. We have Jeff Warner next Friday (18th March). For more information see the Electric Voices website which will also give you details of the Jon Boden and the Remnant Kings gig at Farnham Maltings next Tuesday. |
Subject: RE: Music sessions in Surrey From: bazza Date: 11 Feb 11 - 02:56 PM Hi g-force yes it was me at Tenterden,I agree its a long way to go for a session There was one at The Blue Anchor a few years ago then it moved to St Johns and didnt last long there,See you down the Anchor folk club one night and we can have a chat about it. |
Subject: RE: Music sessions in Surrey From: Suegorgeous Date: 11 Feb 11 - 04:15 PM Surreysinger - well, I wouldn't know... don't live in Surrey, just grew up there, and go there seldom now since my mum died. :) |
Subject: RE: Music sessions in Surrey From: Old Vermin Date: 12 Feb 11 - 12:21 PM Hadn't heard the Red Lion had changed hands again. Much prefer the Star as a pub to either Red Lion or Anchor - granted the Anchors been through a couple of upheavals since I was last in. Might wander down on Wednesday if I don't do 'advanced' Morris. |
Subject: RE: Music sessions in Surrey From: G-Force Date: 17 Feb 11 - 11:47 AM Hi Bazza Have sent you a message if you'd like to look at your Personal Page. |
Subject: RE: Music sessions in Surrey From: GUEST,Phil Date: 16 May 11 - 03:35 AM Bazza There is now a website listing the sessions in and around Godalming: www.godalmingsessions.org.uk |
Subject: RE: Music sessions in Surrey From: GUEST,Tom Bliss Date: 16 May 11 - 05:05 AM Great to hear there are sessions in Godalming - I was born and bred in this pretty little town and still have close friends in town (and 10 acres of coppiced chestnut up near Charterhouse which is cropped by someone else, but I try to visit regularly). Next time I'm down I'll pop in. (Ceilidhs in Godalming too of course). There was a session at the Good Intent in Puttenham (my old local) - which is Hants, but only just - but I don't know it its still going. Is there still a session in Farncombe? Tom |
Subject: RE: Music sessions in Surrey From: GUEST,charley.seabrook Date: 14 Sep 11 - 12:41 PM Old Vermin - Do you know if there is a music session at Hop Blossom? And when? |
Subject: RE: Music sessions in Surrey From: Old Vermin Date: 14 Sep 11 - 04:30 PM Hop Blossom:Andy Johnson or indeed the landlord would be the ones to know. I've once been to Andy's fiddle-class-based session there, redefined to include my guitar as quiet melody. Think someone did mention to Andy the possibility of a more general session the other day. If I hear anything.... Godalming: I recall the local paper writing recently that the Wednesday session is now at the Harrow in Compton. |
Subject: RE: Music sessions in Surrey From: GUEST,charlotte seabrook Date: 02 Oct 11 - 07:51 PM How about the Garden Gate at Aldershot on the first monday? Does anyone know what that is like? or anyone going along tomorrow eve? |
Subject: RE: Music sessions in Surrey From: GUEST,Tom Bliss Date: 02 Oct 11 - 08:36 PM Grin. Before the trees grew up I could see The Harrow across the fields from my bedroom! I was christened in Compton (pron 'Cumpton' btw). We used to walk to church through the beer garden, and l later it became a nice stroll for a pint. Perhaps its time for a visit. |
Subject: RE: Music sessions in Surrey From: bubblyrat Date: 03 Oct 11 - 05:06 AM Hi Tom ! Interesting that you were born & bred in Godalming ! I am descended from Joan Tribe ,or Trybe , who was born in Godalming in about 1560 ( which makes me a real "Southerner " , I guess ) , although later ancestors seem to have migrated (slightly) to Fernhurst and, eventually , Littlehampton . I was brought up in Midhurst ( I lived in Cowdray House itself !). Roger ( in Oxted !) |
Subject: RE: Music sessions in Surrey From: Bonzo3legs Date: 03 Oct 11 - 05:40 AM Ah, next to the wonderful polo lawns!!! |
Subject: RE: Music sessions in Surrey From: bubblyrat Date: 03 Oct 11 - 09:57 AM Well, Bonzo , there was the "home field " , a practice ground next to Cowdray House itself ,and the polo pitches next to the ruins of Cowdray Castle ,which is also where point-to-point racing took place . The proper big matches took place some miles away , in the Ambersham / Horsham area .It was a fabulous place to be brought up at , though ; swimming pool , acres & acres of grounds to play in ,plenty of venison ,pheasant , partridge etc ,trout from the river Rother , school cricket & rugger ( no football allowed !) on the playing-fields in the shadow of the old Castle ......I'll stop now ! |
