Subject: Tune Req: Morris tune Kingston Black From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 22 Feb 11 - 02:39 PM Where on the Net can I listen to the tune 'Kingston Black' please? I heard it played by Hook Morris, but can find no reference to it anywhere else. I believe a Kingston Black is a type of apple, but does anyone know the origin of this tune's title? |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Morris tune Kingston Black From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 23 Feb 11 - 05:00 AM Thank you all! John B, I saw a reference to The Tarrantella Ceilidh Band and a CD called 'Totally Inappropriate', but not sure if this is a joke! Would like to obtain this CD if it exists. Lester, You must forgive me but I'm quite old, what did you mean please? The sentence you posted is a bit like Chinese to me! |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Morris tune Kingston Black From: GUEST,Derek Tarrant Date: 23 Feb 11 - 10:30 AM The Tune 'Kingston Black' was written by myself in commemoration of my good friend at the time Ian Shaw who killed himself in the Year 2000 he was a brilliant musician and had a love of cider, his favourite being from the cider apple Kingston Black. As a musician in Hook Eagle morris i brought it into the side along with other tunes, and for 6 years running the band Tarrantella i recorded it on our only CD "totally Inappropriate" I hope this clears things up and anyone wanting an mp3 of the track and i also have the music written down somewhere (there was an original 3rd part) i can supply it if you contact me on derek@netsystec.net as i always wanted it to be played as often as possible to keep Ians memory alive. Subject: RE: Tune Req: Morris tune Kingston Black From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 23 Feb 11 - 10:47 AM Hello Derek, How kind of you to contact me. I am so sorry to hear that your friend Ian took his own life. I have watched with great pleasure the Youtube clips of Hook Eagle, as I am a great fan of Border Morris. I particularly liked the tunes 'Rickett's Hornpipe' and your composition 'Kingston Black'. I now know dozens of Morris tunes! I'm rather old and don't understand mp3, but I would love to buy a copy of your CD 'Totally Inappropriate' if they are still for sale. Also, I'd like to know if Hook Eagle have booked any venues for this season, as I adore Morris festivals and would like to see them dancing. Thank you again for the contact, I'll now go to your email address and leave you a message there. Kindest regards, Eliza. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Morris tune Kingston Black From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 23 Feb 11 - 02:15 PM Bliss! Played it five times and my husband is saying he's getting a bit tired of 'that tune'! Thank you very much Derek. |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Morris tune Kingston Black From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 23 Feb 11 - 09:15 PM And thank you for putting the PDF of 'Kingston Black' on your page. It's a wonderful tune. Will the page be there very long? If not, I could make a MIDI and submit it for the Mudcat MIDI's. Then someone might make an abc file, and that would be two more ways that people can learn the piece and honor your friend's memory. |
