Hi all from Dublin,

It's been 3 weeks since the final session of the 2011 Frank Harte Fest. wow! the weekend was brilliant. This was the sixth year for the event and the format allied to the experience of the organisers has proved itself to be a winner. The venue is the Teachers' Club on Parnell Square and it is so central that I don't think it could be better, the staff and managment in the club are very supportive and go above and beyond the call of duty to help to make sure that all the events go smoothly. (Thanks Tadgh, Steve, Dave, Oomh and all the temps, you were mighty, one and all).

The festival which is organised by the Góilín Singers' Club has deservedly, earned a reputation for being one of the top traditional singing festivals, not just in Ireland, but throughout the English speaking world. One aspect that makes it so special is the number of international visitors that come to share the experience, At this years fest I met singers from Australia, USA, Canada, Norway, Germany, Holland, France, Spain, England, Scotland, Wales and from every county and corner of Ireland. At an impromptu session late on Sunday evening some of us listened to two young men from Nepal singing love songs and lullabies that they learned from their mothers when they were children, that was an experience that will live long in my memory

The annual Sunday morning singing and walking tour was centered on Glasnevin Cemetery. As one of the organisers I have gotten a lot of very positive feedback. Who would have thought that you could have so much fun in a graveyard? Well despite the rein, we did. There are many wonderful people whose last remains reside in Glasnevin cemetery and about 150 of the living did them proud with some great singers singing some great songs at the gravesides of some great people. It was very enjoyable and memorable

So, the organisers have met and are already making plans for the 7th annual Frank Harte Festival which will take place 21st, 22nd and 23rd September 2012. Feedback, positive and negative has been taken on board and small changes will ensure that the next featival will be even more successful than the one just gone. Names are being penciled in for inclusion as guests and ideas for the "Walk" are being mulled over for consideration.

If you participated in this years festival we would be grateful for any feedback or comments (positive or negative) that might help to ensure that FHF-2012 will be the best one yet.

Also, if you think have a good idea for a focus for the 2012 singing and walking tour we would love to hear from you.

Fergus

It's long past time that I put finger to keyboard and say something about the Frank Harte festival. It was outstanding. It's worth the trip to Ireland just by itself. If you just want to listen to some good singing, you will get a lot out of it, but it's even better if you go prepared to sing yourself.

North American catters will likely be surprised (and hopefully delighted, as I was) by the high standard of singing at the open sessions. That doesn't mean elitist. The crowd is very welcoming and supportive, but the people who opened their mouths to sing actually knew their songs, and sang them well. I have been to too many song circles on this side of the pond where people stuck their noses in their songsheets or Rise up Singing, and still apparently didn't know the words. I also liked the format where the MC called on a few people to sing, and then left the floor open. The "everyone take a turn" way of organizing a sing has its place, but this was better.

I came away with several new songs that I intend to learn, and some great memories. My thanks and respect to all involved.

Edmund

Amazing weekend, filled with songs and so many fine singers. A great chance to hear Michael Ned Quin and the young Gaelic singers Nollaig Ni Laoire and Eoin Warner, who were all new to me. Donal Lunny's talk on Frank Harte was a pleasure and Ken Hall and Peta Webb's talk on Topic Records was a delight. It was an honour to share a stage with you and Roisin Gaffney and Joe Mulherron (I think Tracy would agree!) Still can't quite take that in but I have seen the pics on Facebook so it did happen! The walk round Glasnevin was something else, must have been two hundred of us...got near droont wi the rain, didn't matter. In a weekend of many highlights one thing stands out....Siobhan Harte, Frank's grand daughter, aged 5 singing like a wee lintie. Her spirited rendition of "Do You Love an Apple" was just brilliant. There will be "bugger all" in life that will ever faze that wee lassie.

Great time catching up with old friends and making some new ones.....it's great this folk music lark!

Roll on next year!

Great weekend, as expected. Lots of 'catters to be seen and heard. Excellent concert, talks and sessions. Fascinating walk through Glasnevin Cemetery, ably led by our own Fergie. Mind you - I reckon Harte might be outstaying his welcome at the Heavenly Session in the Sky - our (newly minted) tradition of having perfect weather for the Sunday morning walk was lost in a downpour... He needs to pray harder*!

Regards

Hi Fergus,
I think it would be more appropiate to say we had a ball, or balls, rather than a hooley. The night was highlighted by Ken Kenny, who read from his 2 books of Bush Poetry. I have just finished reading them and found them most enjoyable and strongly recommend you seek him out at the festival and get yourselves a copy of one or both. Roll on next weekend.

Hi all,

We had a great hoolie at An Góilín tonight. It was different to the usual sessions, lots of jokes and bawdy songs, well not exactly bawdy but risqué (a word with a fada, but not gaeilge). We had some nice Scotts Gealic singers also.

Next Friday begins the Frank Harte Festival and it's going to be the best yet. If you need a ticket for the Saturday night concert you had better get your spake in soon 'cos they are getting rare as hens' teeth.

You can contact me on 087-6724714

Fergus
