Wondering if it s the 'sound effects' (used the stock ones in garageband) that might be what its picked up.

Indeed not ~~ in fact, they don't get paid much at all!

I'm tempted to put up a blank video with a well known title and see if it picks on me again.
Are there any good alternatives to youtube?

Same thing for me. It seems quite random and abritrary. There seems no way to contact the people and ask for proof etc. all you can do is send a generic I didn't do it form.

I've got a YouTube vid with a copyright statement now. They tell me I don't have to do anything, so I'm not doing anything. They haven't deleted it yet, and the copyright text keeps going away and coming back - very strange!
(It's The Bluebell Polka, for the terminally curious)

Its been a while now. Still got the message on the back end telling me copyright. But it hasn't been deleted, nor have adverts appeared on it. All very odd.

I think I'd wait for YouTube to delete the video, especially since this song is in the public domain.
I posted a slide show of Christmas photos for the women's center where i do volunteer work. The person who made the slide show video, had used a excerpt from Beethoven's 6th Symphony. The composition was in the public domain, of course; but Google identified the piece as a recording from a certain symphony orchestra. Google said there might be ads shown before the video is displayed, but they didn't tell me to take the video down. I guess the ads were supposed to pay royalties for the symphony recording.

As you can imagine, we're finding it difficult to open enough offshore accounts in which to deposit the royalty payments. And for the benefit of the ironically-challenged or the Inland Revenue, the foregoing was a joke!

I first encountered the "Bold Fisherman" that Bogart sings in "The African Queen" in A Treasury of Folk Songs, compiled by John and Sylia Kolb and published as a drugstore paperback.

When I first got actively interested in folk music around 1952-53 (dashed out and bought a $10.00 guitar), the dozen or so folk song junkies I fell in with all had copies of the book, so I armed myself with a copy. Everybody had the 1948 edition. I got a reprint, 1953. Same book, different cover, cost 35 cents instead of the previous 25.

I don't recall that anything in it was copyrighted.

Great collection. Still have it, use it.

Don Firth

There are (at least) two "Bold Fisherman" songs, one a folk song (notably sung by the Coppers and Walter Pardon) and one a music hall song which was written by George W. Hunt in the 1870's or earlier; see this thread for more info, including (close to) the original text and tune. Bogie sang a version of the Hunt song, though the latter two verses and the latter part of the tune seem to be Hollywood invention, twisted well beyond what usually happens in folk "evolution". Whether Bogie actually learned it from his grandmother (as he said when introducing the song later on a radio broadcast) is dubious--I believe the song was cockeye-cocted into the script, and Bogie learned it from there.

So, if it was a clip of Bogie, or of someone singing the same verses Bogie sang, there probably was copyright infringement; regardless of whether anyone profited from it monetarily, damage was ostensibly done by making the song widely available gratis, without permission and without recompense to the arrangers. If it was Hunt's version or the folk song, you're safe (barring transgressing someone's copyrighted arrangement). If it was some other version of the Hunt song and your version is closer to Bogie's tune than Hunt's tune, you may have to do some research to prove there was no infringement.

Disclaimer: I'm not a lawyer, and this advice is only worth the paper it's not printed on.

No ... I listened carefully to the tune she was playing and it definitely is the more routine version of "Bold Fisherman", and I suspect it may very well be the Copper's version (which is very similar to a lot of others). And is nothing like Bogie's strange song at all ! Rees's though (and I liked that ... thanks for the introduction to it) is definitely the Bogie song.

Ooops! I do apologise, Surreysinger. Having listened again to Sarah's version more carefully, she is not playing Rees's song at all. I presume it is the Copper's song after all.

Surreysinger, look on Youtube and there are several versions of Humph singing it, then compare that with Rees Wesson's rendition, (the one who's lyrics you found) and you'll prolly agree that the tune is pretty much the same, as is the first verse. And that is what Sarah is playing too.
It would seem that Humph's character was singing an old comic song which has mutated once or twice.

Having just googled "Bold Fisherman" and "African Queen", I came up with this link with the lyrics for the version of the Bold Fisherman in the film.

Totally different song, of course. I know of no version of the one you're playing which has the lyrics about his boat going "wibble wobble wibble wobble" ! I might consider learning it if there was!! I think the suggestion that this is why it has cropped up might be correct. I'm now thinking that I might try putting up my unaccompanied version of the song (a version which so far I haven't heard anybody else singing) just to see if I get the same reaction!

Who are they? Where are they based? (Doesn't sound like UK - we have PPL and MCPS etc).

Could it be a scam/try-on?

I cannot give you any advice as to if you should leave it up there. I am sure others here have had the same problem with YouTube and will be in a better position to give you advice

What was the video that you posted?

They are not obliged to host your video on their site of course. They also seem to take videos off if there is a chance of copyright infringement. I understood that they usually only removed content after someone points out the possible problem with it (copyright etc etc)

Good luck

Mmmmm LDT.
Can't answer the question precisely. But, I'd write back and ask them to sue you, for their share of the thousands of pounds that you've earned by playing it!
Quite what 10% of 0.0000001p is, I don't know, but you cad have fun watchibg these people spend thousands trying to get it!
I'll come along to court if you like!
