I keep hearing two chord / melody variants of 900 Miles, and I'm wondering what to make of the differences. One version seems to be played as Dm and G, the other Am, C, and E (or E7). I wonder if anyone knows much about these two ways of interpreting the tune. Just to make things more interesting, the Dillard Chandler version of "Rain and Snow", as collected by Folkways, seems to have the same melody as the three chord version of 900 Miles, while the Obray Ramsey version of "Rain and Snow" is quite close to the Dm and G version.

I've heard people refer to both versions as 'modal'. I'm used to hearing modal banjo tunes that are structured around G or Gsus and F (or capoed equivalent). This begs the question as to what we mean when we talk about modal tunes.

Thoughts anybody? Favorite versions of these two tunes?
