I've been asked to give a plug for David's two gigs this coming week, both in the county of Yorkshire (UK). The first is a half-hour "showcase" solo set at Barnsley Folk & Acoustic (at the Trades Club) on Monday 4th April, and the second is a full-evening themed song-and-verse presentation in partnership with Jim Saville, entitled "From Both Sides Now", at Morley Folk Club on Wednesday 6th April. Daisy and art, I am not impressed by anonymous slagging off. For the record, I am one of those who like David's singing and the passion he puts into a song. Also, his material selection is impeccable and leaves "established artists" standing in this respect. He is helped in this, I expect, by his vast listening experiences and knowledge of the field.

I also like Jon Boden's singing (and I know several who cannot stand it). And don't forget the number of "slaggers" Peter Bellamy attracted. Sometimes you have to get beyond the idiosyncratic elements of a singer or your personal like or dislike of them, to get to understand what they are doing with a song.

But then, if Jedward is your cup of tea, you're always welcome to them, too.

I was there last night. There is no denying Dave's committment and passion for the music. Overall an interesting selection of songs.
A 30 minute spot for an unaccompanied singer is quite a challenge and I am not sure Dave's singing is quite up to the task. In the lower ranges his voice is quite strong but the higher it goes the weaker it gets.
I would have no problem if it had been a floorspot but expectations are increased when a singer is getting paid. Dave's final song was Withered and Died which was probably the weakest performance of the set; never a good idea.

I have an open mind, and I am ready to give him another listen.

We all started somewhere and were grateful for the 'chance'

I know Dave commands much respect which may be attributable to his power with the pen, which can be 'mightier than the sword'

And he sure aint no quitter

After 10 years I would expect to see significant improvement in his singing and he has assured me that this is the case in a previous conversation.

I have the utmost respect for Dave as a Bloke ,as a Singer and as a Folkie. His style is so strongly rooted in the Tradition and his knowledge is damned near impeccable. His reviews are always fair, honest and perceptive as comes from his understanding, respect and love of our wonderful heritage.
If un-accompanied singing is not for you, dont knock it if you aint tried it.What do you want Folk Song a la Radio Three Classically trained "singers". Not for me thanks very much. This is what the tradition is about.

I have been singing both unaccompanied and accompanied around folk clubs and festivals for the last 35 years. I guess only other people who were there would be able to judge wether my critique is fair.

Time to get the thread back on track and junk the abuse. It has no place whatever here.

For the record, Johncharles, I was there at the gig too, and it was a good one, helped along by the supportive atmosphere of the club. Dave sang strongly, and his set was genuinely well received. And it was well put together with plenty of contrasts.
But I suspect you left the room early, because his final song was a rousing rendition of What's The Life Of A Man. That was after Withered And Died. If you want a critique, IMHO you appear to have mistaken sensitivity and shading for vocal weakness. So many other singers seem to believe that blasting a room with force ten is the only way to put a song across, but I would agree with Dave here, that less can be so much more in the understanding of a song's message.

I for one will be at Dave's next gig - I'm sure it will yield further insights.

Moorleyman - yes I had to leave before the end so my comments only referred to the 30 minute spot. these types of judgements are always going to be subjective. I think Dave has a better voice waiting to emerge and as with many things a little expert tuition often helps this process.

Strange – many of us have always been of the impression that Moorley Man is Dave Kidman himself. I do rather hope we were wrong now – I have no right or reason to comment on anyone's private life, but pretending to be an unbiased observer of your own performance is something else. Using Mudcat to plug your own gigs is perfectly acceptable, as long as you make your own identity clear. Hopefully Moorley Man will clarify the confusion.

David appears at Morley Folk Club, this Wednesday 6th April together with Jim Saville presenting an evening titled "From Both Sides Now" on the theme of conflict. Should be interesting.

I too had always assumed that Moorleyman was Dave's own name. Now self publicity is ok but i think should be identified. Unfortunately whilst personal abuse on this forum is not on, constructive reviews and views are obviously better. Dave is i think the 'marmite' of folk, you either like him or you don't. He has in the past provoked a similar reaction on this forum.

Having just been alerted to this thread, I felt it time for me too to now pitch in and come on board on the Mudcat Forum.

Let me assure you that I am indeed who I say I am. David Kidman, as the above Mudcat name claims. And while it is encouraging to find I have some friends out there in cyberspace it is also most distressing to read the diatribes of those anonymous slaggers who seem to be labouring under the mistaken belief that they actually know me in any personal capacity.

If the Moderators of the Mudcat were paying due attention, this kind of abuse would not even slip through the net, let alone actually get to be published on the Forum. Frankly, it doesn't exactly give me a lot of confidence in the Forum, even though I can recognise it has great value as an information source.

It would appear that someone is playing some quite nasty games here, and I intend to raise this issue with the Moderator/s.

In the meantime, please can the Mudcat Moderators do something to prune this thread back to what it would seem was the original poster's intention - to give a little kind publicity to some of my gigs? That, surely, a basic facility which any Mudcat member should be able to make use of without fear of being personally attacked.
