Subject: David Kidman - April 2011 Gigs From: MoorleyMan Date: 02 Apr 11 - 06:49 PM I've been asked to give a plug for David's two gigs this coming week, both in the county of Yorkshire (UK). The first is a half-hour "showcase" solo set at Barnsley Folk & Acoustic (at the Trades Club) on Monday 4th April, and the second is a full-evening themed song-and-verse presentation in partnership with Jim Saville, entitled "From Both Sides Now", at Morley Folk Club on Wednesday 6th April. Further details on his website (sorry, blue clicky didn't work). Deserves support - should be good...! |

Subject: RE: David Kidman - April 2011 Gigs From: George Papavgeris Date: 04 Apr 11 - 02:14 PM Daisy and art, I am not impressed by anonymous slagging off. For the record, I am one of those who like David's singing and the passion he puts into a song. Also, his material selection is impeccable and leaves "established artists" standing in this respect. He is helped in this, I expect, by his vast listening experiences and knowledge of the field. I also like Jon Boden's singing (and I know several who cannot stand it). And don't forget the number of "slaggers" Peter Bellamy attracted. Sometimes you have to get beyond the idiosyncratic elements of a singer or your personal like or dislike of them, to get to understand what they are doing with a song. But then, if Jedward is your cup of tea, you're always welcome to them, too. |

Subject: RE: David Kidman - April 2011 Gigs From: johncharles Date: 05 Apr 11 - 04:24 AM I was there last night. There is no denying Dave's committment and passion for the music. Overall an interesting selection of songs. A 30 minute spot for an unaccompanied singer is quite a challenge and I am not sure Dave's singing is quite up to the task. In the lower ranges his voice is quite strong but the higher it goes the weaker it gets. I would have no problem if it had been a floorspot but expectations are increased when a singer is getting paid. Dave's final song was Withered and Died which was probably the weakest performance of the set; never a good idea. |
Subject: RE: David Kidman - April 2011 Gigs From: breezy Date: 05 Apr 11 - 04:27 AM I will look forward to hearing Dave again. I have an open mind, and I am ready to give him another listen. We all started somewhere and were grateful for the 'chance' I know Dave commands much respect which may be attributable to his power with the pen, which can be 'mightier than the sword' And he sure aint no quitter After 10 years I would expect to see significant improvement in his singing and he has assured me that this is the case in a previous conversation. reviews please. |
Subject: RE: David Kidman - April 2011 Gigs From: GUEST,OldNicKilby Date: 05 Apr 11 - 05:19 AM I have the utmost respect for Dave as a Bloke ,as a Singer and as a Folkie. His style is so strongly rooted in the Tradition and his knowledge is damned near impeccable. His reviews are always fair, honest and perceptive as comes from his understanding, respect and love of our wonderful heritage. If un-accompanied singing is not for you, dont knock it if you aint tried it.What do you want Folk Song a la Radio Three Classically trained "singers". Not for me thanks very much. This is what the tradition is about. Keep up the Singing Dave You know your pretty good and so do those of us that know and respect you Nic, Jacky and Vic |
Subject: RE: David Kidman - April 2011 Gigs From: johncharles Date: 05 Apr 11 - 05:57 AM "If un-accompanied singing is not for you, dont knock it if you aint tried it." I have been singing both unaccompanied and accompanied around folk clubs and festivals for the last 35 years. I guess only other people who were there would be able to judge wether my critique is fair. |
Subject: RE: David Kidman - April 2011 Gigs From: JHW Date: 05 Apr 11 - 06:09 AM I'm sure Dave won't mind the 'anonymous slagging off' as it all helps to keep the thread flying! |
Subject: RE: David Kidman - April 2011 Gigs From: GUEST,Sid S Date: 05 Apr 11 - 06:33 AM Is he the funny guy who wobbles his head a lot when he sings? |

Subject: RE: David Kidman - April 2011 Gigs From: MoorleyMan Date: 05 Apr 11 - 08:22 AM Time to get the thread back on track and junk the abuse. It has no place whatever here. For the record, Johncharles, I was there at the gig too, and it was a good one, helped along by the supportive atmosphere of the club. Dave sang strongly, and his set was genuinely well received. And it was well put together with plenty of contrasts. But I suspect you left the room early, because his final song was a rousing rendition of What's The Life Of A Man. That was after Withered And Died. If you want a critique, IMHO you appear to have mistaken sensitivity and shading for vocal weakness. So many other singers seem to believe that blasting a room with force ten is the only way to put a song across, but I would agree with Dave here, that less can be so much more in the understanding of a song's message. I for one will be at Dave's next gig - I'm sure it will yield further insights. |
Subject: RE: David Kidman - April 2011 Gigs From: johncharles Date: 05 Apr 11 - 08:48 AM Moorleyman - yes I had to leave before the end so my comments only referred to the 30 minute spot. these types of judgements are always going to be subjective. I think Dave has a better voice waiting to emerge and as with many things a little expert tuition often helps this process. |
Subject: RE: David Kidman - April 2011 Gigs From: Crane Driver Date: 05 Apr 11 - 08:53 AM Strange – many of us have always been of the impression that Moorley Man is Dave Kidman himself. I do rather hope we were wrong now – I have no right or reason to comment on anyone's private life, but pretending to be an unbiased observer of your own performance is something else. Using Mudcat to plug your own gigs is perfectly acceptable, as long as you make your own identity clear. Hopefully Moorley Man will clarify the confusion. Andrew McKay |
Subject: RE: David Kidman - April 2011 Gigs From: keyofzed Date: 05 Apr 11 - 08:57 AM Getting this thread back on topic. David appears at Morley Folk Club, this Wednesday 6th April together with Jim Saville presenting an evening titled "From Both Sides Now" on the theme of conflict. Should be interesting. Subject: RE: David Kidman - April 2011 Gigs From: MoorleyMan Date: 05 Apr 11 - 09:03 AM Understood, Johncharles, but I was referring to the closing song in Dave's 30-minute spot which was WTLOAM, its rousing finale, and with the famous "barnsley choir" in full throated throng - or should that be swing? See you at Barnsley again some time, no doubt. |
Subject: RE: David Kidman - April 2011 Gigs From: GUEST,MC Fat Date: 05 Apr 11 - 09:03 AM I too had always assumed that Moorleyman was Dave's own name. Now self publicity is ok but i think should be identified. Unfortunately whilst personal abuse on this forum is not on, constructive reviews and views are obviously better. Dave is i think the 'marmite' of folk, you either like him or you don't. He has in the past provoked a similar reaction on this forum. |
Subject: RE: David Kidman - April 2011 Gigs From: GUEST,Charley O'Neill Date: 05 Apr 11 - 09:10 AM So, Mr Moorley Man, are you David Kidman, or not?? |
Subject: RE: David Kidman - April 2011 Gigs From: johncharles Date: 05 Apr 11 - 09:14 AM Crane driver I have just spoken to someone who also believes that Moorleyman is in fact Dave Kidman. |
Subject: RE: David Kidman - April 2011 Gigs From: johncharles Date: 05 Apr 11 - 09:52 AM "From: MoorleyMan - PM Date: 19 Dec 10 - 09:01 AM Like Vic Smith, I review a large number of cds (of various kinds of music) on a regular basis, including for fRoots. So I am writing from direct practical experience here." Not conclusive but suggests that MoorlyMan and Dave Kidman are one and the same. |
Subject: RE: David Kidman - April 2011 Gigs From: breezy Date: 05 Apr 11 - 10:11 AM He is, end of. |
Subject: RE: David Kidman - April 2011 Gigs From: nutty Date: 05 Apr 11 - 10:11 AM I also believed the Daves mudcat name was MoorleyMan so I really do hope that he's not playing games. Alternatively, it could be someone who has access to his computer. Strange!! |
Subject: RE: David Kidman - April 2011 Gigs From: DavidKidman Date: 05 Apr 11 - 10:32 AM Having just been alerted to this thread, I felt it time for me too to now pitch in and come on board on the Mudcat Forum. Let me assure you that I am indeed who I say I am. David Kidman, as the above Mudcat name claims. And while it is encouraging to find I have some friends out there in cyberspace it is also most distressing to read the diatribes of those anonymous slaggers who seem to be labouring under the mistaken belief that they actually know me in any personal capacity. If the Moderators of the Mudcat were paying due attention, this kind of abuse would not even slip through the net, let alone actually get to be published on the Forum. Frankly, it doesn't exactly give me a lot of confidence in the Forum, even though I can recognise it has great value as an information source.
It would appear that someone is playing some quite nasty games here, and I intend to raise this issue with the Moderator/s. Closed for review by Head Mods |
