Subject: April Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: curmudgeon Date: 10 Apr 11 - 02:40 PM The monthly shanty/forebitter/ballad session for April will be this Saturday at The Press Room in Portsmouth NH from 3:30 to 7:30 PM. Paul and Greg will be coming in from Albany, and it would be really nice to see some of the former regulars from Cape Ann and Greater Portland. See you on Saturday - Tom |
Subject: RE: April Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: Charley Noble Date: 10 Apr 11 - 09:06 PM Unfortunately, I'm co-coordinated a couple of workshops at NEFFA the same damn weekend. Blame it all on Easter! Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: April Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: Jeri Date: 11 Apr 11 - 11:30 PM Sorry I won't be there. I missed last month too, and I'd really like to be there. Not just for the always-great music, but to see/hear the Albany folks. I knew Greg back in 197-ahem. |
Subject: RE: April Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: Bupkes Date: 12 Apr 11 - 05:52 PM Yeah, I'm 50/50 about coming, because NEFFA's happening this weekend. See http://www.neffa.org/ Next month for sure, though...! Marty |
Subject: RE: April Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: SINSULL Date: 13 Apr 11 - 12:13 PM I may actually make this one. Be sure to put in a plug for David's concert at TRUBRIT's on the 23rd. |
Subject: RE: April Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: Bat Goddess Date: 13 Apr 11 - 02:37 PM Dr. Z. wanted to do Tom's office procedure this Friday, but Tom wants to make sure he can inbibe a Guinness or two on Saturday. So he's scheduled for next Friday. (Don't panic. He says it's "just a spot" but Dr. Z. doesn't like to leave ANY possible problem in Tom's throat.) Linn |
Subject: RE: April Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: GUEST,Paul Schurr Date: 14 Apr 11 - 10:23 PM Greg and I are looking forward to the Press Room music Friday and Saturday. I talked to Greg earlier today and he's doing the same thing I'm doing -- trying to lock in lyrics on songs and recitations. We can hardly wait to be back to our Portsmouth home away from home! |
Subject: RE: April Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: GUEST,Peadar (formerly) of Portsmouth Date: 16 Apr 11 - 11:47 AM Wrapping up housework and planning to be there for a while. See you all there. |
Subject: RE: April Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: Bupkes Date: 16 Apr 11 - 12:39 PM I hear that Tony Hilliard & Barry O'Brien from the Gloucester Chantey gang are coming too. Shaping up to be a good session this brisk spring day. Marty |
Subject: RE: April Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: Bat Goddess Date: 16 Apr 11 - 12:43 PM Tried to post earlier but server timed out. Anywho, Paul and Greg made landfall at last night's Press Room session -- great to see (and HEAR!) them. Both the session and The Press Room were a bit quieter than usual, the session probably because of NEFFA and The Press Room, why? because the sun's out? The newly blooming spring flowers were shivering! Had a few other long lost friends show up last night, too -- Helene Jones who used to sing with us in the '80s (I think she moved to England not long after the two Great Bay Folklife Festivals of the early '90s) and Dianne Lavoie who doesn't appear often enough. Looks like (according to Facebook status posts and comments) despite NEFFA, we'll have a lively crowd today. We'll do what we can to warm things up a bit (since the weather sure isn't cooperating). Linn |

Subject: RE: April Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: Bat Goddess Date: 17 Apr 11 - 10:23 AM Absolutely lovely session! Besides Paul Schurr and Greg Clark who drove out for the sessions (Friday night, too) from Albany, NY, Dianne Lavoie made a first time two sessions in a row (Friday and Saturday) in the over 20 years she's been sporadically making an appearance. And she stayed for the whole session! Emery Hutchins also stayed for the entire session and we had some really nice three-way concertina playing (Hutch, Tom and Jeff Warner) including two baritone concertinas at the same time (Hutch's Anglo and Jeff's English). Tony Hilliard and Janet came up from Gloucester for, I think, the second time (I missed their first) and added some new songs. And Ernie Pigeon once again represented Newburyport (so I HAD to sing "The Plum Island National Anthem"). The entire roster of those in attendance: Tom Hall (Curmudgeon) & Linn Schulz (Bat Goddess), Paul Schurr, Greg Clark, Tony Hilliard & Janet Young, Mike Blair, Emery Hutchins, Ernie Pigeon (NbptErnie), Dianne Lavoie, Pete Hale (& Laurette) and his dad, Don Hale, Barry O'Brien from Gloucester, Marty Stock (Bupkes), Jeff Warner and Barbara Benn. Will (whose last name I don't know) from Gloucester arrived shortly before the end of the session (but in time to sing one song) with his family. Other chorus singers and listeners included Bob Frost (banjo-less), Tony Giblin, Phyllis Richard-Sloat, Chris Vaughn and Sharon and Lou Stamas. I'll start the song list when I get home from work. Also got some decent photos which I'll post at Facebook. Later! Linn |

Subject: RE: April Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: Charley Noble Date: 17 Apr 11 - 11:11 PM Linn- Thanks! Looks like you all had a great workout! Sorry to miss the session but I also had great fun at NEFFA. See you in May! Cheerily, Charley Noble, adrift in Brooklyn for much of the week |
Subject: RE: April Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: Bat Goddess Date: 18 Apr 11 - 09:11 AM As usual, I welcome additions and corrections. I'm always afraid that somewhere during the session I'll have spaced it (while deciding what to sing next, trying to catch particular words to a song, etcet etcet) and neglected to write something down. Linn |
Subject: RE: April Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: GUEST,Peadar (formerly) of Portsmouth Date: 18 Apr 11 - 12:55 PM The only correction I'll offer is that the second song I did (#30) is actually titled The Ferryman, a song written by Pete St. John. Had a lot of fun... Peter |
Subject: RE: April Shanty Session@The Press Room-NH From: Bat Goddess Date: 18 Apr 11 - 01:45 PM I've gotten all the photos (at least the ones I care to post) up at Facebook. Linn |
