Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Musichall song: Get(Take) your hands From: Jim Dixon Date: 18 Jul 02 - 07:42 AM Lead Belly (Huddie Ledbetter) recorded KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF HER (click to see lyrics in DT). If there were some connection between Lead Belly's song and some old music hall song, that certainly would be interesting to know. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Keep Your Hands Off--That's Mine From: GUEST,Dave Illingworth Date: 04 Jul 12 - 01:05 PM This query may have been resolved, in which case my apologies. I have been singing a version of this song for years, and thought I would revive it tomorrow for two old-folks' gigs. Just googled out of curiosity. Anyway, this is what I sing:- Percy lost his heart and married Mabel They took a trip to the dear old Isle of Wight Spooning everywhere, couples over there Going through a tunnel dark as night Mabel started giggling in the darkness Oh Percy do stop kissing me, said she Percy shouted out, Will you shine a light There's somebody kissing the wife and it isn't me Keep your hands of she's (that's) mine Keep your hands off she's (that's) mine You just be careful what you do That little bit of fancy work she doesn't belong to you She's a nice girl I know, and she squeezes absolutely fine You can do what you like with another fellow's wife But keep your hands off she's (that's) mine There may well be other verses. I learned it from an old BBC LP called NARROW BOATS (I think) which I have long lost. Although not a canal song, it was apparently popular amongst working boatmen, singing in the canalside pubs. In some venues (eg folk clubs) I have indeed segued it into the Leadbelly song, previously mentioned. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Keep Your Hands Off--That's Mine From: Susanne (skw) Date: 05 Jul 12 - 04:57 PM Can't compare his version to Dave's just now but Benny Graham sings it on "They're Coming Back to the Water - Songs of the Waterways" (1997). The notes say "The [...] song, learnt from the singing of Dave Blagrove seems to be a fragment of what may well have been a much longer song very much in the style of those popular in the Nineteenth Century Music Halls". |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Keep Your Hands Off--That's Mine From: GUEST,Dave Illingworth Date: 06 Jul 12 - 01:21 PM Susanne, I am pretty sure it was David Blagrove singing on the old BBC LP I mentioned. And the version did indeed sound like part of a longer song. Of course, over the years my words may well have changed from when I first heard it - what they call "the folk process"...... |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Keep Your Hands Off--That's Mine From: Black belt caterpillar wrestler Date: 30 Mar 21 - 04:58 PM Apparently it is not written down in John's little book of song lyrics but Hilary also thinks that he sang more verses! Robin |

I located that because of the post @ 04 Jul 12 - 01:05 PM |
