Subject: Holmfirth Festival of Folk 6-8 may 2011
From: Soldier boy
Date: 19 Apr 11 - 10:39 PM

Hiya guys and gals, who is coming to this jewel in the crown Folk Festival in one of the most beautiful parts of bonny Yorkshire (the setting for the 'Last of the Summer Wine' TV series)?

With a superb line up of concerts, dance, workshops, lots of morris dance teams, childrens events and many more happenings arranged and an excellent no cost fringe scene with music and song in many of the village pubs and hotels all day round this has to be the place to be to get the true atmosphere of a real and remarkable Folk Festival.

With a beautiful campsite just a short stroll from the heart of the village everything is close and at hand including accomodation, good restaurants, wine bars, fish and chips and fast food, lots of real ale and a superb micro brewery at 'The Nook' with award winning ales!

I can't do the blue clickitty stuff but I am sure someone will come on-line soon to put up the Holmfirth Festival of Folk web site for you to view.

Where is George Clarke (Tyke) when you need him?!!

Come and enjoy. See ya there. If you have'nt been before you'll love it. Trust me and enjoy the warm Yorkshire welcome!!

Chris

Many apols Tyke. I had done a trawl through the pages but not seen your thread for this festival which you started on 10 April.

I can't count your "George Clarke: An Apology" thread because the true subject matter [The Holmfirth Festival of Folk] is not in the thread title so folk would miss the primary objective.

I was going to let this thread die and stand aside to let Tyke's initial thread about this festival have a chance to take the reins and promote it as much as possible but he has allowed it to sink into oblivion and so is no longer promoting this brilliant festival. This is a great shame because this gem of a festival really deserves a big push - especially to people who have not been to it before because I know they will love it (and Holmfirth) so much......SO....I will...continue!!
Sorry Tyke.

So who is coming to this little gem of a festival?.. it has a brilliant line up of concerts and workshops and a strong "fringe" presence with singers and musicians in the local pubs and the streets full of morris dance teams adding lots of fun and colour throughout the weekend.

I can't do the blue clickety stuff but just key in "Holmfirth festival of folk" to pull up the festival web site for all the information you will need.

You can book your festival tickets and camping (a huge campsite just a short stroll from the village for tents, campervans and caravans with 24 hour security provided by stewards). You can even book 'camping only' at only £5pppn without having to buy a festival ticket to be able to camp - and not a lot of festivals offer that sort of flexibility and inclusion for every sort of folkie fan!
This festival really does cater for everyone.

And...did you know that "Show of Hands" are kicking off the festival on Thursday night (5 May) at The Picturedrome... Not bad hey!!

Chris

That is much appreciated and if you come across me on Saturday and find me dressed in a red army jacket and pith helmet, bashing a snare drum with the Slubbing Billys morris dance team, please do introduce yourself and I will buy you a pint. That's a promise!

Hang about it not up to me to keep a thread alive I have let nothing die Chris. What i can't understand is how after all these years you still can't do a Blue Cliky. The only thing I can come up with is that you think that it is a difficult thing to do. It's not it's Simples, I'm not having a go at you Chris, I know you have many other talents. So just follow these instructions.

1st Go to the Holmfirth Festival of Folk Website then turn it's full web address Blue by clicking and still holding down the Right Mouse Button drag over it.
2nd then press Ctrl and C keys together. This copy's the address.
DO NOT PRESS THE DELEAT KEY or you will replace what you have copied with what you have deleated.
3rd Open up the Mudcat and the thread you want to put you blue clicky.
4th Type in what you want to say when you get to the place in your Reply to Thread Click on the Blue Make a link ("blue clicky") which at the bottom right below the Repl to Thread Box.
5th This will open up a second window click on the Link ULR box and then Press Ctrl and v keys together this will paste they ULR into the box.
6th I you wish type the name of where the link will take you.
7th Then Click Create Link.
8th At the top of this page it says Cut and paste you can do that it's how we started but this time you highlight (Drag over with you Right Mouse Button held down) Then Press Ctrl and c keys down together (copy's highlighted). What you should have is the HTML Code that starts < and ends with >.
9th Paste this into your reply (Ctrl and v keys together)
10 If you want to you can check the preview box then submit message and you get a final preview so you can check it's OK.
11 If it is then Submit Message without the Preview box checked.

The Holmfirth Festival of Folk SIMPLES!

Thanks a lot Tyke me owld buddy I'll ave a go but it looks a bit complicated for a techno-phobe like me. I can only just about send a text the long way round cos I can't cope with predictive text so it's a big ask!

But for your time and patience in giving me all those instructions you have definately earned a pint.

Muppett, me owld mukka, I'll continually insist on you singing your heart out and being the great performer that you are and when I find you flagging or getting hoarse I may have to supply liquid refreshment for medicinal purposes to keep you going.

I just don't want the Wiberly Woberly Workshop to lose thier way back to the Campsite from the Elephant and Castle Cath. We were a bit thin on the Ground last year as the Chricket Club hijacked a part of the crowed that should have been drinking the Elephant Dry. Just making sure that we get a good Crowed in the Elephant this year.

Thanks Chris for renewed connection to website.

So you see Tyke I don't need to learn all that techno-bubble stuff because some kind person will always come along to help me out.

Bye the way, when you look on the website at the festival 'timetable' the first colour shaded timetable relates to Friday's events, the second to Saturday's and the third to Sunday's. Hope that makes everything clear in case anyone was confused.

And ossonflags me old mate you had better be there or I will march through the streets in protest! See you in The Elephant and Castle no doubt Mick lad.

And for those not wise to the workings of this brilliant Yorkshire festival, once time is up in The Elephant and Castle (or wherever)and concerts etc those of us who are not quite ready for bed head for The Old Bridge Hotel for a final civilised and very well behaved singaround/playaround session and then the wibbley wobbley procession of late birds takes a short meander back to the campsite.

Actually now I think about it I think that the late night in The Old Bridge Hotel might have been just on the Saturday night last year and that it shut shop earlier on the Friday.

Can anybody else advise on this please?

Many thanks

Chris

Ermmm... well I was pretty late both Friday and Saturday in the Old Bridge last year but neither would fit the description of civilised and well behaved. At least I didn't. It was fun, mind, and I'll probably be there until early on Sunday morning this weekend, too, having MC'd the concert earlier on the Saturday evening. And I'll try to keep my throat at its mellifluous best (shurely shome mishtake?) for the uke workshop on Sunday morning and the BURP gig in the church at lunchtime. Promise. ;-)

Had a few or the lads visit me at 'ome, already and this passes the time

Already missing "Wibberly Wobberly workshop" too many scars anyway now!

I am of course recovering from "me operation" and hope i am excused this year

Now ossonflags and Owd Chivers should in my view be prime candidates for future bookings (afore its too late!!)

Tyke get in for that op asap! or we will a man short annall here

Hope all goes well Cath !!

Ray has told me that he will not be available, unfortunatle, to substitute for the Guess the weight of the Cake Compertion in a Guess How Many Stitches Compettion as travelling to Holmfith Festival of Folk was not an option.

Well he did not actual say all that he just told me to "beggar off!" Which ruffly translates to the above statement. If I had some young lady volenters to go round to Ray's house to count his stiches he may change his mine and take part if I can Guarantee that they have warm hands. Applicants should see me to audition for counting of Ray's stiches on Friday and Saturday Night in the Elephant and Castle.

You are certainly excused this year Ray if that means taking some time out because of your Op will mean that you return to us in all your full glory next year.

Just take it easy my true gentleman of folk and my hero. God bless ya Sir.

Ossonflags has my vote to fill in the gap until you return.

And that sounds brilliant Tyke. Friday night in The Elephant and Castle looks like it's going to be a reight good do and everyone is welcome to come along and join in the fun and enjoy.
Sounds like The Elephant and Castle and The Nook are the places to head for and final sessions in The Old Bridge Hotel. Smashing!

And next year Ray you will definately lead the Wibberly Wobberly Workshop back to the campsite and hopefully not fall over!

Best regards and best wishes for your full recovery..

The forecast is for sharp showers and high temperatures. That should please publicans as everyone runs for shelter, and street performers as they come back out again. In theory at least.

Local forecast Cath says it should stay mostly dry on Friday with highs of around 20C, 68F once the clouds break and should start to feel warmer and more humid.

On Saturday it says temperatures may reach the highest of the year so far at 22C, 72F which could trigger some heavy showers, possibly thunderstorms. (bring sun tan lotion AND brolly!)

What's the betting that a thunderstorm will lay off till 3.30pm and then decide to dump itself on the morris dance team's procession through the village and up to Victoria park and then bugger off as we get to the park - just like it did 3 years ago!! Grrrr.

On Sunday it says it will start misty, turning sunny before a more heavy and potentially thundery rain. Local flooding is a possibility through the afternoon followed by a clearer, fresher evening. Yikes!

As most festival events and happenings occur indoors it shouldn't be a problem and because the hills and moors in the area are so tinder dry at the moment they will soak up any heavy rainfall like a big thirsty sponge I think any risk of local flooding is very unlikely.

Famous last words? Hope not. Anyway because it is such a mixed bag of a forecast come prepared and prepare to have a really good time - whatever the weather. Enjoy!

Chris

Looking good at the Cricket club Sarah, hope the CD launch goes well

The short stagger from Cricket club to camp site was of course the start of the Wibberley Wobberly workshops, and start of the scars now adorning knees, back and head (no damage there then!)

if the moon shines bright then the path is well lit, if not take a flippin torch and a walking stick and stear clear of the heavy

Ray

Beware traffic wardens, they're targeting the festival. We just had our first parking ticket in twelve years when we popped into the Co-op for some milk. He'd nicked most cars in the row. They normally wait a few minutes for regulars, not this weekend obviously.

Mally, there is plenty of room for camping, the site at sands is huge. Not sure if you can pay the stewards when you get onto the campsite you will probably have to pop into the festival office in The Old Bridge Hotel and get your camping pass there before going on to the campsite.

Quite right Guest Banjiman, top festival indeed!

Everyone seemed to be having a great time and I am always amazed how much this festival attracts people from all over the place.
Once the rain stopped early saturday afternoom (thank goodness) folk seemed to be drawn to the town like a magnet and the whole place was buzzing and heaving with every street/venue/pub/hotel/eatery full to the rafters all day(and all night)long!

It felt like the whole world had turned out to enjoy the sun, the spectacle and fun and just come out to have a good time in Holmfirth.

This has to be good news for all ardent folk followers, the brilliant organisers and volunteers, local business and commerce and residents and visitors alike.

Just very nice to see so many happy faces turning out in their masses to make the most of this special event and spending freely at a time of national austerity. So it can't be all that bad can it?

Majic. Can't wait for the next festival in 2012!

Very well done to all the organising committee, stewards and volunteers. Job well done.

Many thanks

Chris

Had fun but it was very noisy where I went - which is OK I guess. Mostly the Nook and Elephant. But find a nice quiet Postcard early evening which was fun and enjoyed some tunes there.

The Cricket Club was pretty much a bona fide festival concert on saturday, and even though it was free, despite constant comings and goings the audience was enthusiastic and even, occasionally, attentive!
The Pilgrims Way did a fine extended set.
Sorry I didnt make your Elephant session George, but I was on around 10.30 and I couldnt come up with a good reason to be walking the streets of Holmfirth in 6" heels in a monsoon - so I stayed where I was.

No worries mate did you know I lost my Mum in October last year. Thats why I havent been about much I was looking after her for the best part of 2010. She was 91 and after she broke her hip in April she lost all her confidence and never went out of the House and she flatly refused to do her paper round,

No I didn't know that Tyke, very sorry to hear it but I suppose it comes to us all eventually.

It was difficult to find a good laid-back singaround this year.
I think it was because so many pubs were heaving to the rafters, especially when the rain drove everyone inside on Saturday night, and the additional Open Mic at the Elephant and Castle.

Still, everyone seemed to be really enjoying themselves, locals and visitors alike, so it were a reight good do.

I did find a good singing session eventually however upstairs in the Cricket Club on Saturday night once the concerts had finished. It was very late at night till early morning (very near 'dawn chorus' time when I left!)but it was worth staying up in good company and the songs and backing of the exceptional 'Young 'Uns'. Brill!

Chris
