Subject: RE: BS: I miss beardedbruce... From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 23 Apr 11 - 07:31 AM I hadn't noticed his absence yet either - hadn't been long after all, and I miss his parting post. I took it that the one he was objecting to was aimed at the fact that very few indeed of his posts were in the music section. But I found one in which he was offering to sell a five-string banjo, so I don't class him with the people who waltz in here and argue away without showing any interest whatsoever in music. I hope he'll be back anyway. |
Subject: RE: BS: I miss beardedbruce... From: SINSULL Date: 23 Apr 11 - 08:13 AM John, You need to re-read the thread. With the exception of MichaelR's unpleasant and misinformed comment, all above have said they miss sparring (and sometimes losing) with Bruce. Disagreeing with a person's point of view doesn't mean disrespecting him. His enormous cut and pastes drove me nuts sometimes. But Kendall drives me nuts sometimes too. Doesn't change my respect for him. Actually, John, you drive me nuts sometimes and I still respect you. LOL SINS |
Subject: RE: BS: I miss beardedbruce... From: GUEST,Chongo Chimp Date: 23 Apr 11 - 08:20 AM Would you discuss politics with someone while sittin' at the public food court in a big mall and have a microphone mounted on the table so that EVERYONE in the damn mall could hear all your political opinions nice and loud and clear? Would that be a good idea? No, it wouldn't. It would draw a lot of ignorant reactions from all directions. But people do it online here without a moment's thought. And then they get flak from everyone here who don't agree with them...just as if they were sittin' in that public food court, only even worse...and they spend their days fightin' online with all those other people about their differin' political views...and it turns their days into shit. Is this smart behaviour? Would it be smart to keep doin' it day after day? Would it improve your life in any way? Would it change anything for the better? I think Bearded Bruce probably began askin' himself those kinda questions at some point. The answer to all of 'em is "no". So why not have a drink instead and shut up for a change? And vote APP in 2012. - Chongo |

From: GUEST,Guest from Sanity Date: 23 Apr 11 - 09:16 AM Actually, he and I weren't arguing with each other much, if any....but, I don't know why he left, or where he is. I recall him, 'having at it' with the 'left' quite a bit...which put us somewhat on the same side, of several 'discussions'(?)....and I recall being away for Mudcat for a while, and when I popped back in, I found a thread called 'Calling GfS', so I replied.....so BB, if you happened to pop in, to check it out, say 'HI'. Not everyone on here is a bunch of 'ill-spirited' hypocritical, lame brained political, non musical fly-farts!....but I do have to admit, it sure seems like it, a lot of the time!....just like any family! Subject: RE: BS: I miss beardedbruce... From: Bill D Date: 23 Apr 11 - 12:21 PM Beardedbruce is fine... I have seen him 2-3 times in the last couple weeks. He is deep into acquiring & trading fiddles & violas these days, and brought my son a viola to experiment with, and took 2 old violins my wife owns to a shop for evaluation. (seems they are pretty good ones) We 'almost' never talk about Mudcat issues in person, as we argue constantly as VT personalities. (He also works a weird, variable set of shifts, depending on which satellites need monitoring) He is also 'thinking' about retirement, and has acquired an old building for renovation when he retires, and is planning that. He is also a fount of knowledge about how & where to obtain decent, cheap used computer hardware... he is watching for a flat-panel monitor for me. |

Subject: RE: BS: I miss beardedbruce... From: olddude Date: 23 Apr 11 - 02:45 PM I miss him to, it is ok if we don't agree on politics ... politics is just that, a caustic subject that turns friends against each other. We all have the right to agree or disagree. Bruce is a fine person and is missed. I don't care if we disagree on anything. I also hear he is a fine musician. I am sorry that political wrangling drives anyone away from a music site. I wish to God we could not discuss such issues anymore. Nothing good ever comes out of them except pain and feelings hurt |
Subject: RE: BS: I miss beardedbruce... From: ranger1 Date: 23 Apr 11 - 02:48 PM He once wrote a great sonnet about the osprey at the park I used to work at, and gave me permission to print it out and post it on our bulletin board, as long as he received attribution. |
Subject: RE: BS: I miss beardedbruce... From: Charley Noble Date: 23 Apr 11 - 09:11 PM Bill D- Thanks for the update. I missed his last post, and it was probably on one of those political threads that I tend to avoid after one or two posts. I think he might be intrigued by the fact that a wide range of Mudcatters actually miss him, and respect him at some level even if they disagree with him. I have to care a whole lot myself to continue posting on most political threads, but sometimes I do and sometimes it pays off. Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: BS: I miss beardedbruce... From: Carly Date: 25 Apr 11 - 02:44 PM Bruce will probably not be returning here; I think he was angry and hurt to be told that he did not belong here because of his political stands, and that no one on that thread answered to support his right to be a part of mudcat, and by implication, the traditional music world. Bruce enjoys a good argument; believe it or not, he is even willing to be proved wrong on occasion, but he respects his opponents and expects the same in return. I am not surprised that he annoys people; he drives me crazy sometimes too, (and I often disagree with him politically,) but I love him and I am proud that he is my younger brother. Bruce has spent decades supporting the musical traditions that we cherish, and the people who help them to continue, in a myriad of ways large and small, often quietly and with no recognition. He is the most generous human being I know, often to the cost of his own comfort and welfare, towards people he meets in the many parts of his busy life, and you could not have a more loyal friend. It is disgraceful to make anyone unwelcome here because his or her political views do not match yours, naive to believe everyone who is interested in traditional music is on the left politically, and sad that my brother no longer feels welcome here. Carly Gewirz |
Subject: RE: BS: I miss beardedbruce... From: GUEST,999 Date: 25 Apr 11 - 02:58 PM Carly, Please pass on to your brother that he's welcome here as far as I am concerned. He's a good guy. Please let him know I said that. Bruce Murdoch |
Subject: RE: BS: I miss beardedbruce... From: michaelr Date: 25 Apr 11 - 03:30 PM Let's get real here for a minute. A quick survey of bb's posting history shows that he made almost 1,400 posts in 2010. Of these only two or three were related to music. All others were in BS, many of them to threads he started himself. If he indeed "spent decades supporting the musical traditions that we cherish, and the people who help them to continue", he didn't do it here. And the threads he started were generally of a liberal-baiting nature, i.e. he purposely posted material that was sure to be disputed by Mudcat's left-leaning majority. In other words, he was trying to provoke debate (you might say, start fights) knowing full well how his views would be received here. Therefore it is hypocritical in the extreme to pretend he was driven away by hostile members on the left. My above comment was neither misinformed nor unpleasant, but both sarcastic and to the point. Don't take my word for it - go to Old Advanced Forum Search and put "beardedbruce" in the box. |
Subject: RE: BS: I miss beardedbruce... From: Little Hawk Date: 25 Apr 11 - 04:56 PM It's simple. He had an addiction to visiting this place, posting here, and getting in political wrangles with people here. He kicked that habit. That's something many others here haven't managed to do yet. And that's about all there is to it. |
Subject: RE: BS: I miss beardedbruce... From: gnu Date: 25 Apr 11 - 05:09 PM michaelr... some may consider him a catalyst rather than as you describe. |
Subject: RE: BS: I miss beardedbruce... From: olddude Date: 25 Apr 11 - 05:11 PM Well I am sorry if I did not visit the thread and tell him not to get upset ... I have made an effort to stay away from political threads anymore. I wish a good person like Bruce would just forget it ... people here care about him. I do ... I never took any political comment personally, I have gotten upset over some threads but then I just let it go and think others can have an opinion even if I don't agree. I wish he would reconsider. There still is lots of good people and lots of music ... please give him my kind regards. I hope he does come back. He will be missed for sure always Dan |
Subject: RE: BS: I miss beardedbruce... From: olddude Date: 25 Apr 11 - 05:17 PM Carly and please tell him that one person does not speak for everyone on this or any forum. For every insult there are 100 others that think it is wrong ... please do not judge everyone for political disagreements. |

Subject: RE: BS: I miss beardedbruce... From: ranger1 Date: 25 Apr 11 - 07:16 PM michaelr, this will be the last time I respond to you, but yes, you were being mean and nasty, and for no real apparent reason that I can see. It is because of this kind of shit that I took a three month hiatus from Mudcat. Sorry I wasn't here to speak up for you, Bruce. |
Subject: RE: BS: I miss beardedbruce... From: Bill D Date: 25 Apr 11 - 07:31 PM I did not see the thread in question, but Carly is right about his generosity and friendship.... Bruce knew his political views were controversial and often contentious, but I thought he was usually able to hold his own against opponents. It may not help, but he is not the 1st to leave because of frustration in defending controversial views ...of various topics. I don't think Bruce will worry much about it, one way or another. I 'may' bring it up sometime, but only if it seems relevant. Who knows? He may read this & think it over. (*grin*...it seems that one of his more ardent opponents has not been seen here in quite awhile, either. Sure is quiet on some topics) |

Subject: RE: BS: I miss beardedbruce... From: Stilly River Sage Date: 26 Apr 11 - 12:41 AM Oops. I just realized I misspoke earlier - the sing song sonnets I was thinking of are those from Walksabout Verse. I haven't read any of BB's sonnets for a long time, in general it's his politics I dislike, and his propensity for starting threads simply to start arguments. Just to be clear. I'm sure he changes a fine tire, is a talented IT person - and has been the case many times here at Mudcat, a lot of people are different in person. SRS |
Subject: RE: BS: I miss beardedbruce... From: Lonesome EJ Date: 26 Apr 11 - 01:49 AM I just want to say that I only said those nice things about Bruce earlier because I was afraid he might be sulking and a few compliments might get him motivated to come on this thread and speak. Evidently, that's not going to work because somebody didn't get their nap on time, and now they're a little grumpy. Well, say I, the hell with that bearded reactionary with the glint of anarchy in his eye. There's plenty of other places I can get tasty jellied ginger treats, anyway. |
