what's a Backstep

Subject: what's a Backstep From: Lonesome Gillette Date: 15 Sep 99 - 06:26 PM What's a Backstep? Like a Clinch Mountain Backstep. I figure it's a dance step, is it? Does it have any connection to the form of a tune? |

The first step ("back") is as if you were going to walk backwards. After shifting your weight to the backward step (but without touching your back heel to the floor, the second step ("step") is as if you changed your mind after the first backwards step and decided to walk forward. So, "back-forward" would be more descriptive, but "back-step" (sometimes "rock step") is the common usage. (?!) |

For that matter, the various kinds of backstep that I know from Morris dancing are probably also unrelated. I don't think we've figured out where the name Clinch Mountain Backstep comes from yet. In sacred circle dancing it means something like Sorcha described. Sacred Circle dancing derives it steps and terminology from all types of dance. |

It has a musical backstep in it at a certain point, apparently to match the backstep in a dance. It is what fiddlers would call a "crooked" tune. |

Fiddlers seem to like them -- drives guitar back-up crazy. Sorry, I can't think of any examples, except, maybe, "Louie's First Tune" ? |

Where I was dragged up (Birmingham, UK, aka Brum or Brummagem), the backstep was the one you didn't need to holystone 'cos the neighbours couldn't see it! The front step was usually worn away by constant cleaning! If you want a musical excuse for this thread creep, try the old music hall song recorded by some jazz band singers,e.g. Clinton Ford and the Merseysippi (yes, they were from Liverpool) Jazz Band, On Mother Kelly's doorstep ("...and last night on the back step I kissed her best of all...") [prbably not remembered accurately as Steve Parkes will no doubt point out!] RtS |
