Subject: Obit: Frank Finn of Sligo From: MartinRyan Date: 28 Apr 11 - 06:38 PM Just heard today of the untimely death of Frank Finn, organiser of the Sligo Traditional Singing Weekend and a regular Mudcatter in recent years. As far as I know, he collapsed while hill-walking in his beloved county about two weeks ago and failed to recover, despite efforts to revive him. I had originally got to know Frank through Mudcat - and only met him occasionally in what passes for real life - most recently at the Inishowen Ballad Seminar. His Sligo weekend coincided with other committments of mine and I never made it there. More's the pity. A gentleman and a scholar, as we say. Regards |

Subject: RE: Obit: Frank Finn of Sligo From: GUEST,John Moulden Date: 29 Apr 11 - 10:29 AM I couldn't believe it when I heard, nor when I attended the funeral and I haven't yet really taken it in. He was a man who had given a great deal to traditional singing in Sligo, in Ireland as a whole and to Comhaltas and had a great deal more to give. I have been heartened to hear that others will carry on his work with the monthly song gatherings in Ballinacarrow and through the festival he started. May they serve as his memorial. I will miss his work and I will miss him as a friend. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Frank Finn of Sligo From: GUEST,Guest, Katie ONeill Date: 30 Apr 11 - 05:16 PM John I am glad to hear your report that the Sligo singers will go on, despite this devastating loss. Frank was so dedicated to the craft of traditional singing, of researching and learning about the songs, that it is only fitting they continue to keep that tradition going if they can. Frank was a kind and good man who will not be forgotten by those who knew him, even a little, as I did. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Frank Finn of Sligo From: quokka Date: 02 May 11 - 07:14 AM Thanks Martin, my Dad would really appreciate it, he normally goes home to Sligo every year about this time but can't go this year. Only a few weeks ago Frank sent me a song for Dad to learn so I'm sure next time he's in Ballinacarrow he will sing it. Regards Quokka |
Subject: RE: Obit: Frank Finn of Sligo From: Gutcher Date: 02 May 11 - 06:15 PM Absolutely shattered to learn that Frank has passed away. When I met him in Sligo Town in mid April he was full of the joys of spring and after urging me to make the effort to visit the Sligo Festival in the autumn he indicated that he may make a visit to Scotland in the near future. I suggested he speak to Chris Miles and arrange a visit to Fifesing in mid May. When we parted he left with a spring in his step and I still find it hard to believe he died so soon after. Joe. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Frank Finn of Sligo From: GUEST,John Moulden Date: 09 May 11 - 05:17 PM The monthly singing session that Frank founded will be taking place, as usual, at Durkin's of Ballinacarrow, on Wednesday 11th May at 9.30pm. The last one was postponed after his death but I hope that the torch he lit will be carried for a long time. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Frank Finn of Sligo From: GUEST,John Moulden Date: 09 May 11 - 05:40 PM I've just received a text message that says: "To celebrate the life and work of Frank Finn, monthly singing session will recommence in Durkins, Ballinacarrow on Wed 11th May from 9.30. All welcome. Special guest, Jackie Boyce." Jackie Boyce from Comber Co Down, has lived in Co Leitrim for the last couple of years. He and Frank had recently become friends. He is the author of 'Songs of County Down' and a fine singer. |
