Subject: Folk Tribute Bands From: Dave the Gnome Date: 29 Apr 11 - 04:06 PM Listening to the steam wireless on the way home, Tony Blackburn was talking about tribute bands. He mentioned the Bootleg Beatles and, one of my favourite names, Bjorn again - An ABBA tribute for those not in the know. I have my personal favourites - By Jovi being by far the best. I wondered how we would do with Folk Tribute Bands, How about... Steeleye Spoof or Fishermans Fiends Any more for any more? MP |
Subject: RE: Folk Tribute Bands From: GUEST,Tinker in Chicago Date: 29 Apr 11 - 04:49 PM We already have 'em. None of the current members of the Kingston Trio nor of the Limeliters were in their original groups. In fact two of the current Kingstons are former Limeliters! So if you weren't in the original group nor even an early replacement (like Ron Wood in the Rolling Stones) but you sing the original group's repetoire with their arrangements, aren't you in a tribute band? |
Subject: RE: Folk Tribute Bands From: Ruth Archer Date: 29 Apr 11 - 06:41 PM Look out for The Privateers this summer. A celebrity folk tribute band playing classic tracks from the early Steeleye/Fairport days. At Sidmouth Ashley Hutchings is actually playing in with them... |
Subject: RE: Folk Tribute Bands From: Tootler Date: 29 Apr 11 - 06:43 PM It seems to me that the idea of a Folk Tribute band is an oxymoron. The whole essence of a tribute band is to take the songs made famous by the original band and recreate their original arrangements as nearly as you can. In folk music the principle is that you take the songs, whether traditional or recently composed, and interpret them in your own way - You make the song your own. Of course, there are rock/pop bands that do that, but then they are not tribute bands (though some might refer to them as cover bands - often in a way as to imply that performing songs written by someone else is somehow inferior to performing your own original songs; arrant nonsense in my view) I can't see the point in trying to recreate as near exact replicas of an arrangement of a song, though these bands are clearly popular. |
Subject: RE: Folk Tribute Bands From: GUEST,Ralphie Date: 30 Apr 11 - 12:19 AM Well, obviously the Kipper Family (parody of the Coppers). Was lucky enough to be at the gig, many years ago, when they performed together! |
Subject: RE: Folk Tribute Bands From: Tootler Date: 30 Apr 11 - 04:22 PM Doing a parody is not the same thing, though it does represent a tribute to the subject of the parody. |

Subject: RE: Folk Tribute Bands From: GUEST,Guest - Lin Date: 04 Jul 11 - 09:59 PM One of my favourites is Jim Curry who with his wife Anne, perform the songs of John Denver. They are based out of California but travel all over the country performing John's music. Very, very talented! I have seen Jim Curry many times over the years and he sounds so much like John Denver! You can find some of the music he covers of John Denver on Youtube under his name, Jim Curry. |
